When should I be concerned whether or not a provider comes with a newsreader?

You shouldn’t. There are enough free and working newsreaders for everyone. Usenet protocol is not exactly cutting edge technology.

Is a newsreader the same thing as an indexer?

Not to my knowledge. In “official” terminology an indexer is a process that fills a search engine’s database with the stuff it’s crawler finds. Easily possible that some usenet provider calls their (or some third party’s) newsreader an “indexer” to make it sound more important. Marketing speech is full of neologisms like that.

No, tbh I’d be a little concerned if it did IMO

The provider is kinda like the ISP you connect to for the internet

Your newsreader is like your web browser

    You can choose each independently

Got it, so if I were to subscribe to a provider, and use a couple of other indexers, and plug those into the sabnzb, I would have zero use for a newsreader?

Unless you actually wanted to browse the (mostly dead these days) forum side of Usenet, then no, sabnzb is operating as your newsreader in this scenario

Sabnzbd is your newsreader in that setup.
