I’ve read and watched Annihilation and loved both. The film is very different on the details, but it does very effectively convey the same broader-scale ideas. I think it does a great job of adapting a story in a manner that is spiritually faithful if not literally faithful. Garland describes it as “a dream of the book”, and I think that works well
I will always trust Garland to put the effort in when setting the scene but it is excellent to see lots of real life props and costumes

Constituency is the term here, although we’ve also got the regions under the mixed system. I didn’t know that Canada called them ridings, I had only ever heard that as a term for the parts of Yorkshire before. Etymologically the word derives from “a third”,as in 33% of something, and the idea of a country as huge as Canada only having three electoral districts is amusing me
I would expect that that’s most likely to be a mistake, as the SNP are generally one of the more pro-immigrant parties and it would surprise me if they’re checking the citizenship of everyone whose letterbox they put stuff through

I’m an outside observer and won’t pretend to be particularly well-informed on Bulgarian politics, but the new PM was president until a few months ago, so it doesn’t seem like it’s actually a huge shift. He and his coalition seem more concerned about Bulgaria not helping Ukraine than about preventing the EU from doing so
Seems like the artist is basing it on this 1943 map by Richard Edes Harrison, which is from an atlas full of unusual perspectives that was aiming to illustrate WWII geopolitics for an American audience. Cook has a reddit post about it but the links are all broken now, so I’m not 100% certain that it’s this one, but it seems likely
Ohhh my mother had been hoping to do the Primitivo. She never got the chance to, sadly, and I don’t share the religious faith that made her want to do it, but since I do enjoy a hike anyway I should maybe consider doing at least part of it myself one day

I’m a big history fan so I really wanted to visit the Alhambra, but it turns out that tickets sell out months in advance. Fortunately you can still visit the grounds, and those are lovely too. I really like the classical guitar piece Recuerdos de la Alhambra (Memories of the Alhambra), so I found a nice spot to sit and just listen to it for a while there. Malaga itself has a lovely alcazar too, of course!
I’d love to go walk the Caminito del Rey too, so I think I will simply have to go back one day
