#178 Flork Reviews: itlookssinister - s/t (2026)

itlookssinister - s/t (2026)
By Flork

Born from a particular tension and resilience of life in Eastern Slovakia, a cultural space slightly removed from Slovakia’s capital-centric spotlight, the Košice quintet itlookssinister released their self-titled debut earlier this month confirming that marginality often fuels underground scenes everywhere on this planet. Hardcore, especially, has served as both an outlet and organising force, since it’s community-driven and usually DIY, as well as emotionally direct. Historically, bands from Košice have leaned towards metallic precision or crust-inflected rawness, creating a sound that is both urgent and introspective. And so, in that kind of lineage, itlookssinister is somewhat connected to, yet distinct in this light, since they are less concerned with orthodoxy and more interested in atmosphere and symbolic weight. And as a young quartet, they already sound expansive, as if trying to project Košice far beyond its regional boundaries.

The album opens with …drak (…dragon), a fast-paced tune that immediately establishes scale and menace. I love this track with the guitars feeling serrated but controlled. The rhythm section locks itself in very well, with a physical, almost claustrophobic force. Following this, stockholm, 1969 compresses anxiety into a tight, explosive burst. This tune had been previously released as a demo a couple of years back, but makes its way onto the full-length album with a bit of polish through clever mastering (or at least it seems that way). Many of the songs are cleverly composed and include lighter guitar-picking as opposed to bar chords. Take cerro torre for example, which channels upward momentum, with riffs climbing like the mountain it references before falling back into distortion. The production balances clarity with abrasion, and the mastering by Oliver Dragun preserves the grit without sacrificing impact.  I like the percussion in this track (and elsewhere on the album), as well as the bass which sits thick in the mix, and the vocals cut through without overpowering the instrumentation. Visually, the album‘s cover by Vlada Rakovska reinforces the band‘s ambition, depicting a dragon clutching what appears to be a globe. It‘s a simple image that suggests both destruction and guardianship, sort of a fitting metaphor for a Košice band aiming outward.

The midsection of the album broadens the emotional palette. tsurugi (Tsurugi – Japanese sword) slices with deliberate precision and stretches the band‘s structure into a more narrative and layered component. The vocals are full of raw emotion here, desperate and scared (ja to nevidím....). enfants (children) also carries a brittle vulnerability beneath its aggression, despite its light intro, hinting at fractured innocence. By this point, you should be aware that itlookssinister has mastered the art of contrast with layers of depthness, despite the lighter instrumentation.

The heaviest conceptual weight arrives with spalovač mrtvol (The Cremator), which is a suffocating and methodical track that builds dread before collapsing into catharsis. Personally, this track is my favourite as it contains all of the above-mentioned elements I described earlier. And finally, večerníček... (bedtime story / children’s TV tale) closes the album, unfolding over more than five minutes (the longest track on the album), beginning almost restrained before expanding into a final, engulfing surge. Pure brilliance if you ask me.

And the Florkman's prognosis? This is a cool album full of energy and emotion. Beyond that simplicity lies its real strength: authenticity. For a debut, itlookssinister sounds confident without being complacent, and maintains its ambitions without losing its hardcore nexus. If this is the foundation, the future of this Košice quartet looks not only promising, but fiercely alive.

#283 Remdik / Oi! HC / Franco, Rusty, Pelé 10, Tadko / 5.10.2025

1. Čo práve robíš a čo ťa najviac zaujíma práve v týchto dňoch ?

Popri odpovedaní na tieto otázky počúvam The New York Hounds, The Replacements, Syndrome81, Youth Of Today.

S Martinom a Peťom som hral v krátko fungujúcej kapele GETO.

Pelé 10: Rasťo a.k.a Rusty - basa, Tadeáš a.k.a. Tadko - gitara, Martin- a.k.a. Franco - spev, ja Peter a.k.a.

On o tom asi povie viac.

Tadko: Prvú kazetku sme natočili ešte s bráchom za veľmi rýchly čas a druhú už s kamošom Maťom ešte rýchlejšie pretože trpíme pretlakom nápadov a workoholizmom. Na label 161 Strikes rec. narazil náš manager Mieszko cez nejakého bývalého kriminálnika z Balkánu.

Žiadne nasilu zbastlené a zašumené spevy a podobne. Za zvuk ďakujeme Brianovi ktorý nám spravil obe nahrávky a ja som veľmi spokojný.

Pelé 10: Chceli sme to spraviť tak aby každá náhravka bola dostatočne čitateľná a zároveň surová. Myslím si, že sa to podarilo.

Tadko: Chceli sme konečne  aby to znelo počúvateľne a zároveň old skuuul.

My sa snažíme mixovať Oi! a Hardcore. Mne to príde hrozne sympatické spojenie a hrozne ma to baví. Melodické pasáže, breakdowny, zrozumiteľné texty a energia. U nás tomu ľudia moc nerozumejú, čo už, ich chyba ... Hahaha ... O to viac si vážime ľudí ktorí to ocenia.

Hhaha ...

Franco: Je to veľmi dobré zapamätateľné idealistické zobrazenie.

Rusty: Prejdi sa ulicami Žiliny a možno budeš mať šťastie ...

Pelé 10: Ak niekoho uvidíš na koni v uliciach ZA bude to skôr policajt počas športového podujatia než skinhead z obalu platne.

Ľudia to hrotia z jednej strany, iní zas z druhej. Použite zdravý rozum! Nebuď násilný debil a zároveň sa nenechaj fackovať.

Tadko: Aké násilie, načo násilie? Nech vládne láska a mier.

Scéna v New Yorku bola do veľkej miery spojená s drsným prostredím a pouličným životom. Preto príslušnosť k nejakej crew bola pochopiteľná, pretože to im dávalo možnosť prežitia a súdržnosti.

