Fuck Cars•Tesla Full-Self Driving Veers Off Road, Hits Tree, and Flips Car for No Obvious Reason (No Serious Injuries, but Scary)English

Now here’s a fun experiment: start from the beginning, and pause as soon as you think the car is about to do something dangerous. That’s your correction time - I was probably front wheels off the road before I paused.

Fuck Cars•Here Is Everything That Has Changed Since Congestion Pricing Started in New YorkEnglish
1·11 months agoExcept for “visitors to the zone”, they literally only measured the things that could be positive. There was no world where congestion pricing was going to increase number of cars. Actually yellow taxis are up, which they portrayed as “green” but I think most people would argue is actually “red” - i.e. we want to lower the number of taxis (and rideshare).
The controversial questions: restaurants/businesses, effect on low-income commuters, are all in the “Too soon to say” category. They’re not even measuring the all-encompassing commute-time question which is “average commute time for all commuters”, not “average commute time for X category”. It’s entirely possible that commute times for both cars and transit could go down while the commute time for an average person goes up because more people are being pushed to longer-time commutes.

Fuck Cars•Paris pollution after they added bike lanes and restricted carsEnglish
151·11 months agoKeep seeing this picture but no control group. Give me the same data for a French city other than Paris to understand whether this is about local policy change or about emissions standards and the move to electric cars.
Tell that to Galileo. Tell it to your kids the way the US is going with the Department of Education being removed.
No, it’s a phrase meant to demonstrate that “no politics” is a rule only usable by people whose existence isn’t political. Straight white men existing is not political, but when women’s rights, immigrants rights, LGBT rights are all under attack by the right wing, suddenly their existence is “political” because their right to exist is actively under attack by the current regime.

News•Only one House Democrat votes for Republican bill to avoid a government shutdown
21·1 year agoGod this is such a tired and lazy narrative. We just got out of one of the most effective administrations the world has seen and you’re still pulling this bullshit. Biden managed to steer us out of a global pandemic and avoid a recession everyone was actively rooting for while managing inflation to lower rates than any other nation globally. Without legislative control, he managed to pass two major domestic investments including one investing billionsin high tech manufacturing. He canceled billions in student loan debt, had the strongest FTC we’ve seen in decades that started up antitrust for the first time in a century, and effectively halted a geopolitical enemy without losing a single American soldier. You want to call that all symbolic? Democrats are the definition of “if you do things right, they’ll think you’ve done nothing at all” and we’re currently seeing all the things they’ve done disappear in front of our eyes.

305·1 year agoIt’s easy clickbait to get mad at Democrats for failing to be sufficiently symbolic.
If you’re on Proton to be privacy-oriented and stop governments or corporations from accessing your data, do you really trust the company when their CEO is cozying up to an authoritarian regime? I just don’t see Proton fighting any information requests from Trump right now, and just from a utilitarian perspective that makes them a bad choice for me as a user.
Their Swiss CEO decided that supporting an authoritarian American neo nazi regime was a good idea

Technology•Reddit Blames Google Algorithm Changes For Not Hitting User Growth.English
15·1 year agoI mean that is why the new reddit page is so less information dense and image-heavy. The app also implemented swiping to get you to mindlessly scroll through memes, often into algorithm-recommended subs you’re not even subscribed to. It’s all an attempt to move the average content toward low-barrier slop thats easy to consume and pad their engagement numbers.

There’s two problems with quantum computing:
They are fundamentally analog machines. Digital computers have huge error bars, its basically impossible for a transistor to bit flip naturally. A small change in voltage does not change the represented value. This is untrue of quantum machines, where a small fluctuation in the qubit’s underlying state actually causes a change to the represented value.
We have already done tons of research into what we can do with quantum computers. Theoretical quantum computer science is a well researched field. Basically the only thing we’ve gotten out of it is Shor’s algorithm. Its honestly just not that useful even if we had high breakthroughs in the engineering.
