I will take a different route here and remind everyone that the natives who did steal a limited number of guns, were fierce fighters who punched way above their weight before being disarmed by overwhelming odds. For their limited numbers and lack of training in firearms, lack of ammunition and support, they killed a LOT of settlers and soldiers, with and without guns. I’ll add delusional kids who think they’re progressive or better than reddit but are actually just the same liberals incels and chuds but with different wallpaper.

This website/network is even more isolated and cut-off from the wider world so you see a lot more people who have absolutely no idea how the world works and what it means to live, to have values, to contribute and have real community. The tone of isolationism and xenophobia of people with even slightly different attitudes reminds me a lot of when I made burner accounts on /r/conservative and /r/theredpill.

And I don’t mean that from a “both sides are the same” way. I am pretty deep left, but there are a lot of people here who are seriously bigoted and contentious with anyone who doesn’t push all the “perfect performative leftist” buttons on any idea, and somehow think they’re superior despite being alone, asocial, anti-work, anti-money, anti-establishment in every way, against voting, against political action that isn’t tankie roleplay, against community that isn’t discord echo-chambers.

Very few people will care about that.

What will get Lemmy burned to the ground and everyone hauled off to camps are all the tankies roleplaying that the Great Revolution will begin any day now and all the open threats of violence against political figures. People don’t even TRY to be safe, they seem to want their door kicked down and I can’t comprehend how sheltered and naive so many people must be to think this is fine and safe.

It’s amazing how many progressive children you can sway by just saying “America bad” and you can get them to swallow any propaganda as long as some part of it tangentially lines up with something they feel. And these are the people who think they’re better than MAGA.

I love when you call them out you get pathetic downvotes like it matters on Lemmy. No arguments, no actual engagement, just a big frowny angry face and smack that arrow like it means something. Because they know they’re wrong and silly and too asocial to even argue for the roleplay world they want to live in.

I would also add that somewhere between 21% - 25% of the American population is functionally illiterate. This means that people can read short messages, texts and headlines if they focus, but are basically incapable of comprehending and internalizing written material more abstract or complicated than a meme or tweet.

The far-right MAGA conservatives who are ride-or-die with Trump no matter what happens also seem to line up pretty close to this percentage. I don’t think anyone has done a direct study of a connection or even correlation, but I would put money on the bet that the Venn diagram is a perfect circle.

You can’t shoot misinformation, but if they ever decide you commenting on Lemmy is evidence of being part of a terrorist cell (and they might) you will only benefit from enough of us declaring we have our shotguns pointed at the front door. (Misinformation isn’t going to break down your door, it will be people in masks.)

Time to get a lot harder and less cynical about protecting yourselves and your communities.

There is a highly performative and cynical segment of the left who occupy large parts of Lemmy and I love that this post is getting the amount of pushback that it is.

We are NOT in the same timeline we were a few years ago, the world is changing rapidly, and we need to change with it to survive.

Nobody seems to care about the MILLION PEOPLE who died in the first two months after cutting off USaid, I don’t really expect our species to care about anything anymore.

I will still fight for a better future and good outcomes, but I’ve seen just how dark and selfish our world is, and has always been, and I have no choice but to swallow the despair that we’re further from some kind of Star Trek utopia as we are from the extinction of the dinosaurs.
