  • Did you win? Sounds like you probably did if he got so frothingfash about it. On the other hand, just because one of them throws a hissy fit at the drop of a hat or gets physically threatening doesn’t mean they failed to get their way.

I knew and had to spend a lot of time with a former small business owner who lost her ~100 employee business and ended up living the worst nightmare of any capitalist: being a wage worker. Having to exist on the other side of the class divide and get exploited rather than do the exploitation went a long way in humbling her I think, though it happened a decade before I met her. But she still remained one of the most petulant people, totally unable to admit to having any fault or being wrong in any way and was always just so childish for the most asinine reasons. (Though to be fair I’ve also known life long proles with similar issues).

Small business owners really do put the “petty” in the term petty bourgeoisie.

  • lemmy.world has the bread-and-circuses that you’re looking for.

Yes. Along with all the rabid pro-western propaganda, chauvanism, unexamined privilege, and the insufferable confidence in mistaking naivete and ignorance for common knowledge. You know, all the stuff that should make you feel right at home if all you’re looking for is a reddit 2.0. Then again, there are a number of instances to choose from if that’s what you’re looking for, but .world remains the classic example.

  • Edit: In case anyone else ran into a pay wall or just doesn’t want to give them traffic: https://archive.ph/YAzCl

Sounds like they’re just taking leftist terminology and applying it inappropriately to their usual propagandistic narrative. They’re literally quoting Gramsci but hedging with “his Marxist convictions notwithstanding.” Gramsci was referring to Marxism in that quote you dipshits! It’s like saying “Marx’s Marxism aside” while talking about Marxist principles.

It’s filled with the usual lies that so many of them undoubtedly believe, an attempt at analysis under the given assumption that the US was this great force for peace in the world rather than its primary source of conflict.

But for the most part, Pax Americana used remarkable power to support a remarkably broad view of self-interest—a sense that even a geographically isolated giant could thrive only by helping to make weaker countries prosperous and secure. That combination produced history-bending benefits. After two world wars in one generation, the U.S.-built order delivered decades of great-power peace. The U.S.-led economy produced soaring living standards. U.S. influence helped make democracy dominant and “state death”—the violent eradication of independent countries—shocking and rare.

Up is down, left is right. Nonsense. You can’t reach any meaningful or valid conclusions about the present if you butchered historical reality to that degree. And yet they call Russia and China “revisionist.” /spit/

  • Not to get all pedantic, but I think there may be some confusion over what phenomena is being described here. I have no idea what the correct terminology is for objects in flight. But for vehicles on the ground, fishtailing is when the rear end of the vehicle slides side to side due to loss of traction, like if the brakes lock, or can just happen on a slippery surface, when the driver oversteers (left and right) to keep control while maintaining forward momentum. I think that’s what u/sodium_nitride was talking about, what the plane in the video looked like it was doing.

Tailgating just means that one vehicle is following another one too closely, that’s it. Tailgating is bad behavior by the driver in the back vehicle because it risks collision if the vehicle in front stops suddenly.

Very cool diagram for overshooting, though.

  • That doesn’t really address what I was wondering though. First of all, Bernie wasn’t successfully elected, for all the reasons you pointed out. But as an already-elected mayor of one of the largest and most politically and economically significant cities in the US, Mamdani (or a hypothetical actual socialist) has a fair amount of potential power to accomplish good things already despite the media control.

expose, disrupt, misdirect, discredit or otherwise neutralize literally any inconvenience ain’t that hard.

It’s not as though they didn’t try to do that with Mamdani already, because they tried to prevent his election using media control and failed. I realize they could ramp all that up, but he’s already in there doing some good things with the OP being an example, and I think there could be room for a lot more that bourgeois media control alone wouldn’t be able to prevent or squelch. And at some point, more drastic measures would have to be taken. I was just thinking about how far it could go before that happened, again despite media control. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t and never did think Mamdani would end up doing more than any typical socdem working within the capitalist structure, but I get very curious about where the potential lines are.

  • I guess it’s going to be tolerated as long as the damage to them is less than the damage which would be caused by removing him, and thus delegitimizing the remaining perceptions of democracy in the states

It makes me wonder just where that boundary is and how much he could feasibly do before it was decided, public perception of legitimacy be damned, that he must be taken out. That’s not to say I think he’ll ever actually even begin to approach that line, being the social democrat that he is. But when positive material gains like this are achieved, small as they may be in the grand scheme, I can’t help but wonder how much more might be possible within the given bourgeois framework before the ruling class deemed him or any hypothetical elected socialist too much of a nuisance to be worth maintaining the facade of democracy and just take him out.

    Great comment btw.
