Paper Lily - Chapter 1

Something terrible has happened. You can’t bear to think about it - but you can’t live like this anymore. You stopped attending school, you haven’t left your house in months, you have no reason to get out of bed anymore. There are no choices left.
No choice except... that strange golden letter.
It’s time to get your life back together.

Paper Lily is a horror RPG game in which you can solve each puzzle in multiple different ways. Explore a hidden world, meet strange characters, and guide Lacie as she attempts to find answers about her unusual condition.
There is always another way.
The game is playable in about 4 hours (probably). As was the case with Project Kat on its first release, the game contains only 1 ending but multiple variations depending on your actions. An update with the endings is coming soon!
Paper Lily - Chapter 1 is the continuation to the prologue, Project Kat, but it can also be enjoyed without having played it.

We are still only two idiots making this game: Any comment, review, email, or any other sort of love we get helps feed our souls so that we can channel our magic powers into making Chapter 1 (and the rest of the game) better for everyone!
Please note that there are a few things we needed to temporarily remove/disable from Chapter 1 in its current state, namely:
- Multiple endings
- Collectibles
- A few extra secrets and interactions
If you run into a situation where you would have triggered a dead end, you will receive a generic game over screen instead (don't panic, it's a placeholder).

MacOS Users: please be aware of a feature called Gatekeeper, which may show the message "This application is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the trash" when opening Paper Lily. You can find information on how to bypass this error in this video. Alternatively, you can try to install Paper Lily using the Itch App.

I just finished it! It was kinda depressing and sad (especially in the true end when Sai didn't go home with Lacie) but also amazing! I enjoyed it a lot! I'm willing to replay it again and again until I discover all of the possible things I can do... For example I didn't find runes for Rune, and I didn't save Aoi, and I couldn't open that mysterious box in Miss Knives' house, etc... But I'll see.
Hope you finish the game soon... I wish I could help but I'm just a broke person hehe...

Never saw something like this here on itch before. Sure, some VNs are very good - and some are more interactive than others, but never there were such a big adventure game available here for what I know.
The atmosphere is the best. The decent horror effects alternated with calm places, combined with the music and retro-looking map create an atmosphere, extremely popular games reached about 10-20 years ago. Hell, some of the secret passages and endings are really difficult to find but give the game the extra spice. I can't believe it was done only by two people.
Please make sure the story continues. Never had such a good game for a very long time. As soon it will be released, I'll play it!

Sorry if this question seems annoying, but is this game still in development? I can't really open Twitter very easily (long story), so it's not like I can easily check. But anyway, I've been playing through lately, and I'm really enjoying this, so I hope that, even if Chapter 1 is already fully done, that Chapter 2 is on the works. The story is very intriguing.

10/10 game. I can't think of anything to complain about.
does anyone know how to fix the lag? when i was at the house everything was still smooth but once i reached the forest everything started becoming laggy. not sure whether it's because i'm using an old macbook air but pls lmk if there's a way to fix it thanks! i still love the game but it's annoying due to how laggy it is.
update: lowering the resolution made it much smoother!!
Among the screen settings, lower the internal resolution until your computer can handle it. I am running at 1x and its not bad at all

one of my favorite games i played, the worldbuilding was incredible and i had so much fun exploring and solving the puzzles! i was shocked when it ended because i wanted to keep playing.. can't wait to see chapter two and what the devs come up with! :)
I have played and made a video series on YouTube, but it's not finished yet; once I finish, I will write my opinion about the game. I liked it, at least the part that I played.

This game is pretty much at the level of Undertale / Deltarune in both length and quality!!! For me, it was like reading a captivating book that I could not put down for hours. An experience I last really had while reading Harry Potter books for the first time.
Although the description currently says that 4 hours is the expected time to get to the true ending, it might take you around 6 or 7 hours if you like to explore many possibilities like I do. And even after those 7 hours, there will very likely be many secrets you missed or only half-uncovered, and you could be tempted to go back and have a look. You should expect a world and story that have your imagination run wild with theories!
For the record, I played on MacOS, and it was no problem at all to immediately get rid of the gatekeeper block currently mentioned in the description. While actually playing the game, I encountered virtually no issues.
(P.S., I am a pianist, and this soundtrack seems worth playing for me! And that's something I only say for the catchiest game music I come across.)
It was a bit hard to understand what to do but then when i ride the bus everything turned to be awesome! The puzzles are cool and the visuals are comfy! The gameplay and the characters are well made.
