Linux@lemmy.ml•France Launches Government Linux Desktop Plan as Windows Exit Begins
3·24 hours agoWhat is “The Year of the Linux Desktop” exactly? How do we measure this exactly and what does that even mean? (I use that phrase for memes usually.)

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Firefox 149 vs. Chrome 147 Web Browser Performance On Linux
11·1 day agoDisappointing, but not surprising. The performance of the browser is not an issue on my side. These are just synthetic benchmarks, so not very interesting to me. I wonder if one can “feel” (not just measure) the difference of performance when using both browsers. I don’t use Chrome and probably never will, so cannot compare.

Linux@programming.dev•Valve Developer Improves The Linux Gaming Experience For Limited vRAM Hardware
1·2 days agoDoes Intel even have the same issue? Maybe this is an issue with AMD only. Wish they had been more explicit about the other brands and drivers.

Linux@programming.dev•Valve Developer Improves The Linux Gaming Experience For Limited vRAM Hardware
3·2 days agoRADV is a driver for AMD cards. The linked blog post https://pixelcluster.github.io/VRAM-Mgmt-fixed/ title is “Fixing AMDGPU’s VRAM management for low-end GPUs” and the word
nvidiadoes not appear once in it. Unless I am misunderstanding this, it looks like AMD only. If anyone has direct confirmation that this works on Nvidia too (proprietary or open source drivers), I will update my previous replies to reflect that.

Linux@programming.dev•Valve Developer Improves The Linux Gaming Experience For Limited vRAM Hardware
6·2 days agoIt was the right choice to switch to AMD. But the future of Nvidia Open Source seems not that bad, as they are improving in that front too.

2·3 days agoThank you for looking into, appreciate the help. I wanted to read the article later to figure out the details. I think a custom Kernel goes a bit too far for my taste, so will then wait until its officially integrated.

1·3 days agoI want to highlight a few mods (because this question will come up eventually :-) ):
Alex Kidd in Miracle World_
- Snappy Snorg and the Seven Silver Stones: Total conversion with different graphics and gameplay, including puzzles. High quality.
- Octo Unleashed: Impressive conversion with good graphics and atmosphere.
- Stella in Adventure World: A more traditional style of gameplay with new character, story and level designs.
- Voyage - A Sorceress Vacation: Total conversion with new gameplay, character, graphics and story.
Sonic_
- Boxguy Adventure 2: Part of a multiplatform series. Play as a new character within its own levels structures.
- NC Revision: Keeps main game intact, but updates graphics to very beautiful style. Other improvements in gameplay and miscellaneous alterations are made as well.
Sonic 2_
- Frenzy: 7 zones with secrets and alternate paths, making up to 21 levels. Further some changes to graphics and musics as well.
- Zen Island: Main game stays intact, but with changes to graphics palette, music and and a little bit on gameplay.
Phantasy Star_
- Makeover: Redesigns graphics (including Character Sprites Improvement hack) inspired by graphics from PlayStation 2 Phantasy Star Generation 1.
- Easy Patches (Double Meseta and XP): Collection of patches to reduce the grind. Simply double the money and xp earned from battles.
Super Boy 4_
(Note, Super Boy 4 is an unlicensed game in Korea that is a bad knock-off clone of Super Mario games. It has this uncanny effect of Mario games, but just in bad and wrong.)
- Individuality Improvement: Changes the graphics to something new and unique, getting rid of or the Super Mario aesthetics. Or makes changes so it looks a bit more unique than before.
Wonder Boy 5 Monster World (E)_
- Sram Pad Enhancement Hack: Adds a save function so you don’t need to use passwords (or save states). Coloring are also adjusted, as the original colors can be ugly.

1·3 days agoI wouldn’t mind if it works perfectly fine through Proton to be honest. But anything that requires and locks to Windows only is bad for gamers, developers and the future of human race.

1·3 days agoI don’t think sbox should fail if it does not support Linux. But if it ends up locking games and the developers behind Windows, then I don’t want it to become popular.

Games@lemmy.world•Forza Horizon 6's Japan map is the series' best yetEnglish
1·3 days agoI’m not really indepth familiar with the series. But if every new entry feels like a simple DLC, then I can understand why people get upset. While I do not expect a revolution with every new entry, they should be distinct in some ways. At least after multiple entries. The engine improves, new console generations and new developers.
What I expect is, same engine and developers from Horizon 5, but with new setting. As someone who never got into the series before, this is actually exactly what I want!

Games@lemmy.world•Forza Horizon 6's Japan map is the series' best yetEnglish
4·3 days agoWhat you describe is not unique to this game. Would you pay for this if it was a DLC to Forza 5? I see it as “more content”, but with a new game engine and setting. I don’t think that every new entry of a game in a series needs to revolutionize. I am okay with a new style or setting, with slight improvements and lots of new content. That’s what a new entry in a series should be (at least for racing games). As long as it is not like the yearly sports game updates FIFA in example.
And it’s alright to talk about stuff you want to, to get it out of your chest. This is a forum and a perfectly valid place (so a game review would be too). It’s good to see what other people are bothered with, because it could be a reason not get into in example. I never played Horizon game before, so cannot judge how it feels for you. For me, this is the first time I’m really really interested into the game series, as I (and many others) love the Japan setting.

1·3 days agoDisappointing to read that. But I think its a little bit too early to make a definitive mind yet. At least this is Open Source, so people want to make it work on Linux. Sadly even without Linux support I do not think it would flop (I know you wish to lol). It would be sad if Garry’s Mod does not work on Steam Machine.

Games@lemmy.world•Does the engine a game uses factor into your decision to buy it or not?English
7·3 days agoWait, Balatro doesn’t have a “custom engine”. They use https://love2d.org/ . On itch.io you can even search games made with this engine: https://itch.io/games/made-with-love2d

I hope the downloaded collection will be uploaded to the Internet Archive. This would be a pretty cool preservation.
