Autism@lemmy.world•It's unacknowledged how much of civilization operates on "pretend to be working"
21·11 days agoThat’s why I think we can have the same productivity with less work time per day (or week), yet still there’s tendencies everywhere to increase work time unnecessarily for “the economy”.

As a hobby I’m dabbling into local LLM shenanigans and self-hosting.
Professionally I’m working on a VR training sandbox involving trains and signal boxes.
Let’s hope the link lasts 70 more years

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What were the best thing(s) for you about moving out of your parents home?
9·25 days agoBeing able to make my own decisions and experiences instead of getting them laid out before me. Having my own household and agency over my life did a lot and also improved my relationship with my parents.
Only for me to move back after 10 years, take over the property and am now looking after them instead of the other way around.
Yes, it’s true

Unpopular Opinion@lemmy.world•I immediately skip any games that are described as "roguelike" or "soulslike"English
2·1 month agoI came down a similar way. Though after years of hearing about the greatness of the genre, especially from FromSoftware games with their masterful design, I could no longer deny my interest, considering I try to be a curious and unbiased person. So I went with Elden Ring. I’ve dropped it several times, because I was bored and it felt like I was wasting time. I still did 100% out of spite, then buried it with no intent to touch it ever again. Still, I appreciate the game design, especially the enemies and the variety of viable builds. However I personally don’t care for these things at all in games, so it wasn’t really something that was meant for me to be enjoyed. I think it’s similar to many of the more popular games of the genre, so I usually skip them. I don’t mind the occasional rougelite to pick up and drop after a few hours though.
PS. I feel bad for FromSoftware. People praise their stuff to the heavens. I’ve seen a handful of people giving constructive criticism only to be met with hate. I’m pretty sure FromSoftware would prefer to receive the criticism to improve instead of being praised from all sides. But then again, I’m not deep enough in their rabbit hole, so that’s just what I see.
Yeah, I’ve heard they manage XR now, though it was fairly bare bones last time I checked.
I can’t say if it’s on the same level of what the industry would like to have though. I’d like to use Godot more, though I’m stuck with Unity in my job, mostly because switching engines doesn’t make sense at this point.
But I would consider Godot for any new project and definitely recommend everyone else to do the same.

World News@lemmy.world•Iran tells world to get ready for oil at $200 a barrel as it fires on commercial shipsEnglish
23·1 month agoWasn’t the Venezuela oil basically worthless because proper extraction would be too expensive to be viable?
Yes, but Unity keeps an advantage considering pure compatibility, not only with the target platform (many mobile games run Unity), but also other technologies (AR is a good example).
However that’s usually more interesting for industry than actual game development, so your point stands.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Did you drink alcohol when you were younger than me?
4·1 month agoAbout the same here. Friends were drinking soft alcohol constantly at parties. I stuck to one bottle and took all night for it, because I had to force it. Nowadays I gave up on alcohol completely. So I won’t hope for something I like and grab the soft drink straight away.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Thermostats compatible with selfhosted Home AssistantEnglish
3·1 month agoI second that solution. I’ve built the same setup for my home last Christmas, even tried different brands of TRVs to see which one I like. Works perfectly well with a Raspberry Pi with Home Assistant. The only issues I ran into were my lack of experience.

I’m in the same boat. For many things I have zero experience in, LLMs provide me with good guidance and starting points. For me it was self-hosting and Smart Home. Of course hallucinations are real and the output can be nonsense, especially if your questions become increasingly niche. However some healthy skepticism, evaluation of answers and additional sources (just searching for key words online) keep me moving forward.
Just don’t try to learn anything dangerous from it, like identifying mushrooms.
