Has anyone else watched this? I thought it was very good. I haven’t really seen a TV show like that before. Usually shows in this vein make the left wing character “good but flawed” thus “centrism is the real answer”, but this one just doesn’t go for that cop out at all and everyone to the right of the main character is basically a monster (from a long line of monsters going back to the middle ages). Its still very much a pre-Blair labor party kind of leftism, but its still good TV and does point to the flaws of that worldview, particularly with the very end.
The way it deals with the security apparatus is also very on point and prescient.
I don’t want to spoil any of it, so if you haven’t seen it, watch it. It’s just three episodes and they are all on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACg6IuFfMJE
I actually haven’t, but I read the book years ago.
The book itself was a very much ‘written as fiction so I don’t get sued’ as it’s basically about Harold Wilson’s government with a bit of the CIA’s removal of the Australian PM sprinkled in. Sir Peregrine is based upon Peregrine Worsthorne, the fascist deep state journalist / broadsheet editor who said (amongst other things) that treason was acceptable so long as it was to reaffirm American interests in Britain.
I believe the author added a section after the coordinated Corbyn coup / smear campaign too, but my copy is from the 80s so I haven’t read it that bit.
I might have to give this a watch though if it’s just sat on YouTube. Cheers.
Just started, loving his answers to the gotcha journalism questions so far
Replacing nuclear power stations with coal is a silly unforced error. Also,
never, ever, give up your nukes.Having now finished episode 3, episode 4 if it existed would be about him getting got like Allende.
Yeah pretty much
He’s at that dangerous point of being radical enough that the amerikkkan capitalist hegemony absolutely cannot tolerate him but not radical enough to take steps to prevent a CIA backed military coup.
I’ve seen clips. It looks good. I like that it shines a light on the deep state and the limits of liberal democracy. It’s better than House of Cards.
I found a YouTube link in your post. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:
