The Japanese leaders literally were not fully convinced about surrendering after the first nuclear bomb.
Millions more could have died in a long drawn out end. It also told the Soviets not to fuck with the US after the war.
There was kind of a conflict in between…
Plus the firebombing of Tokyo with 105k deaths
Plus all the other morale bombing we did. The exact figures aren’t even known, but it was upwards of 350k civilians murdered by the United States in Japan during WW2.
Don’t forget the additional 100k dead from the firebombing of Tokyo.