To formovalo ich prístup – išlo skôr o prežitie a úprimnosť k životu v meste než o nejakú politickú ideológiu.

13. Kde môžu fans vidieť Remdik naživo a čo plánuje kapela do budúcnosti?

POSTOi! a celú scénu!

Tadko: Nemáme a nikdy mať nebudeme, lebo sme namyslení straight edge skinheadi s ktorými sa nikto necíti fajn!

15. Ktorý album, artwork a videoklip vás v poslednej dobe zaujal najviac ?

Martin: Akurát počúvam nový album Planet On A ChainRitual Routine, ktorý vyšiel pred pár dňami a je výborný.

Hahaha ...

Pelé 10: Album: Haywire Artwork: všetky obaly od Baroness Video: Haywire - Clocktower Place

Tadko: Album - Restraining Order / Future Fortune, Artwork- Lvmen / Amen, Klip- Clobber / Be someone.

16. Hudobný album, kniha, film, seriál, počítačová hra, tetovacie štúdio ktoré odporúčaš a prečo.

Franco
Album: Warzone: Don't Forget The Struggle Don't Forget The Streets
Kniha: Keďže mám dvoch malých synov tak najaktuálnejšia a výborná kniha je od autorov: Daniel J. Siegel a Tina Payne Bryson: Rozvíjajte naplno mozog svojho dieťaťa, odporúčam všetkým rodičom.
Film: Kafarnaum

Hahaha ...

Pelé 10: Album: The Brass - Our Own Path je skvelý od začiatku až do konca! Je to jeden z mála albumov, kde nepreskakujem žiadnu skladbu.
Kniha: From Punk To Monk - a memoir Ray Raghunath Cappo
Seriál: naposledy som videl sériu Maid (2021)… dobré to bolo.

Tadko: Knihu- Yongey Mingyur Rinpočhe / Umíráme každý den a k tomu album Wild God od Nick Cave

1. What are you up to these days, and what interests you the most right now?

Franco: Basically nothing special. These days I’m mostly busy working in the yard, fighting tons of paving stones — but at least I get a free workout out of it. I’m also sorting out the bureaucracy around getting my house approved for use, and in between all that, I try to find some time for my family.

Rusty: Just the usual boring stuff. Our living room chandelier broke, so I have to sort out a new one.

Pelé 10: Hey there, I’m just coming back home by train from Košice and looking forward to going for a run when I get back. While answering these questions, I’m listening to The New York Hounds, The Replacements, Syndrome81, and Youth Of Today.

Tadko: I just finished listening to the new Agnostic Front single — not bad at all for old dogs! The weather’s cooled down, so I’m getting back into the craft of cold exposure training.

2. Introduce the band Remdik to the readers — what does the name mean, who are the members, how did you get together, and where did you play before?

Franco: I joined the band in October 2023, so the guys already had their first album out. Rasťo contacted me saying they needed a singer. I’ve known him since we were about 16 — we’ve been through a lot of gigs together as music fans. Before this, we had a band called GETO where we played together with Peťo.

Rusty: I’ve known Tado since kindergarten and Peťo since first grade. After years without much contact, it turned out we all liked the same music, and I’ve probably seen the most concerts with Martin. It all just came together nicely. I played in a short-lived band called GETO with Martin and Peťo.

Pelé 10: Rasťo aka Rusty – bass, Tadeáš aka Tadko – guitar, Martin aka Franco – vocals, and me, Peter aka Pelé 10” – drums. I’ll just add that I used to play bass in Cameleon, and now I’m behind the drums.

Tadko: Remdik is a crew devoted to hardcore — and we know how to have fun even without alcohol. We all went to kindergarten together, and thanks to those good memories from childhood, we decided to form a positive band that will outlive us.

3. The band has two releases out, both on cassette via 161 Strikes Records. How did the material for these recordings come together, and how did the collaboration with the label happen?

Franco: The guys will definitely comment more on this — it’s their work and their credit.

Rusty: The main musical brains of the band are Tado and Peťo. They always put together the core structure, and then we shape it together during rehearsals. Our cooperation with 161 Strikes Records is thanks to our manager — he can tell you more about that.

Pelé 10: Both recordings came together quite quickly. We always have plenty of ideas — the main thing is finding the time to work them out in the rehearsal room. Since none of us can read music, it’s a very straightforward process — we just link riffs together, sometimes keep little mistakes that end up fitting perfectly, and the most important thing is that we feel good about the result, both when playing and listening. Tadko can tell you more about working with 161 Strikes Records.

Tadko: We recorded the first tape with my brother really fast, and the second one with our friend Maťo even faster, because we suffer from an overload of ideas and chronic workaholism. Our manager Mieszko came across 161 Strikes Records through some ex-con from the Balkans.

4. Did you have a clear idea about the sound and atmosphere of the recordings? How happy are you with the result?

Franco: Since we all like similar music, our shared idea of how it should sound is pretty much the same. That makes the creative process easier — no need for compromises.

Rusty: We mainly wanted a proper, mature recording we wouldn’t be ashamed of — none of that forced, half-baked, noisy vocal mess. Big thanks to Brian, who handled both recordings — I’m really happy with the sound.

Pelé 10: We wanted each recording to be clear enough but still raw. I think we nailed it.

Tadko: We finally wanted it to sound listenable but still old-school. I think we managed that — thanks to our personal sound wizard, B.B.

5. Remdik identifies with the Oi! scene. How widespread is this scene today, and how can someone today relate to a genre that originated in the late ’70s among English working-class youth?

