My friend worked in the COVID ICU during the early days, and one patient was on ECMO for months, and eventually their fingers and toes began to drop off whenever a breeze blew through. Their family were newcomers, not much English, and the cousin kept convincing the spouse that God would heal the patient and they would grow back. The hospital had to get legal custody of him somehow to let him become palliative.

Their death was such a loss to the poetry world.

I think this is the writer’s ex. They’ve become friends, but they bought this painting with an intimate subject, and it’s bringing up memories of their previous intimacy, hanging right in the bedroom of this new relationship, where it probably overhung them when they were together. Looking at it fills the writer with all these feelings of wondering how it isn’t them sleeping beneath the painting, like what happened that they aren’t there?

No idea, but whenever I drive by the Kelsey’s near me on a weekend night it’s packed. I really don’t get why anyone would eat there. It’s not any cheaper than independent restaurants.
