  • I used to pay less than the single plan for a family plan, split between 5 people. Back when ad-free YouTube was an afterthought and my primary reason for using it was Google Play Music’s unlimited music storage and streaming.

The amount they just increased the cost of YouTube is about how much I’d be willing to pay total for no ads. Until then, they’re competing against zero ads (but no casting) for free.

  • It still makes perfect sense, imo. I wouldn’t even call it incorrect on a technical level. The contrast between “man” as singular and “mankind” as collective should provide all of the context needed.

If I describe a scene of a story as “man goes to work,” no one assumes I’m talking about the collective of humanity.

  • Right, but we look at examples like Chromium and we can see where there is still so much potential for things to go sideways. GabeN and his yacht could sink to the bottom of the sea and his estate sells control of Valve to someone less benevolent.

A commercial entity that has enough control over a project pushes the direction of that project in their favor. And sure you can fork a FOSS project at any time, but once the commercialized version has enough saturation, user inertia and lack of experienced developers to take that initiative often prevents alternatives from achieving success.

  • Just the light contrast. Stars are not as bright as the light from the sun reflecting off the Earth and the Moon. If they adjusted the exposure enough to see the stars, the Earth and Moon would look blindingly bright in comparison.

It truly needs to be very dark for stars to be easily visible, to the extent that the mere lights from a nearby city shining through the atmosphere are enough to render them invisible on a clear night.

  • In a general sense, absolutely, but there are still a good number of pro-AI communities around here that typically keep to their own bubbles. Anyone browsing by All will inevitably see them come up here and there.

I also see AI-gen content make it to the top of larger, more general communities like Lemmy Shitpost every now and then. Usually when it’s harder to tell that it was generated by AI. When it gets called out, you’ll typically see more upvotes than downvotes, but there will inevitably be some AI sympathist or two in the replies who won’t hesitate to go off about how it’s not a big deal/it’s just a meme/there’s nothing inherently wrong with AI/etc.