Franco: At the moment, I don’t feel like Oi! or hardcore attract many new young people. Maybe that’s because the topics these genres deal with aren’t “IN” these days — hopefully that’ll change.

Rusty: It’s not very widespread. The oldest wave of Oi! bands didn’t really affect me. We’re trying to mix Oi! and hardcore — we didn’t invent anything new. We just like the bands taking this direction, especially in the US but also elsewhere. I find that mix very sympathetic — melodic parts, breakdowns, clear lyrics, and energy. People here don’t really get it, but that’s their problem… hahaha. That’s why we value even more those who do appreciate it.

Tadko: As a crew, we mainly identify with the skinhead hardcore scene that originally came from the US. The Oi! element in our sound comes from my brother, since he’s a real skinhead and set the direction for Remdik from the start — we’re just a lighter version. Truth is, I’ve been listening to Oi! since elementary school, and we built the band as a return to our roots. The guys gave me and my brother a free hand in this, and we made good use of it. I can see a revival of Oi!-hardcore-punk in the West, which could be an inspiration for the Slovak and Czech scenes too. Hopefully, they’ll eventually respond and rediscover the beauty of this slap-in-the-face kind of subgenre.

6. After years of gatekeeping and slow decay, some underground scenes are finally starting to welcome young blood again. Do the old-timers finally understand that without them their legacy will die – even if the young ones don’t bring anything new?

Franco: You have to give space to young people in everything, but especially in culture. Right now, we’re seeing stagnation in the scene we move in. Accepting young people is essential for the subculture’s survival.

Rusty: It always makes me happy to see kids fired up about the scene — even more if they stick around. Nobody’s gonna kick you out from in front of the stage, just show up!

Pelé 10: For me, it’s a positive sign to see a new generation showing up at gigs. I wish them to make their own music and to stay true to themselves.

7. What are the traditional features of the Oi! genre, and which styles are closest to it? At what point do you realize you’re no longer Oi! but maybe 77 punk instead?

Martin: Oi! is more straightforward, often anthemic punk — if you take that away and speed up the rhythm, you probably end up with 77 punk.

Rusty: Hard to say. If I were to lighten it up a bit — I think sometimes the border is just about how the band members dress.

Tadko: A wise bald man once said that Oi! is just more aggressive, more street-level punk without the mohawk. Nothing more, nothing less.

8. How far has Remdik’s music reached so far? And is it even possible, within the genre, to make it abroad while singing in Slovak?

Franco: When people from Canada or California order our tapes, or when folks from Belgium or France write to invite us to play — it’s just unbelievable how far our music has gone.

Rusty: If I’m not mistaken — USA and Canada. Sometimes I have to wrap my head around the fact that this scene has no borders, and there are maniacs out there listening to some band from Slovakia. Real diehards! In other genres, that would be almost unthinkable. I don’t think the language is a problem. We try to post English translations of the lyrics, so whoever’s interested can get the message. I’d love to see someone singing along phonetically though… hahaha!

Pelé 10: I’m a fan of bands that sing in their own language. Either it works when you hear it — or it doesn’t. During our time as a band, we’ve already been invited to play outside of Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Trips like that aren’t easy to arrange because of work, but it looks like the doors are open…

Tadko: When tape orders started coming in from the US, I was just staring in disbelief.

9. The artwork for both Remdik releases gives me “skinhead knights” vibes. Is that an idealized image, or could I actually meet a skinhead with a mace in Žilina — or end up under the hooves of his noble stallion?

Franco: It’s a very memorable idealized image.

Rusty: Take a walk through the streets of Žilina — you might get lucky…

Pelé 10: If you see someone on horseback in the streets of Žilina, it’s more likely to be a cop during a sports event than a skinhead from our album cover.

Tadko: Everything about our crew is based on true stories.

10. To what extent is violence acceptable within the Oi! subculture? Is it more like “karate in the mosh pit,” or can someone actually get hurt even outside of shows?

Franco: My view is that you shouldn’t be an aggressor — but on the other hand, aggressors shouldn’t be tolerated either. If you witness physical or verbal violence, you should speak up or step in. Zero tolerance for oppression.

Rusty: Violence for the sake of violence is stupidity. Some people overdo it one way, others the opposite. Just use common sense! Don’t be a violent idiot — but don’t let yourself be slapped around either.

Tadko: What violence? Why violence? Let love and peace rule.

11. In the 1970s, young people were frustrated for various socio-economic reasons, which later evolved into more controversial directions and eventually led to the outright hijacking of the skinhead subculture by Nazis. Where does today’s frustration of the young blood in this subculture come from, and is it now more resilient to extremism and the ever-present idiocy than it was in the 1980s?

Franco: Thanks to anti-racist and anti-fascist attitudes, and SHARP skinheads, the skinhead scene today is better defined than it used to be, when people got their information mainly on a local level. On the other hand, there are lots of disinformation websites and conspiracy theories online spreading their propaganda. But in my opinion, anyone genuinely interested in skinhead culture can easily find out what they need to know — that being a skinhead doesn’t mean being a Nazi. Most people already understand that, though of course, there are still a few confused exceptions.

Rusty: Hard to say. Our way is to speak openly about our values — that’s the path we’ve chosen. We’ve also heard opinions that people don’t like when bands talk too much between songs. I don’t know. We don’t have a patent on the truth. But if what we say helps someone realize they’re not alone and not fall under the influence of some local idiots, that’s great. Maybe back in the early days, when it all started forming, bands didn’t talk about these things — and that’s why both sides of the spectrum could claim the same band.

Pelé 10: In the ’70s, economic uncertainty and social tension were the breeding ground for the hijacking of the skinhead identity. Whether the young generation today is more resilient to extremism is highly individual — it depends on whether you let frustration consume you or keep building inner strength and find a way to survive.

