And this is why I use an android based ereader. Something as simple as displaying words on a screen shouldn’t be held back by the will of any company.

Funny, i’m also 20 years into linux, but i still love to tinker, and im slowly teaching my child how to use linux. I’m literally installing arch right now as I type this. I love customizing the OS, and ive built a post OS install script to handle all the software and driver stuff.

Very true, I began my own linux journey, almost 20 years ago (fuck I feel old) with Ubuntu, not for any other reason other than it being the only linux distro that had any mass appeal, relatively speaking. But it was a perfect introduction to linux.
Debain-based distros are the way to go for linux newbs, but i’m sure some tech savvy people might like an arch based distro instead. All in all, experimentation, especially when you’re young and not obligated to work or a wife and kids, is great for providing enough time to learn and grow in the linux world.

would WPA3 and pre-shared keys not be enough? If every endpoint is scanning for malware, using host based firewalls, monitoring access logs and activity, it could be possible no?

You know, i think i might learn how to set up ad hoc networks to prepare for this sort of thing. I know its essentially wartime there now, but without internet, its harder to transmit the truth from the eyes of the civilians. Fucking sucks whats happening there. Repressive government, but filled with people who simply want a life free of the conflict, the endless battles, various ethnic groups simply wanting freedom from those who have invaded and partitioned their people.
This cant end well. . .

Sad how a self-centered group of people can make the world a colder place, with impunity.

As if decades of political instability and corruption weren’t hell enough, mr orange man says he’ll really show them!

Not defending the guy, but I mean, just add him to the list of how many million car-brained people exist on this country. He was raised just like us, in cities where public transit was always an inconvenience, and not the way of the future.
You know who else calls for cancelling such projects? Likely your neighbors, who don’t want to fit the bill for the betterment of Canada. The same jackasses who would vote for PP. That’s the larger, more pressing concern in my mind.
So, like most people, he just has a soft spot for the religion he was exposed to most in childhood.
I mean, monotheism wasn’t really a thing (as far as well can tell) prior to 4302 years after humans first began to form civilizations.
For more than 4000 years, we started forming governments, systems of currency, art and culture, all believing that there was no way just 1 being could be to blame for all observable phenomena.
I feel like It could only be the rise of empires and Kings handed down from the heavens that lead to us to being so susceptible to monotheistic beliefs.
Most of social media would be a relative desert if fake outrage could just cease to exist.
Imagine a world with perfect people, for instance, “Oh Dawkins? He’s perfect! A man of no faults I say! I mean, yes this is all we ever can say about him, but hey, it’s perfection we are talking about! He’s on the top 1000 perfect people list, and really doesn’t stand out a bit! What a dream!”

Yes, because I won’t be using their distribution.

fuck the authority, chaining down anything digital because the law is far behind the relative breakneck speed of technological progress.

I agree, and neither do I have all the answers. It is worth exploring, I’m just pessimistic most of the time.

Broad? Is youtube not social? Facebook? Tik-tok? Forums like reddit or lemmy, where people communicate directly, abiding by social norms and etiquette?
The internet and it’s myriads of networks is all information relayed globally via copper, fibre and radio waves. Never did I say that the internet itself is a social network.

55% of any message is conveyed through nonverbal elements (facial expressions, gestures, posture, etc).
Crazy how social media is seen as this thing that we somehow have a beneficial relationship with in such a short period of time. Impossible. The brain hasn’t changed much in the past thousands of years.

excellent take, I never thought of regulation on something digital like an algorithm (concerning social media) to be, I guess, possible when some government officials barely understand what an IP address is.
But that’s the thing, where’s the motivation for this board of experts to exist coming from? There is already plenty of empirical evidence to support the claims of the harms of social media, but in spite of this, change is glacial.
That is why I just generalize and say that social media is the problem, because most people won’t care to hear anything deeper. They are already addicted, and don’t care for a cure.
I know eveything in France is not sunshine and rainbows, but come on, cheap high speed internet, fantastic pedestrian infrastructure, great social welfare program, and now linux being adopted by the government?
France seems pretty cool to me
