Liquipedia:Notability Guidelines

From Liquipedia Chess Wiki

Please note that inclusion of pages in mainspace is ultimately up to the discretion of the Liquipedia administrators.

Sadly, not everything can or should be added to the wiki. We want all our pages to be as up-to-date as possible and to meet our quality standards. Additionally, we strive to have all pages meet a certain level of notability to current fans of the game or those wanting to research its history. As such, some pages will be rejected due to a lack of quality or relevance. Any pages that do not meet these guidelines will NOT be deleted, but will be moved to userspace.

If you have any questions regarding these guidelines, please join our Discord and leave a message in the #chess channel.

Guidelines

[edit]
Updated on February 1st 2025, Team/Person/Tournament pages that were already created prior this date will not be affected.

Players

[edit]

Players may receive their individual pages as long as they surpass a certain threshold of notability. If your chosen player fits AT LEAST ONE of the bullet points shown below, then they are likely notable to warrant a page on this wiki.

  • At least reaching 2700 ELO rated once on the FIDE's official website
    • These ELO limit can be increased or decreased over time
  • Competes in either the World Championship match or a Candidates Tournament
  • Was notably known prior to the creation of FIDE in 1924

Exceptions can be made if a player has achieved an outstanding record/feat in the past (e.g. Youngest player to reach Grandmaster)

For players with non-romanized aliases (Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, etc) please make sure to create their page with the romanized version of their alias. In the case of their personal names, the player infobox supports both a romanized and non-romanized version.

Tournaments

[edit]

Notability

[edit]

Tournaments can always be created if the event meets certain criteria and is also up to the editors/administrators' discretion. The following set conditions shall be adhered to when creating tournament pages:

The following tournaments can be considered immediately notable:

The following criteria are considered if a tournament is not considered immediately notable:

  • National championship status
  • The quality and quantity of publicly available information (see Core details)
  • The importance of the event to the specific region/community

Core details

[edit]

For a tournament to be covered thoroughly, the following details should ALL be provided (may be represented by a Tournament Rulebook/Handbook):

Tournaments that are considered immediately notable may not required all of the following datas such as Logo or Prize Pool
(e.g. Very old tournaments)

  • The full name of the tournament
  • The tournament logo, as a high resolution transparent .png file or a vector file
Note: Either one version suitable for both light and dark backgrounds, or a separate version for each
Note: If there isn't one, a logo of the federation this event is under can be used
  • The start and end dates of the tournament
  • The total prizing
    • Ideally with a complete prizing distribution
  • Any social media accounts
  • The commentators of the event (at least the main broadcast language)
  • The tournament format (stages, seeding process, time control etc.)
  • A list of participants
    • Ideally all entries
    • Ideally with participant nationality
  • The date, time, and timezone of each round of matches
  • Full move data for completed games

Additional details describing how the event will be conducted may also contribute positively to a page's notability.

Note: Not all matches of a specific tournament is required to be covered (e.g. excessively high number of matches)

Event Removal

[edit]

Liquipedia admins reserve the right to remove any tournament without any explanations at any Stage of an event. Additionally, Liquipedia admins can deny the coverage of any tournament ahead of its start, should tournament organizers/chess federations approach editors with the intent to get their event added to the wiki.

User Pages

[edit]

Completely optional, but make your userpage a good indication of who you are! You can also store various templates or any useful information within your userpage.

Pages that do not meet the notability guidelines will not be deleted, but it will be moved to the original page contributor (page creator)'s userspace instead. Contributors can continue to work on those pages at any time. Once those pages achieve the notability standard, it will then be moved back to the wiki mainspace.