Tadko: I think skinhead culture has gone through a strong cleansing process in recent years, and it’s much clearer now — even to society — that a skinhead isn’t a bonehead. The skins I know have a solid sense of what they stand for, and overall, judging by newer skinhead bands, it’s clear that strict anti-fascism and anti-racism, as well as a lifestyle with solid values, are deeply rooted in this subculture.

12. I’ve read somewhere that the NYHC/Oi! scene always had a more “right-leaning” attitude than other hardcore scenes, like those on the US West Coast or elsewhere. Was this “right-wing” character of NYHC due to their local pride — attachment to their neighborhoods — or something else? And how does this relate to the Agnostic Front song Public Assistance, written by Peter Steele (RIP), who worked with AF on Cause of Alarm (1986)? Why wasn’t this topic taboo in the NYHC community, while it was everywhere else?

Franco: I wouldn’t see politics behind it, but rather an attitude shaped by the rough urban environment they grew up in. The New York scene was strongly connected to street life. Belonging to a certain crew made sense — it gave people survival and solidarity. The song was just a consequence of frustration. It wasn’t aimed at condemning the poor, but rather criticizing those who, in their eyes, abused the system and didn’t even try to work. So for them, it wasn’t about politics — it was about daily reality.

Rusty: I haven’t really come across that idea. I think these days people just like to slap labels on everything. It’s important to say that the term “more right-leaning” is very broad. And whatever people might imagine when they hear “right-wing” or “far-right,” that’s definitely not what we’re talking about! I hope that’s clear to everyone. As for that song — it’s fine to criticize social parasitism if someone abuses the system and drags everyone around down with them. That needs to be said and underlined — not caring or trying in life is not cool. I don’t know where the idea came from that being a drugged-out bum is something to admire. That’s just destructive — for your family and friends. At least it’s a controversial topic, and that’s what hardcore has always been about.

Pelé 10: If you listen to interviews with people from the NYHC scene, they often mention local pride but also the fact that they grew up in harsh conditions. That shaped their approach — it was more about survival and honesty about city life than about any political ideology.

13. Where can fans see Remdik live, and what are your future plans?

Franco: We’ve still got a few more shows planned in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. We’re currently working on a new album and doing everything to release it successfully next year.

Rusty: Concerts are planned — as usual in CZ/SK — and we post them as they come. We’re rehearsing new songs, so you can look forward to new music soon.

Tadko: You can find us on some workout playgrounds around town, in factories, at the physio clinic, in the Roma settlement, or in our boxing gym. The plan is clear — to play a skinhead show in Boston!

14. Do you have any friendly bands at home or abroad that you feel good with, either on stage or off?

Martin: Rasťo already mentioned them.

Rusty: Definitely go support bands like Rozruch, 29 August, Crossczech, GxUxTxS, TVOi! POSTOi!, and the whole scene!

Tadko: We don’t have any and never will, because we’re arrogant straight edge skinheads nobody feels good around!

15. Which album, artwork, or music video impressed you the most recently?

Martin: I’m currently listening to Ritual Routine by Planet On A Chain — it came out just a few days ago, and it’s great.

Rusty: Not sure if it fits the question, but Peťo got me hooked on live sets from HAYWIRE. If gigs here looked like that, the world would be a better place... Hahaha.

Pelé 10:
Album: The BrassOur Own Path — amazing from start to finish, one of the few albums where I skip no track.
Artwork: everything by Baroness.
Video: HaywireClocktower Place.

Tadko:
Album – Restraining Order / Future Fortune,
Artwork – Lvmen / Amen,
Video – Clobber / Be Someone.

16. A music album, book, movie, series, video game, or tattoo studio you’d recommend — and why.

Franco:
Album: WarzoneDon’t Forget The Struggle Don’t Forget The Streets
Book: Since I have two small sons, the most relevant and excellent book is The Whole-Brain Child by Daniel J. Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson — I recommend it to all parents.
Film: Capernaum
Series: Mindhunter
Games: If I had time for a console, I’d play Ghost of Tsushima or Yotei, but my classics are Call of Duty and Wolfenstein.
Tattoo: All my tattoos are by Peter Laskovič (Štoty), currently in Prague at Root Down Tattoo and Piercing — highly recommended if you want quality ink.

Rusty: I’m looking forward to GTA VI, though I’ll be waiting a long time since I play on PC... Hahaha.

Pelé 10:
Album: The BrassOur Own Path, brilliant from start to finish.
Book: From Punk to Monk – A Memoir by Ray Raghunath Cappo.
Series: Maid (2021) — really good.

Tadko:
Book: Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche – We Die Every Day
Album: Nick CaveWild God

17. Is there someone from the Slovak scene (active or not) you’d like to read an interview with on Jablká ďaleko od stromu?

Franco: Martin Slovak (drummer from G.U.T.S) — he’s definitely someone who has something to say.

Rusty: Interview as many young bands as possible — let the scene hear about them! For example, Klika Vod Hajzlu.

18. Motto / favorite quote or final message.

Franco: Let’s care about what’s happening around us and try to contribute positively to our lives and to society.

Rusty: Thanks for the interview and for doing this!

Pelé 10: Live your life!

Tadko: People, let’s do something — because so far, we haven’t done anything!

#275 Svarta Havet / Post Black Metal / Joakim / 8.7.2025

1. Who are you, what do you do, and what has been capturing your interest the most these days?

I'm Joakim I play guitar in Svarta Havet and mostly the genocide in Gaza as well as the increased militarisation of my own country and the war in our own region has been on my mind. As far as music goes the new Chat Pile record is pretty awesome and as far as life in general I'm trying to remember to enjoy the good moments and build community with my friends.

