Jolliff plays Jones is a mandolin-centered collaboration between two Oregon boys: Jacob Jolliff, who is widely regarded as one of the instrument’s greatest virtuosos, and Jesse Jones (also a mandolinist), who made his name as a composer of contemporary concert music. These two musicians met each other playing summer bluegrass festivals in the early 2000’s, and though their paths went in different stylistic directions, they have now joined forces to produce a concert hybrid of progressive bluegrass and classical music.

At the heart of the album is Jones’s folk-tinged mandolin concerto, Tune Book, a five-movement work that Jones composed specifically for Jolliff’s flashy playing style. The concerto is a tour de force for the soloist, one that features several of Jones’s original fiddle tunes, and one that explores the entire range of the instrument in rapid fire.

Flanking the concerto are two works for solo mandolin, composed by Jones during varied stages of his career. Both require pyrotechnics and sensitive musicianship from the soloist, and neither work could be in better hands than with Jolliff.

With its special blend of musical genres, Jolliff plays Jones is a crossover album for both the picker and the symphony goer.
