This is in New York. The US has never been part of the Rome Statute, which is the treaty that established the International Criminal Court.

Every American leader since Clinton has been too cowardly to commit to prosecuting war criminals. Maybe not too surprising since there’s a strong argument to be made that they have all been war criminals themselves.

What’s new with Trump is that he’s actively attacking the ICC, but America has always been a safe haven for war criminals. “Nazi, Schmazi!” says Wernher von Braun.

That said, hasn’t Mamdani promised to arrest Netanjahu if he wins the Mayoral race?

            No, bibi is rich and

            okay

which means he will never get in any real trouble in the US

The rich will sooner personally shoot Mamdani on 5th avenue than allow this to happen

From a legal standpoint, the Rome statute only grants ICC jurisdiction in places that signed the statute, which New York does not have the power to do. The US constitution grants the president (with consent of senate) exclusive authority to enter into treaties.

If he’s within physical jurisdiction and Mamdani directs the NYPD to honor the ICC arrest warrant… I don’t have the legal credentials to say whether or not that would fly

The US isn’t a party to the ICC and I’m guessing Netanyahu has some form of diplomatic immunity.

The institutions are scatterd around the world, but the general assembly is in the headquarters in NYC. I guess the idea was that it’s the capital of the world or something.

Embassies work that way. The French embassy is French land for example.

          Made me look!

Although the structure is physically situated in the United States, the land occupied by the United Nations headquarters and the spaces of buildings that it rents are under the sole administration of the United Nations. They are technically extraterritorial through a treaty agreement with the U.S. government. However, in exchange for local police, fire protection, and other services, the United Nations agrees to acknowledge most local, state, and federal laws.

Guessing they could arrest him, but how are they getting him to the airport? By land or by air, you’d have to cross the United States.

The US is not a signatory to the rome statute and does not participate in the ICC so the warrant means nothing.

I wasn’t sure if they were clapping for him or the people that walked out. If it was for him, you’d think they were meeting a celebrity or somethin. Just another thing in the really weird behavior pile. Treating politicians like celebrities or singers just doesn’t make sense.

I’m pretty sure they are applauding the ones walking out. The decision to sit is not necessarily a message of support to Netanyahu, but a product of national policy. The Norwegian foreign minister was among the people who sat, in spite of being outspoken pro Palestine.

It could be regular conference etiquette. Every conference I have been to with speakers have as applause as the speaker takes the stage.

But I choose to believe they are congratulating those with a spine who walk out while a he talks.

I don’t think the people clapping in the upper tiers are UN delegates, maybe observers or aides of some sort.

Bummed to see the Philippines sitting it out (bottom of the screen). OTOH, they got their own with mass civil protest and don’t want to annoy the US when they need our help against China.

Arrest him, there’s an ICC warrant out for him. Performative gestures don’t have any impact in an uncivil setting.

How you going to transport him from UN jurisdiction and get past American jurisdiction? No matter how fast they move, I can’t picture a scenario where the US doesn’t scramble fighters to force the plane down.

Right? It’s so frustrating that there’s no media outlet containing a clear list. It’s such an easy thing to do for journalists and they can’t be arsed to do the basics of their job. All I could find out so far is that UK and US stayed