2. Could you introduce Svarta Havet to our readers? Where are you based and who’s in the band?

We are a bleak hardcore band with some metal influences that tries to keep ecology and politics at the forefront of our message. We all live in Turku and have been active in the local punk & hardcore scene for a long time. Our current line-up is Lotta on vocals, Anders on baśs, me (Joakim) on guitar and Jara on drums.

3. When and how did you guys get together — and how did you manage to convince Jara, formerly of Reverend Bizarre, to play at more than 20 BPM? Isn't Jara afraid of being charged with speeding by the traditional doom police?

We started playing in 2018 because we knew each other from before and all wanted to try something new. Lotta had only done clean singing before but was keen to start screaming because she loves hardcore music. When our previous drummer Markus had to quit because of health reasons Jara was a natural fit as we already knew each other from the local scene. Convincing her to play fast wasn't a problem as she had already done some pretty fast d-beat with straight edge band Raivoraittius but she really brought some doom vibes to the new record and the new songs for sure.

4. Your latest album Månen ska lysa din väg (The moon shall light your path) is entirely in Swedish. Do you find it more natural to express your thoughts in Swedish rather than Finnish or English or is there any special reason for that? Is it common for Finnish people to speak and sing in Swedish — or is choosing it for your lyrics a more personal or artistic decision?

Three of us speak Swedish as out native language including Lotta who does most of the lyrics so it was quite a natural choice. There are a lot of Swedish speaking Finns especially along the western coast of Finland. Lotta's lyrics are quite poetic so I think she wanted to use her native language to express herself.

5. The lyrics and visuals of the new album strongly evoke the woods, nature, and a sense of escape from the city. Do you live in the city, looking for an escape into nature, or have you already found peace in the Finnish countryside?

Most of us are trapped in the cityscape but half of the band (including Lotta) escapes out into the archipelago for the summer months. Not seeing or hearing a car or visiting a supermarket for a couple of months means it is quite a culture shock to be back in the consumer carnival of the city. So maybe that is reflected in some of the themes.

6. Finland is known as the land of a thousand lakes — do you find comfort in being close to water and taking saunas, or do you feel more at home in the forests? Or a bit of both?

Most of us grew up close to the sea so it definitely has a big role as inspiration and comfort. Personally I never feel as calm as when I'm out on the sea cliffs or in a boat heading towards some peaceful island. But wandering the forest is also a big part of what inspires us. Saunas are a community thing here, nothing builds closeness as taking a sauna together.

7. Speaking of saunas — are you familiar with the Finnish horror film Sauna? I really enjoyed its haunting mood and atmosphere, and I feel like it shares a similar vibe with Månen ska lysa din väg. What did you think of the film, and are there any Finnish movies you’d personally recommend?

Unfortunately I haven't seen that movie but now that I looked it up I definitely have to give it a watch. I love the Kaurismäki films as much as everyone else but that is hardly surprising. Kauas pilvet karkaavat being a personal favorite. I would also recommend Hytti no. 6, based on the novel by Rosa Liksom.

8. Svarta Havet is often labeled as a post-black metal band, which usually implies a wide range of extreme music influences orbiting around a black metal core. Would you agree with this description, and could you share some of your key influences?

I would agree we have a very wide range of influences. Everything from Oathbreaker, that you can hear pretty clearly, to Totalt Jävla Mörker and even some noise rock influences. I think we share a lot of sensibilities with Liturgy, Agriculture and Ashenspire as well as Dawn Ray’d.

                                                         photo: Jan Trygg

9. Some bands with broader influences find it hard to fit neatly into a sub-genre or scene. What’s your experience with this — do you feel like you belong somewhere, and what kind of sub-culture or scene feels most like home to you?

I think because of our background and politics we feel most at home in the punk and hardcore scene even if our music has gone more into metal territory. I would like to think that we are a pretty active part of our local scene and try to do what we can to keep it going strong.

10. You've released the album on the US label Prosthetic Records — how did that collaboration come about? Did you consider other labels as well, perhaps even the legendary Svart Records? Do you see any particular benefits in releasing your music through a US label — such as reaching a North American audience or even the possibility of touring there in the future?

I don't think having a specifically North American label has any real benefits with the way music is distributed nowadays, beyond maybe reaching that audience a bit better. It was more about finding a partner that shared our politics and aesthetics and since Prosthetic had released some of our favorite records (Vile Creature & Dawn Ray’d) it was a pretty natural fit. They also let us have complete creative freedom with everything so we had a really good feeling about signing with them.

11. What has the feedback on Månen ska lysa din väg been like so far, and how far do you plan to take it with the upcoming shows?

People seem to like it and the reviews have generally been positive so that is nice. But mostly we live for the live shows so we hope this will translate into more shows and tours. We're already booking a European tour for October and hope some festivals will want to book us as well next year after we've finished recording the next record.

12. What’s your attitude towards vices—do you keep them under control? Any interesting stories from a life of a Finlandia post black metal band you’d like to share?

I think we are pretty ok at keeping the vices to an acceptable level of fun and still handling our shit. Maybe it helps having one sober member at all times, but yeah playing in Olecko outside on a beach in the freezing wind was only possible due to the excellent quality of the local vodka and amazing homemade wine. Truly a great night even if I broke my glasses and it felt like my fingers would freeze off. Memorable hospitality overall in Poland is our experience.

13. Have you ever played in Slovakia, or are you familiar with any Slovak (or Czech) bands? What would make you consider coming here for a show?

We have yet to come to Slovakia, would absolutely love to. Any local promoters hit us up! We are coming to your neighborhood in October (Poland & Czech) so hopefully we can stop somewhere in Slovakia too.
Unfortunately we are pretty much completely out of the loop when it comes to Slovak bands, you gotta give us some tips on what to check out.

