  • Climate change is a factor no doubt, but I imagine the massive Antarctic krill harvesting industry that has grown over 400% in the the last decade or two and still exponentially increasing - using krill in everything from vitamin supplements to pet food to farmed animal feedstocks - is a much larger impact on the near-coast surface krill that the seals feed on.

On paper it’s a regulated industry by the independent international Marine Stewardship Council group - but go have a look in shops and see if you can find a single bottle of ‘Antarctic krill oil’ that has the MSC council ‘blue fish tick label’ that certifies the supply chain has been independently assessed to be sustainable.

I have not found a single one.

  • Yeah, I know the US populace isn’t a monolith, but we hear the ‘freedom’ lines a lot and it’s fatiguing. Globally we’re absolutely rooting for those guys to overcome the system that works against them, and to peel open the glued-shut eyes of the ‘freedum’ variety citizens to show them reality.

There are similar attitudes worldwide and we have to fight it ourselves regularly to keep it from damaging our own country’s progress.

  • The NYT haven’t changed. They’ve been aligned with corporate greed and neo-conservative goals and attitudes for at least 40 years. Yes you can find individual articles that don’t, but editorially they always have.

Though they always presented their image as ‘social liberal progressive attitudes’ and ‘fiscal responsibility with social support’, if you look at their actual reporting track record they’ve helped manufacture consent for almost every US war of the last 30+ years, and have consistently sided with the desires of whatever government is currently in power and fiscal conservative attitudes throughout.

  • Their freedom always boils down to I’m allowed the freedom to make terrible choices, whereas your pussy government tries to care for and protect your community. Be it gun access, their healthcare system, food safety, gambling regulation, medical programs, pollution laws… (this list in almost infinite).

By their yardstick, the most freedom-loving countries in the world are just those where money buys you access and permission to everything - Somalia, Sudan, Cameroon, Cambodia, North Korea, Russia… you know… the same places they call shitholes.

One day they’ll maybe figure out collectively that they have been had by the wealthy, who advertise and campaign to trick them into voting against taxation and regulation and protections that benefit them and their whole community, but it won’t be anytime soon.

  • In my experience arguing with older Murdoch/con-media brainwashed relatives that look similar to this caricature… logical appeals don’t help, and explaining why their position is hypocricritical (as in this accurate meme), just inflames them and they flip through there ‘angry index’ of whataboutisms to pivot to, like their media talking heads do - one angry subject to the next.

Everyone that disagrees with them feels like a personal attack because their positions are held by feelings of safety, fear, and the perceived comfort of never having to change. Disagreement attacks that core.

TLDR; meme funny, don’t try this IRL.

  • Yeah just block em dude. I enjoy your comments. Including this one.

There’s a fair percentage of people I’d say are mentally ill or at least like you say… Seem to be constantly experiencing the worst day of their lives here. I just block them and move on with life - I’m not their therapist.

My experience of Lemmy after blocking just 40 or so users, (and shit communities that I don’t want to see posts from) has changed greatly for the positive. Don’t let them drag you down, there’s plenty of room here for reasonable opinions.
