With her new album, JANIS steps out of the shadows where she once took refuge, embracing the light in a radiant, liberating movement - a quest for identity and freedom like no other.

“I’ve always been a trans person. With the character of Sliimy, whom I created because it was hard for me to exist in my own body and be exposed in the media, I was unconsciously laying the groundwork for my identity. Sliimy was actually just a step in my transition,” JANIS declares about her new album. With its seven tracks of venomous, addictive, and sunlit electronic soul, Cry With Us marks the transition from Sliimy - a mainstream, queer icon of the 2000s who opened for Britney Spears - to an accomplished artist who has patiently nurtured her new musical DNA, more underground, artistic, and poignant. This journey is one JANIS explores in depth in her moving and poignant book Révéler mes visages (Revealing My Faces, HarperCollins, 2024), co-written with Tal Madesta. Cry With Us is a path toward total creative openness, documented by JANIS in this new album, a highly political and poetic manifesto.

With L’Heure Bleue - five contemplative, ghostly tracks composed in Berlin in 2016, as she fled the spotlight to lose herself in queer and alternative nights, JANIS was already beginning her transition. Three years later, Solo, an intimate and heart-wrenching torch song, confirmed this shift. A personal and artistic rebirth, with clues left behind like so many breadcrumbs. Then came Pharmacoliberation, a synth-pop apotheosis written for the soundtrack of Orlando, ma biographie politique (Orlando, My Political Biography, Teddy Award – Berlinale 2023) by Paul B. Preciado, in which JANIS appears: a queer, and thus inherently political, re-reading of Virginia Woolf’s masterpiece, clearly foreshadowing what was to come.

“The six songs on Cry With Us are tracks I wrote before my transition. They weren’t finished, but I didn’t want to let them go or abandon them, because I loved them so much. I reworked them because I wanted them to follow me through my transition: they already carried echoes of what I was going to experience. I wanted to find meaning, to transition these songs, to own what they were saying before, and to tell myself that my past could coexist with what I’m living today. I can’t just erase the past…”

Initially composed with Appolo Noir, whom she met in Paris - a genius of analog synthesizers and experimental textures, a discreet producer who knows how to step back and let the artist breathe - Cry With Us was later reworked with Chris, a musician and producer based in Marseille, known for the project Confuse. Enriched with textured, nebulous guitars and bass, and carried by the voice of guest artist Bella Baguena on the track Stay With Us, the album was polished down to the finest details, with mixing by Anotyne Nouel and mastering by Daddy Kev (multi-nominated and Grammy winner). For JANIS, this was a way to recreate a safe space, an artistic cocoon, to protect and support each other, as she confirms: “A very important aspect of this new album is that I only worked with allies, friends, people who bring real political weight to this project, both in its creation and its dissemination. It’s certainly this sisterhood that carried me and explains why I cried so much in the studio.”

The album features Time To Start Again, a troubled, dark, and addictive soul track, streaked with dramatic synth layers, whose title sounds like a manifesto; Cry With Us, a modern soul storm lost in the mist; Dolls, a rebellious synth-pop bubble haunted by the shadow of Prince; Janis, a synthetic, moving dream-pop track, all breath and emotion; Fatima, an intimate and universal confession that sends shivers down the spine; and Stay With Us, featuring Bella Baguena, which extends Fatima into a skin-deep chorus dedicated to sisterhood. “I took the time to reflect, which I never did with Sliimy, who was a cry of urgency, raw and spontaneous, born from the discrimination I’d endured since childhood. With Appolo Noir, I created a palette of sensations and colors to musically define JANIS, with a radical and experimental approach. The idea, with everyone involved in this album, was to finally take our time, to protect each other, to support each other, to create spaces where I felt free.”

An album of transformation and musical epiphany, Cry With Us is an ode to rebirth and acceptance, a quest for identity, an act of resilience, a frontal breakthrough into the light that JANIS turns into strength. But beyond that, it’s a broader project that concerns us all, where JANIS, drawing from her own experience, sketches a future where emancipation is first and foremost a political statement. “My voice has opened up, it breathes more,” she confides. “This album is about putting symbols and poetry back into our journeys - the tears, lineage, our relationship with society, the rise of racism and fascism, etc. - to protect ourselves. Cry With Us is the sanctuary of my transition!”
