I just watched Sisu and Sisu Road to Revenge.

I enjoyed them for what they are, but the thing that stuck out to me the most was how incredibly expressive Jorma Tommila was in the very final scene of Road to Revenge.

A (basically) non-verbal action hero throughout both films, that end scene of the sequel was the only part that the actor got to show a vastly different range, and I thought he was incredible. Every change of expression let the viewer read his thoughts as he processed what was happening. Truly impressive acting.

The first one was so much fun. It is just bananas from start to finish.

Mike and Nick and Nick and Alice - I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. It’s a fun little comedy great for unwinding after work.

I saw American Pyscho tonight. Pretty big turnout, with some people even dressed as Bateman (a bit weird, considering they were Gen Z men, but hopefully they understood the point of the film). It definitely feels like a bit of a meme/cult classic film. There are a lot of memorable moments but it feels like it’s made it’s main point in the first 10 minutes and just sort of flounders around for 90 minutes until it hits an optimal run time and abruptly ends. Seeing it with other people definitely added to the experience, even though most seemed to know it well whereas it was my first time.

I saw the running man, which I swore up and down that I wouldn’t see because I’m so sick of remakes. But my best friend who is a big movie geek, swore up and down about how good it was. When looking for movies, I saw it and kept looking, but found nothing else, so I was like “alright, fuck it”. Omg I’m glad I did! It looked and sounded amazing on my TV. The story, the message, the action was all top notch, and my kid absolutely loved it as well. Maybe a LITTLE inappropriate for an 11 year old but the violence wasn’t really any worse than marvel movies, and I’m not naive enough to think he hasn’t heard swear words before. The concept of a corporation being more powerful or equal to the government is something he’s going to learn sooner or later. And that ratings/money/power are more important than any amount of lives is a powerful thing to understand early on.

He’s a smart kid and watched it as a movie and I didn’t hammer the message or anything but we discussed it afterwards and I think he got it pretty well. I highly recommend this movie and will actually be buying it to support the art/message. Absolutely great movie.

I love that you do this! Do you often watch movies together? My friends have a young kid, they recently replaced their TV with a projector and now their main screen time with him is a weekly movie on a Friday night as a family. Very cosy vibes.

Yup! We do family movie night on Saturdays. We always talk about it after. Though it’s usually more like “what was your favorite part?” But with heavier movies it gets to be more of like “did you get it? Do you have any questions?” Like saving private Ryan, it took several pauses because he was asking questions along the way. I think this weekend it’ll be a lot of questions as well since we’re watching terrifier. Lol /j

I Saw The TV Glow - 10/10 would recommend

The Foreigner - 8/10 solid film, Jackie Chan was right to do this movie. I also love the layers of the plot… mostly

Mr. Nice Guy - 9/10 I did not remember that I had watched this movie until the last 15 minutes. Top tier Jackie Chan movie, holds up really well

Tommy 1/5 - It’s not at all clear how much of this is metaphor and literal. It’s wild that Tina Turner plays a literal sexual iron maiden but none of the huge swings seem to be in the same direction

The Bride 3/5 - Eh, I don’t know what caused all the Frankenstein stuff to be in the zeitgeist but this is pretty middling

Ready or Not 4/5 - Good horror with a competent female lead. Great ending too

Palm Springs 4.5/5 - Something about Groundhog Daying is just so compelling and this is one of the best versions of it. Interesting characters, a little philosophy, some good hyjinks, I’d highly recommend this

The Napa Boys 4/5 - This is an indie from a group of LA comedians and honestly it’s a little unapproachable. It’s parodying so many things simultaneously it gets hard to know who and what are the butts of the jokes. Still, I was laughing the whole time with 3 other people in my tiny theater and I mostly got the jokes

How to Make a Killing 2.5/5 - Hahahaha, fuck the rich… except the shittiest one who wins the whole thing? I don’t really understand what the message of this was supposed to be and frankly it didn’t make a ton of sense. I can’t decide if I like Glenn or not

Project Hail Mary 4.5/5 - Excellent, go see it on a huge screen. Andy Weir writes books to be made into movies and it works here. The movie is more emotional and less sciencey than both the novel and The Martian but it works

The Sting 4.5/5 - Pretty cleanly establishes the template for the grift. Robert Redford and Paul Newman’s beautiful eyes are the stars of this and it’s hard not to fall in love with those sleazeballs