14. Be honest — is the song Avgrunden secretly a tribute to the legendary Slovak d-beat band Avgrund who did the infamous 7" split with Japan’s Disprove in ‘97?

Wow! This was a blast! Any band that has a song called “Döda dom rika” (kill the rich) deserves a tribute. So maybe we subconsciously made one.

15. Which album, album cover, book and music video have impressed you the most recently?

I really enjoyed reading Ottessa Moshfegh’s My year of rest and relaxation and am looking forward to the new Sunniva record. Great people, great music.

                                                         photo: Aleks Talve

16. Is there someone on the scene with whom you’d like to read an interview on Jablká ďaleko od stromu?

Sunniva as mentioned before and would love to hear from Grave Hex as well.

17. What’s one last piece of advice you’d like to leave for our readers?

Even in the darkest times the moon will light your way. Stay organized, stay hopeful.

1. Kto si, čo robíš a čo ťa v poslednej dobe najviac zamestnáva?

Najviac mi momentálne leží v hlave genocída v Gaze a zvyšujúca sa militarizácia mojej vlastnej krajiny a vojna v našom regióne.

2. Môžeš našim čitateľom predstaviť Svarta Havet? Odkiaľ ste a kto tvorí kapelu?

Všetci žijeme v Turku a dlhodobo sme aktívni v miestnej punk/hardcore scéne. Aktuálne zloženie je: Lotta (spev), Anders (basgitara), ja (Joakim – gitara) a Jara (bicie).

                                                         photo: Valtteri Rannelma

5. Texty a vizuál nového albumu evokujú lesy, prírodu a útek z mesta.

Odporúčam aj Hytti no. 6, podľa knihy Rosy Liksom.

A aké máte plány do budúcna?

13. Hrali ste niekedy na Slovensku? Poznáte nejaké slovenské (alebo české) kapely? Čo by vás sem prilákalo?

14. Úprimne – je vaša skladba Avgrunden tajnou poctou legende slovenského d-beatu Avgrund, ktorí mali v ’97 splitko s japonskými Disprove?

Wow! To je paráda! Každá kapela, ktorá má song Döda dom rika (zabite bohatých), si zaslúži poctu – možno sme to podvedome spravili.

15. Ktorý album, obal, knihu a videoklip ťa naposledy najviac oslovil?

Veľmi sa mi páčila kniha My Year of Rest and Relaxation od Ottessy Moshfegh a teším sa na nový album Sunniva – skvelí ľudia, skvelá hudba.

17. Aký posledný odkaz by si chcel zanechať našim čitateľom?

Aj v tých najtemnejších časoch ti mesiac ukáže cestu. Organizujte sa, nestrácajte nádej.

#154 Flork Reviews: My o Vlkoch - Slovo je Zbraň (2025)

My o Vlkoch - Slovo je Zbraň (2025)
By Flork

Punk’s not dead! My o Vlkoch, a politically-charged punk/hardcore trio from Košice, Slovakia, return after a bit of a hiatus from the studio with their second, full-length album Slovo je zbraň (The Word Is the Weapon), reminding us of how much can be said and screamed in under 20 minutes. Since their DIY demo in 2014, the band has matured without dulling their edge (they have also released singles and an EP since that time). Yet this release, although short in duration, feels densely-packed with meaning, fury, and determined intent. With eleven tracks clocking in at just under two minutes each, Slovo je Zbraň is a record incapable of wasting a second of your attention.

The album opens with Na počiatku bolo slovo (In the Beginning, There Was the Word), a track that sets the tone both sonically and thematically. This track is explosive (like literally), urgent, and layered with intent. I love how it begins with the light piano and monologue of the female voice before going all-out ballistic. The production here, as well as throughout the album, which was handled by guitarist Mimuško (Slovo je Zbraň is, after all, a DIY effort), is raw, yet remarkably tight. There's a clarity to the chaos, where each riff and shouted lyric lands with full force. Aj tisíckrát opakovaná lož je stále lož (Even a Lie Repeated a Thousand Times is Still a Lie) barrels through with relentless energy and a sense of conviction that defines the record’s ethos. Again, I love the spoken word at the end of this track as it emphasizes the hypocrisy of our society, especially from the P.I.C.—the people in charge.

When you listen on, the band’s tight three-piece dynamic—Ixuško on bass and vocals, Mimuško on guitar and vocals, Renuško on drums and backing vocals—remains at the core, but they aren’t afraid to explore or pay homage. Prázdniny u strýčka (Vacation at my Uncle’s) is a striking reinterpretation of a track which was originally recorded by the Czech band Duben v Pěsti, yet reimagined here with My o Vlkoch’s signature speed and bite. This is a cool song and well-written, with the instrumentation on this track being level-up and showcasing the group‘s ease with collaboration and their embrace of diversity. You’ll hear other examples of this in later tracks, especially in My (We). Other standouts include Domov dôchodcov (Retirement Home) with its haunting edge, channeling emotional fatigue rather than outright aggression—a brief yet powerful shift in tone. I also enjoyed listening to Love Song, which is ironically titled, since it is anything but sentimental with bitter sarcasm (My všetci sa máme skvelé—we’re all doing well). Its snarled delivery and breakneck pace give it a sarcastic edge, mocking the idea of conventional dating and affection, yet precisely sums up „love“ in 2025 (I can testify to this—my Tinder profile gets swiped left more than Terms and Conditions). Značky a logá (Brands and Logos) hits hard with its critique of consumerism, while Vždy v záujme strany (Always in the Interest of the Party) blends satire and rage into one of the album’s most rousing tunes.

