No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Distro for upgrading a 15 year old Mac?
3·13 days agoI have a 2012 macbook pro, the battery life of apple products is notoriously bad under Linux. I got a new battery and still couldn’t get 3 hours of usage out of it.
That aside, linux runs great when you get it to boot. I didn’t have any luck getting Ubuntu to boot but Fedora and Manjaro run really well. I’m a fan of Gnome, I’d recommend walking your friend through different desktop environments.
The biggest issue I have with PostmarketOS is their documentation for new users is horrendous.
I tried installing it on a 2012 Nexus 7 and couldn’t get past the jargon.
I was talking about how you have everything organized, it looks great.
Could you point to how you get something like this started?
I run Home Assistant on a RPi4 but have a capable computer I would love to use for self hosting, especially immich.

I tried using Graphene in September when they said they got it working but the best I got was a day before I had to jump through hoops to get it connected again.
If they fixed it this month I’d love to jump in and try again.

I’ve been wondering about this, how does hiding the activity from your ISP, as well as the ISP of the person streaming from your server, work?
I have friends I’d like to share my library with but am always nervous about the risk.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What's it going to take to truly stop the US?
9·4 months agoWorld War 3 isn’t the answer, not with the biggest players in the defense industry being US based.
If the change in power were due to military power, the EU would have to switch to not relying on the US…which is what they’re starting to do!
A more reasonable scenario would be financial: the world deciding to not use the US dollar as the currency standard and start cashing in the US debt.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's the biggest case of planned obsolescence you've dealt with?
12·4 months agoApple pisses me off. I have a 2012 MacBook Pro that could have continued to be supported, Apple just decided it wasn’t in their best interest to continue supporting it and if I want to continue I’ll just have to buy a new one!
My MacBook is on MacOS 13 thanks to open core legacy.
Thank you!
I watched her Star Wars cruise line one a while ago and really enjoyed it. I don’t understand why they just don’t turn that into a hotel.

I cry for Windows 8. It was completely half baked, but, I loved the change. I think that’s why I’m also a huge fan of Gnome.
