Ik that there used to be Diagonlemmy, but, IMHO, we should create an instance that is exclusive to Harry Potter, and the Wizarding World.
Perhaps call the instance Wizarding.World, or something.
That way, Fediverse users who wish to interact with Harry Potter material can, and other users/instances/etc, can defederate/don’t have to.
Harry Potter is only going to become more popular.
The HBO Harry Potter series is coming. Whether we like it or not, the HP fandom is about to have a significant resurgence, and it’s going to find a home somewhere on the internet.
The question is whether that somewhere is Reddit, Discord, and corporate platforms — or whether the Fediverse gets there first and shapes what that community looks like.
People flock to spaces where they feel familiar and welcomed.
Rowling will profit from HP whether a Lemmy instance exists or not.
The Fediverse needs more projects that make immediate sense to people, and it needs to stop ceding entire fandoms to corporate platforms by default.
The move isn’t to reject the fandom.
The move is to build the instance with explicit values — pro-trans, pro-queer, progressive moderation, zero tolerance for bigotry.
Pull HP fans into federated, open spaces and surround them with those values.
That’s far more powerful than gatekeeping.

I Cross-posted this to Fediverse @ Lemmy.World

EDIT EDIT:
It would also most likely be beneficial, given that the instance would give a space to all of the existing potterheads out there.
Plus, most of the existing instances wouldn’t have to deal with HP/JK conversations and media, because all of the admin and whatnot of the various different instances could tell any users that try to please keep all HP/JK media to the Wizarding.World (or WizardingWorld.Lemmy, or whatever name the instance potentially ends up having).
Ie
Similar to how a Quarantine works.
Plus, it would help to bring in a ton of new users, to the Fediverse.
I’ll speak as an instance owner who runs a niche community for people who on Lemmy are definitely not in the major opinion.
You are never going to get the admin power needed to let your community grow on a public instance. People downvote at even the mention of Harry Potter. It doesn’t matter what the topic is, people are reactionary. There are also people who I’ve dubbed “downvote trolls” who will go our of their way to make sure to downvote every post your community has, seemingly to try and kill it. Being an admin of your instance gives you more power to find the trolls and permaban them.
That all being said, it is A LOT more work to evangelize your community. It will be hard to find, and harder to get traction. There is also risk hosting your own instance, because you are personally on the line if someone posts shit to it.
So, good and bad. Feel free to dm me for more thoughts.

I think this is fairly well covered by jet’s Moderation Policy for Niche Communities. While obviously admins have more power, I think downvote trolls can be adequately addressed by moderators with existing tools.
Thanks for the ping! (FYI, user mentions in post bodies don’t notify the user, so thanks for putting one here)
Sorry I’ve not been more active recently. I’ve been a bit busy with life and have barely been able to keep on top of the spaceflight communities I assist with.

Welcome.
That’s fine.
I also recommend this community over on the r/HarryPotterHBO Subreddit.
They’ve been having issues with a ton of spam posts, as well as most of their mods being kicked.
Eh, I think a community or communities is enough for those interested. Not sure that there’s a ton of people on Lemmy clamoring for an entire instance devoted to anything JKR related but you never know.
Harry Potter is only going to become more popular.
ESPECIALLY with the series, on the way.
Maybe wait to see if it actually makes it past 1-2 seasons. There’s a lot of press about them planning to do like 7 seasons or whatever but I can guarantee they’ll stop dumping money into producing future seasons if they feel the series isn’t doing well enough.
Personally haven’t thought about watching the series, forgot it was a thing until your post.
No. [Jedi Power On] The Harry Potter IP doesn’t exist, forget it.
Trans people are real and being constantly shat on by a class of people who’ll never experience hunger, so I’ll support real people in trouble, especially if I can do it by simply ignoring a campy IP. Fuck JK Rowling [Jedi Power On] who doesn’t exist too, btw.
There are plenty of other cool “magic school” novels and such, so it’s not hard to find an alternative (or something new) to latch onto. Ask a librarian!
No. It won’t last. I posted about it in the other thread but that’s the gist of it.
Hello gabe, hope you’re doing fine!
Interesting ideas. I’ll happily post wherever the community decides, but I definitely don’t have the resources to run an instance myself. Are you volunteering to run it?
As you mention, DiagonLemmy existed, but didn’t last long. I’m not convinced it’s worth trying again, but would be open to the possibility.
I wish that I could run it.
But I definitely don’t have time, knowledge, or resources, to run one.

Someone in the Fediverse @ Lemmy.world community shared with me this:

It’s a third party hosting service for Lemmy instances / Matrix, that you pay via a subscription.

Especially with the series on its way, we should learn not to monetarily support people that are a bad force towards humanity as a whole. And as a part of that, that universe, while fantastic, should be transferred to a chapter in history books.
How would we be monetarily support them?
Personal stance on it: I used to be a huge HP, really involved into the universe and everything.
But what JKR is doing lately is too much. I stopped thinking about HP or sharing HP memes with my friends, as giving the franchise relevance still gives it popularity and hence money.
i would absolutely love and welcome a Harry Potter or Hogwarts instance. I’d absolutely make an account there too.
the only issue I see would be that an instance like that would require heavy moderation to make sure stuff stays chill.
but I know there’s quite a lot of lemmings that would love it, myself included.
It would be great for an instance like that, then take all of JK’s hate and pin it to the top so everyone can see the hate they are funding with her fandom.
Go for it! I’m shocked at all the negitive comments and downvotes.
I’m not. I’m not a part of the fandom anymore and that had nothing to do with the author and everything to do with both other fans and growing away from something I grew up with as a kid.
Everytime I actually hear anything about something HP related it’s always people urging fans not to partake of the thing. That’s how I found out about the game. It’s how I found out about the new show. It’s a miracle that it’s not how I found out about this post.
I feel like the controversy surrounding the brand is keeping it afloat in a lot of ways. Because if you so much as mention the franchise people come out of the woodwork to accuse you of being a terrible person.
At my age you start to realize that there’s perilously little media content that’s not connected to a company or entity that’s terrible in some way. About the best you can do is try to avoid things you know are harmful, but even then that only goes so far. Try asking someone why they don’t boycott Disney or Lego or whatever if they don’t support the TERF Queen. I guarantee that you’ll get at least a few who don’t care how much she makes from residuals through those companies.
