  • Okay I know this is c/greentext and its not a serious comm, still just wanna infodump lol:

    So… in 1st grade I was in China…

I remember them doing National Anthem… very similar to the US lol (as in the ritual, not the melody lol)

They use rulers to hit kids lol… 😭

I lucked out because my family emigrated…

Forgot if I ever got hit by a teacher… if I did, I must’ve deleted that memory since it sounds kinda traumatizing…

And they made us RECITE AN ENTIRE STORY! (Children’s story, but still) They made us stay afterschool for that 😭

I STILL REMEMBER the 9x9 times table “poem” thingy from first grade, it’s forever burned into my head (okay this might be 2nd grade tbf, forgot when I learned it exactly)

    Article I found: https://yoyochinese.com/blog/Learn-Chinese-Multiplication-Rhyme-Time-Tables)

Oh yes I can sing the Chinese national anthem¹ + the American one too…

they played it too much the melody is forever stored in my hippocampus

(¹Okay I might have looked up the exact lyrics later on as a teen…)

And if I sing both, I get both sides to hate me… xD

I feel like that kindergarden, 1st, 2nd grade… just those few years of school there makes me very distinct from ABCs (American-Born Chinese).

  • Idk why but in my parent’s social circle… everyone seem to be some type of successful small bussiness owner and own several rentals or a bunch of stocks or like doing international trade or whatever…

Like one of my aunts owns a 4 family home in Brooklyn and lease two of them out and combined two units on the 1st floor into 1… her husband is a college professor and has a real estate license… and also a bunch of trade licenses…

(this is not the “married at 21 and have kids” story, its a different story)

they have so much video game consoles at home…

Their kids constantly go to some PAID afterschool thing and weekend school… (from what I heard)

And I assume they also had to go to Chinese school since I’ve been told they learned Chinese? (lolol I didn’t have to cuz I actually went to 2nd grade in China so I already knew how to read)

Like… literally the stereotypical Asian family… BUT THEY HAVE VIDEO GAME CONSOLES AND I DIDNT EVEN GET ANY WTF MOM?

So I was told this cousin, around my age, apparantly went to go on to do international bussiness and “made millions of dollars” like early 20s…

    Nah I think they’re exaggerating…

Their mom and dad (the mom is my aunt, who is my dad’s sister) owns real estate I think…

I mean they used to have one in Philly and they asked my dad and mom to do property management for them… but later they sold it cuz its was too far and too much of a hassle…

And my mom also have another friend (old classmate? or like and old teacher she used to have?) in Philly that owns like 5 rentals…

Like my parents social circle is so weird…

like everyone is just “middle class” and if you are just living paycheck to paycheck, you lose “face”…

Like I think the vast majority of Chinese immigrants own their homes…

So not owning a home is actually considered a failure lol…

  • Mom: “I grew up with nothing, your grandparents didn’t give us anything, yet look at how much I’ve built [they have like a few hundred thousand to possibly 1 mill USD in assets], why can’t you do the same?”

And funny thing is she also admitted that luck is part of the equation, but then still shamed us anyways…

Like she often points to my cousin around my age that apprantly is doing some bussiness stuff overseas and made millions in profits…

    And like

    Oh this is funny:

“Look at NYC! An IMMIGRANT BECAME MAYOR! [she’s talking about Mamdani] You came here at 8 years old, why can’t you be just like him?”

    😭

Idk mom, Mamdani’s mom seems nicer than you… maybe that’s why… lmfao

  • Okay disclaimer: I did not actually say that type of stuff, especially not in the capital. I wouldn’t dare actually saying it irl while in China.

But parents and grandparents were alive in the Mao era, they’ve seen lots of shit, the struggle sessions…

They talk about it in the livingroom/diningroom a lot…

I was raised with the “do not criticize government” mindset when I was old enough to start having these opinions.

Suppressing dissent is actaully tame compared to the fact that I was the 2nd child of my family and I wasn’t even legal, if they had found out that my mom had me, they would have taken her and forced an abortion. (circa 2002)

My mom told me about that One Child Policy stuff and I told her I hate the CCP, then she’s like “Okay you can say it at home, but be careful don’t say it outside, don’t post these things [meaning political things] online, the goverment people might come and you’d be in trouble” (paraphrased from Cantonese)

And when she said that, she meant it as in both criticisms against PRC and US government, so since we’re now in the US and she fear arrestes or deportations if we criticize the US government too much, and she also don’t wanna get banned from China / and she still have sisters (aka: my aunts) living there… So I was told to just focus on my life, to stop “worrying about things I can’t change”

  • “90% white” I’d get shredded in there.

I’m Chinese American. I get so much casual racism in my school with 30% Asians… can’t imagine 90% white school…

I remember my elementary public school I used to go to in Brooklyn had like 25% to 50% Asians (probably most of them ethnically Chinese). Once we moved ro Philly, racial demographics shifted and instead of being simply bullied because I’m new and my English sucked, it shifted to actual racism… (Oh btw bullying within one’s own race is also a thing btw… just cuz language barrier lol. A lot of American-Born Chinese classmated bullied me too in that elementary school… even though there was not actual inter-racial conflicts)

When I was 17, I got into a fight in my Philly high school, self defence btw… got arrested :(

    Charges dismissed

    Almost got expelled.

I hated that school so I just took the GED.

    Greetings from Philly!

  • China needs to learn nothing form other countries.

    So perfect.

Like how my parents from China tells me that I’m a man and am “unmanny” for crying. (男子漢大丈夫,流汗不流淚)Men aren’t allowed to display emotions…

Like how depression doesn’t exist and all I need to go outside for a walk and need to 振作啲 開朗啲…

Like how they casually describe locking up people in a village perceived to be “crazy” (think: ADHD, Autism, Down Syndrome… etc)… like you aren’t allowed in society… you’re trapped like a pet in a cage… or animals in a barn…

Like how they use words like 低B (a deorgratory term) to describe anyone perceived to be “stupid”

Like how unions don’t exist and strikes are illegal.

    etc…

    Perfect society.

Video games are bad, go study more.

Oh, if your children ever stuggle, just criticize them in order to pushe them further ahead. That’s Chinese Parenting Love. Wonderful!

Depressed kid? No worries. Tell them. Hey, why are you such a useless eater, do you wanna be a burden to society? Such a disappointment!

There you go, now the kid will definitely have the confidence to get ahead in life and totally not kill themselves.

The Chinese Style of parenting is sooo perfect!

Hey maybe if reincarnation exists, you even get to be born to a Chinese family your next life!

(Honestly tho… I wonder if I was a tankie my previous life so my reward for this life is getting born to Chinese parents… 🫠)
