I don’t think it’s so much about US having soft power over China. I agree they have always been highly resistant to it. The important bit is that Chinas soft power is growing faster than probably any nation’s has since post WW2 US while US hemorrhages what little they have left in the coffers.
I don’t present this as a good thing uniformly, because China is certainly capable of becoming fascist in a single generation too. I think this sort of power in general is problematic.

I’m not qualified, but something that might aid in your efforts is focusing on the flaws inherent in getting fulfillment from other people and the cycle of misery it can bring when it doesn’t pan out exactly as you intended. Never done this, except cybersex. I didn’t know her husband, but I knew he was her husband and we all played an mmo together. I convinced myself that he knew and didn’t consider it cheating. Then she kept venting to me about what a bad father he was for their kid and I slowly faced the fact that she wouldn’t be trying to convince me he was bad if he knew, so I told her to keep it nonsexual from now on and she quickly moved on to another player I knew. It doesn’t feel good, especially in hindsight. If you’re ever in that position you’ll feel better in the end not kicking the person while they’re down.
