Can’t stand him anymore, but his delivery has always been good imho.

But he just doesn’t get it. He thinks slinging shit at “sacred cows” as actual literal fascists are forming ranks is somehow fair play. Like, it’s not illegal, but you should know that some people are taking real sides in this, and to them jokes are more ammunition in their culture war.

In a better world I’d agree to sling away, but I think because of his privilege he doesn’t see how tenuous the situation is (I didn’t either back in the day).

Any time anyone mentions Ricky gervais this picture should be posted. Thank you for performing the service.

All should know the deep cringe.

He is the kind that slowly becomes more and more conservative and less and less funny and then cries about how he got cancelled on a talk show.

He has always been a FAR better writer than a performer.

And he was only such a good writer because he was in the room with Stephen Merchant who is better than Gervais in basically every way.

But thats just it and what most professional comedians are talking about. They dont want you to be genuinely offended or upset, but if you go to a comedy show or watch a 60 minute special. You laugh at 55 minutes but get offended at the 5 that are about a topic YOU are sensitive about, that 5 minutes wasnt all of a sudden serious statements meant to be taken seriously. It was all jokes. They dont owe anyone an apology because that person didnt like parts of their work. They KNOW that not everything is going to land for everyone. If 90% of the audience are laughing, you are killing it.

        Keyword: professional.

These last few years have seen old comedians finding it hard to update their style. They’re the ones hyperfocusing on people not finding their jokes funny, at this point. I defended Dave Chappelle at first, but it seems his standup has become the feel sorry for me hour.

I think Ricky Gervais especially exaggerates how offensive his material is just to have something to talk about. Carlin is a prime example of bitchy old man humor done right. But that’s just my opinion.

I think Ricky has a problem in that some people go to his shows expecting a sterility of humor you find on tv and get proper standup. You almost never hear outrage about Jeselnik because his entire repertoire is “I’m saying the wildest shit I can think of and thats what you’re here for”

I have mixed feelings about Dave Chappelle because I genuinely believe in inclusivity which unfortunately includes having jokes made about you (which some communities do not appreciate) but he just did too much and it crossed a line into feeling like bullying behavior so I dont fuck with him at all anymore.

When is the last time he updated his material? He’s out here still spewing that new-atheist line like his mind is powered by Reddit circa 2013.

Ricky is his persona. A dim man, in a fortunate position, over his head. He’s a stuffy old “ya dad” medium-level bigot like Archie Bunker; he’s only able to get a laugh by being the joke.

I once saw a podcast or something that had Ricky, Dave Chappelle, Jerry Seinfeld, and Louie CK. Now Ricky wasn’t the only shit-head at that table, but he did stand out sharply when back-lit by all that talent.

I also watched that discussion and agree that he belonged there even less than Seinfeld, who is very rarely funny, but is at least tolerable on a conversational level.

That’s not fair, comparing Gervais to someone with actual talent is just mean.

I love a lot of his work, but he is insufferable. Its like he never got all of his edge lordiness out of his system when he was a teen, and now he is doubling down.

He’s good enough as a writer when paired with Stephen Merchant, who presumably balances the edgelord side out. When left to his own devices, however…

Can’t say I ever watched his comedy, and only know him from his award show comedy roasts of the audience which were funny, but overall not my type of comedian. What did he do?

Yeah used to be a big fan of his too - Animals, Politics, Extras etc… then he did a Netflix special going on about how you can’t make jokes about anything anymore and ripping on trans people just to get people to react and I was out. IDK what it is with Netflix specials and these comedians complaining about being cancelled despite the fact they’re saying it on the most popular streaming platform in the world and they decide that some lame jokes about trans people is the best way to demonstrate their argument. Fucking weak.