The closing track My (We) is perhaps the emotional and political high point. Featuring guest vocalists Kedrovka from the now-defunct Bratislava band Naive Fighters, Didi from Nonconformist (Legendary Slovak HC/punk group), as well as Dan from the Moravian quintet Hledání (another group which is no longer active), it becomes a collective declaration of solidarity. Most notably is that the chorus is assembled from lines contributed by each guest vocalist, with each singing their own part, thus turning the song into a patchwork of resistance voices. It’s an appropriate finale, both musically and ideologically, since it underscores the album’s sense of community, defiance, and of course collaboration. The collective vocals and gang shouts (although in no way are they intimidating), as well as the amazing guitars create an anthemic wall of sound. I would describe it as a closing rally cry, light in essence, that lingers with you long after the record ends.

Visually, I also have to add that Slovo je zbraň is elevated by striking cover art and design by Martina from Gamine Artwork. I’m unsure whether she designed the covers of their previous albums/singles, in any case, she captures the gritty, unvarnished energy of the band’s sound by depicting a slightly-turned head with a cleverly designed sound bubble containing key words such as Mor! (Plague) Špiny! (Dirt), Švaby! (cockroaches) and To oni! (It’s them who did it!). It’s also worth noting that the vinyl edition includes a special bonus: their first full-length, self-titled album from 2017 appears on Side B. This is a thoughtful addition that provides context to their evolution—from raw beginnings to a more refined yet still ferocious sound.

And the Florkman’s prognosis? With sharp production and uncompromising messages, as well as a strong sense of identity, the band delivers a compact, yet unforgettable statement. This isn’t just music to mosh to, but could be best described as music to listen to, feel, and most of all act on. My o Vlkoch easily prove that punk is not dead. In fact, it’s alive and kicking.

My o Vlkoch - Slovo je Zbraň (2025)
By Flork

Prázdniny u strýčka je nápaditá prerábka pôvodnej skladby českej kapely Duben v Pěsti, no v podaní My o Vlkoch je o dosť rýchlejšia a ostrejšia. Ďalšie príklady nájdete v neskorších skladbách, najmä v My (My sme). Značky a logá útočí ostrou kritikou konzumu, zatiaľ čo Vždy v záujme strany kombinuje satiru a zlosť v jednej z najchytľavejších piesní albumu.

Záverečná skladba My je pravdepodobne emocionálnym a politickým vrcholom albumu. S hosťujúcimi vokalistami Kedrovkou (bývalá kapela Naive Fighters z Bratislavy), Didi z Nonconformist (legenda slovenského HC/punku) a Danom z moravskej päťky Hledání (tiež už neaktívnej) ide o kolektívne vyhlásenie solidarity.

S ostrou produkciou, nekompromisným posolstvom a jasnou identitou kapela ponúka krátke, no nezabudnuteľné vyhlásenie. A kope.

RK#43 Čítanie po rannej káve s The Public / HC-grind / 1-5-2025

2. Kto tvorí kapelu The Public, aká je jej história a aká bude jej budúcnosť?

6. Čo vás vaše pôsobenie na scéne naučilo, čo vám dalo a čo vzalo?

Skúsenosti ti nikto za tie roky nevezme, to si nekúpiš a ani nezaplatíš. Najviac si vážim ľudí, ktorých som spoznal ešte v 90-tych rokoch, sú to silné priateľstvá dodnes. Nevzalo mi to nič, nie som takto nastavený, to by som v kapele nehral.

7. Keby si sa mohol narodiť v minulosti, v ktorej dobe a kým by si chcel byť?

Nikým iným, takto je to dobre. Ani jeden deň by som nevrátil nazad žiť ho znovu.

8. Posledný videoklip, ktorý ťa zaujal a posledný album, ktorý si si točil dokola?

Klip: MIDNIGHT - Cleveland metal 2025
Album: ONDFODT - Dimsvall 2025

9. Filmová tvorba - naj horror, komédia a niečo pri čom si poplačem?

Horror: RAVENOUS 1999
Komédia: IL RAGAZZO DI CAMPAGNA 1984
Plakať môžeš pri tej komédii :)

10. Nie je spoločenský život trochu preceňovaný?

Úplne neviem ako to myslíš. Všetko čo v živote robíš je vec tvojho výberu. Robíš predsa to čo chceš, čo si si vybral. A hlavne nemusíš vôbec nič. A je to na tebe čomu prikladáš dôležitosť.

YOUNG AND IN THE WAY - pravdu povedať, hrá sa to ale presne takto.. mám celú ich diskografiu.. niektorí členovia boli obvinení zo sexuálneho napadnutia a kapela skončila..

11. Vyraďovačka - koho/čo si vyberáš a prečo ?

Testimony alebo Mentally Parasites?
Naša prvá nahrávka bol split 7" w/ MENTALLY PARASITES, ale predsa len TESTIMONY zostali dodnes neprekonateľní a kultoví.

Robert Eggers alebo Quentin Tarantino?
Tarantino, jeho snímky mi viacej sedia.

E.A.Poe alebo H.P.Lovecraft?
Sorry, tu som mimo témy.

H.Ch.Andersen alebo Pavol Dobšínsky?
Andersen zanechal vo svete podstatne väčšiu stopu. Ani by som ich neporovnával.

A všetkých ostatných by to malo zaujímať.

No a mladí na to predsa nečakajú, nikto im tu miesto nezaberá. Hrajú a veľa mladým kapelám to ide dobre.

========================================================================

1. Tell me something about your album Sanctify – who collaborated on it, how was it created, which song is your favorite and why?

The album was recorded back in 2019 and, after some delays (COVID, etc.), it was released a few years later. We all worked on it, just like on all our recordings. I think Modlite sa za mor ("Pray for the Plague") was made first – it still sounds typical for us, but at the same time, it opened up a slightly different path for our songwriting.

