about

"Scorn" is not just a song; it's a timestamp. It’s a frozen moment from 2022, back when Andy Mazlan, a doctor in Kelantan during the height of Covid, found himself in a stifling room with nothing but his guitar, a cheap mic, and his spiraling thoughts. Alone and overworked, he recorded the demo that would later anchor our first release, Solitary Confinement Tapes (Demo). Back then, we were still called Smile—a name that in hindsight feels like a cruel inside joke, considering the music we were making.

But this isn’t that version. This is "Scorn" after being dragged through every corner of our collective misery. Each member left their fingerprints on it: Isra’s precise, almost defiant drum patterns; Aliff’s basslines that sound like they’re crawling out of the grave; Rauf’s violin, stretching the song’s sorrow into something vast and infinite. Fayyadh's guitar wrestles with Andy’s original riffs like it’s trying to break free of them. It’s the sound of all our frustrations colliding, coalescing, and somehow making sense.

Lyrically, "Scorn" is Andy at his bleakest. And yet, it’s all of us. If you’ve ever been forced to wear a mask to endure the unbearable monotony of existence, this song might feel like a mirror. A cruel one.

It’s not easy to admit that we hate society, especially when society hates us back. But "Scorn" isn’t about grand gestures or rebellion. It’s about resignation. About the weight of getting up every day when every fiber of your being screams not to. It’s a hymn for the restless, the disconnected, and the disenchanted.

We recorded this at ISeekStudio, where Mokhtar somehow tolerated our perfectionist tendencies and existential musings. The cover art, designed by fv, features a photograph of one of the minarets of Kuala Lumpur KTM Station—its starkness standing in haunting contrast to the city's restless activity, a symbol of something enduring yet indifferent.

"Scorn" will be featured in our upcoming debut album, where the rest of our burdens will be exorcised in roughly 40 minutes of sound. Until then, we hope this track serves as a reminder that even in our shared despair, we can still create something to cling to—if only to remind ourselves that we’re still here.

lyrics

SCORN

With scorn
I trudge through this life
I'm chained to the burden of existence
I'm numb to everything
I can't breathe

Death pummeling through my mind
I don't have a choice but to block out my thoughts
Of suicide
But life isn't exactly comforting
Forced to live and breathe
And carve the many masks I wear just to live and serve
In a society I hate

I'm chained to the burden of existence
I've nothing but scorn
