about

*-*_*-*_*-*_*-*_*-*_*-*_*-*_*-*_*-*_*-*_*-*_*-*_*-*_*-*_*-*_*-*_*-*_*-*_*-*

Two brutal, obsessive, mantric and hypnotic cuts based on the 60s theory (by astrophysicist MM Woolfson ) of the collision between Pluto and Neptune's Triton satellite, which are sonically captured in a rather raw and ritualistic touch in the sound of En Fer that can sometimes remind you of a cross between the Japanese Les Rallizes Dénudes , the lesser known and classic Marble Sheep or early Acid Mothers Temple. (…)
Side A is for "Devenir une planète..." , a great song led by an insistent and pounding rhythmic base over which a baroque and desert-like Noise Fuzz flies, with a cosmic imprint in the style of Hawkind , Blue Cheer and MC5 and perfectly underlined by pedal effects that almost border on Acid Punk. Strident feedbacks, piercing bass and overdistorted guitar riffs make the minutes pass like a sigh. A muddy, dirty and electrified sensation that is accentuated by a maelstrom of Heavy Psych of the kind that I like, dry, sour and to the jugular. It lasts 11 minutes but it could last until the Universe faded into the ether.
Totally out of sync with the lithic acidity of "Plus qu'une hypothèse" which takes up the 14 minutes of Side B with a bloated, slow and opiate rhythm. Floating Space Rock, gaining in structure and growing with a tireless stony and hypnotic rhythmic base like an existential metronome. Double guitar play, one more introspective and the other razor-sharp and releasing very sharp spiral riffs. The dirty mastering is genius to the point that, as with Gros Rock , it is sometimes difficult to identify which instrument is playing or when the basic but cyclopean analog electronic junk of the synths comes in, but in the end it matters little because En Fer 's music is like a hollow-point bullet. The goal is not perfection, but rather to destroy you inside and out... an unavoidable collision that borders on glory in the strange atonal rhythms at the end of the cut where everything seems improvised, the synths do more damage and the musical notes seem to move with the chaos that reigns among the particles of the microscopic universe.
HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

En Fer bills itself as Montreal’s iron psych warlords collective, and after listening to their tunes, you know they take no prisoners. Formed in 2017, the five local scene veterans play a menacing psych/noise rock that they call Gros Rock that can both pummel and entrance listeners. (…) En Fer’s latest EP, La Collision, provides the gnarly cosmic rock riffs we always crave. The EP also had fascinating thematic elements based on the long-refuted theory of collision between Pluto and Neptune’s satellite Triton, mainly advanced in the early Sixties by astrophysicist M.M. Woolfson.

Canadian band En Fer are out with the mini-album "La Collision", and I suspect that progressive rock may be the best manner in which to categorize the landscapes explored on this production. We get two long form songs on this production, and my impression is that both of them are improvised in nature, or at least performed in a manner that gives them an improvised feel. The first of these is a steady going psychedelic affair that sounds a little bit like Hawkwind but without the cosmic effects in place but with a gentler variety of subtle psychedelic details instead. Steady going in more of a rock to hard rock manner, but with subtle seasoning of the psychedelic order. The second creation is much more of an off kilter affair, with quirky instrument details and unusual sounds and movements that give this one a bit more of a krautrock inspired feel. Rather closer to the likes of Amon Duul II than the likes of Amon Duul I though, but still a bit on the unconventional side of matters. With a little bit of a possible noise rock influx to boot. Both of these excursions are explored and executed with a little bit of a rough and lo-fi feel that is usually described as honest sounding these days. A production to seek out if improvised sounding music with attachments to or similarities with the psychedelic rock tradition and the krautrock tradition are subjects of general interest.
