The Entropy of Significance: The One Who Renounced (The Act of Erasure)

Everything that once had meaning now has no meaning at all. Everything that was a part of me now is a part of someone else. There is a thermodynamic shift in what is being retained now, where there has to be a critical level of importance for anything to remain still any longer. So much has gone, so much forgotten. Catharsis and dust. Everything is an act of forgetting and forgiving now.

I look at the faces but they mean nothing to me. I struggle even to see myself now. The letters EBM are a forgotten abbreviation. The green grass of the picture and the sunny reflected smiles are from meaningless people. I know it, because I drive past this place often. I never glance at it. I never even register it.

Everything I once inhabited has become cold, like a glacier has swept over it, obliterating everything. Complete erasure. Where there was something, now there is nothing. The absence of even absence itself.

Did they do me right? Did they do me wrong? Are the girls pretty? What were we even there for? Were the men funny? Was one of them brilliant? Was I brilliant? What does it all mean? What does anything mean, really. What store did we place into that future? What weight did we give to what we did and what we said? Did we think we were going to change anything? We couldn’t even change ourselves.

It means exactly nothing. The picture and the papers are sent into the shredder to be consumed into even less meaningful fragments. I will put them in a paper bag, tie the neck and use it to light a fire.

It was never cold with her around.

She could light fires easily. I cannot do it without help. She showed me how. Now I am without her and everything has reached a critical level of cold. There is life before her. There is life with her. And there is the unbearable existence without her that has rendered everything else immaterial. I cannot cook, I cannot keep this place straight, I cannot even light a fire. Nothing I can do will ever bring her back to me and I am so fucking lonely it kills me inside and from within.

Catharsis and dust. Black bags around me, filled with clothes, books, some jewellery, scents, handbags, and anything else that provides a line between the then and the now. Between the past and reality. I made a move. A positive move. Catharsis and dust.

I switch off the light and sit utterly motionless within the thickening silence. The absence presses around me. The darkness holds.

The air absorbs me.