2. Who makes up the band The Public, what is its history, and what does the future look like?

From the very beginning – which is roughly 30 years ago – it's been the same lineup: Giňo, Horak, Ozon, and in the last few years, Kaw joined on second guitar. I’ve been through a long journey with him in other bands. We’ve closed those chapters, and now we’re only doing The Public.

3. Where can fans see you next?

Wrocław, June 21st – PUNX PIKNIK festival.

4. What are the important milestones in the life of a Slovak underground band, and what is its half-life?

The first 17 years are the hardest – after that, only death can stop you.

5. Is talent enough, or do you have to work hard?

With talent, everything comes easier and faster, but most people in bands aren’t talented, so they have to grind for everything – just like we did. But you always have to work hard.

6. What has your time on the scene taught you, what has it given you, and what has it taken away?

No one can take your experience away – you can’t buy or pay for that. What I value most are the people I met back in the '90s – those are strong friendships that last to this day. It hasn’t taken anything from me. I’m not wired that way – otherwise, I wouldn’t still be playing in a band.

7. If you could be born in the past, in which era and as whom would you like to be?

No one else – this is just fine. I wouldn’t relive a single day all over again.

8. The last music video that caught your attention and the last album you had on repeat?

Video: MIDNIGHTCleveland metal 2025
Album: ONDFODTDimsvall 2025

9. Film – your favorite horror, comedy, and something that makes you cry?

Horror: RAVENOUS (1999)
Comedy: IL RAGAZZO DI CAMPAGNA (1984)
You might cry while watching that comedy :)

10. Isn’t social life a bit overrated?

I’m not entirely sure what you mean. Everything you do in life is your choice. You do what you want, what you’ve chosen. And most importantly – you don’t have to do anything. It’s up to you what you choose to value.

11. What’s your take on the trend of food blogging, travel shows about cooking, and the social obsession with food consumption?

I live in a city that has been listed as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy since 2015, and I work in a neighboring town at a restaurant ranked among the top 10 in that city. I’ve seen a lot there – people can eat incredible amounts of food and also pay for dinner what I pay in monthly rent. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying food, if you have the money to buy it. The problem is how much gets thrown away.

At the restaurant where I work, it’s not too bad – we eat a lot of the leftover food or take it home. Many of my coworkers are Latinos with big families and limited means, so they make good use of it and waste is minimal. But in bigger restaurants, it might be a different story.

12. Short (or long) comments on the following music production (links below):

TURNSTILE – sounds like a mix of M83 and BLINK 182, sweet high school boys, would fit in well at a graduation party…

JOHNNY THE BOY – I like CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX, their entire discography. This is a darker black/sludge metal project by some of their members, sounds excellent…

NECROPHAGIA – cult band that lasted until the death of the singer and only original member… Anselmo played guitar on this album… a bit of an obscure gem…

NITE – not quite my cup of tea in metal… a bit boring for my taste… but the guitars sound good, to be fair… not the best from SEASON OF MIST REC.

HANGMAN’S CHAIR – a bit of a gothic affair in the vein of TYPE O NEGATIVE… not bad… but I prefer their older stoner albums…

NEKRODEUS – black metal/hardcore, lots of energy, I like it, even if it’s not groundbreaking…

YOUNG AND IN THE WAY – honestly, they do play exactly like this… I have their entire discography… some members were accused of sexual assault and the band disbanded…

FALSE FIGURE – I don’t know them at all, and I don’t really follow post-punk much… it all sounds too much like JOY DIVISION

EXTREME NOISE TERROR – bands like ENT or DOOM or old Swedish acts had a big influence on us in the early days… always a balm for the soul…

SHIHAD – not my cup of tea at all…

11. Choose one – who/what do you pick and why?

Testimony or Mentally Parasites?

Our first recording was a split 7" with MENTALLY PARASITES, but still, TESTIMONY remain unbeaten and cult to this day.

Robert Eggers or Quentin Tarantino?

Tarantino – his films suit me more.

E.A. Poe or H.P. Lovecraft?

Sorry, I’m out of my depth here.

H.C. Andersen or Pavol Dobšinský?

Andersen left a much bigger mark on the world. I wouldn’t even compare them.

Peťo Stašák or Robo Kazík?

Definitely Peťo Stašák. Even Kazík’s dog doesn’t like him.

Ožujsko or Karlovačko?

I’m choosing the new PROGNAN album I’m listening to right now. I’ve had enough bad beer here too.

Leader of a doomsday cult or marketing director in an international corporation?

Coincidentally, when the horrors committed by Paul Mackenzie came to light, I was near Mombasa – so I don’t have to choose his death, because he already chose it himself. And if he ever gets out of prison, he knows what’s waiting for him out there.

12. Is artistic expression an escape from reality or rather an active part and reflection of what's happening in society?

I don’t want to go too deep, but social media has been pushing individualism on us for years – and quite successfully. Just look at your friends’ profile pics on FB. Someone climbed a hill – photo. Someone gained muscle – photo. Someone went to the Eiffel Tower – photo. Someone swam in the Adriatic – photo. Etc. And everyone else is supposed to care.

It’s the same in the arts. If artists use their work to draw attention to social issues, that’s always a good thing.

13. Should music genres and subcultures mix, or is "genre purity" better?

Well, considering our own work, I think you know the answer. But in the end, it’s all your choice.

14. At what point is it better to hang up your musical craft and make space for the younger ones?
When I can no longer hold the drumsticks, that’ll be the right time.

And besides, young people aren’t waiting around – no one’s taking up their space. They’re already playing, and many young bands are doing great.
