Well, the way things were for the first few years of 4kids’ Saturday morning blocks, I used to watch Kids WB on Saturday morning and Fox Box/4KidsTV on Sunday mornings, since the local WB had both Fox and WB networks’ blocks on different mornings, even going back to Fox Kids. But sometimes of course there were reruns or I had a vacation or a party to go to or I wanted to watch other shows or go to a garage sale with my dad… so even though there were many weeks when I would watch the whole blocks or at least all the premieres and my favorites, only certain shows I’d tape or go out of the way for.

sometimes I’d watch in rerun weekend morning slots or shows I didn’t like a recording from Saturday night SVES or Toonami or the Friday night graveyard slot anime on CN (cyborg 009, .hack//legend and twilight bracelet, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Gundam seed). Late night anime became more interesting as I got older of course, and of course it didn’t hurt that half the girls in my grade wanted to role play InuYasha during recess. Overall I became more intrigued by the psychological depth of characters like Tsukasa and Subaru in .hack//sign at first on toonami super Saturdays then at midnight on SVES, and the duality of the real and virtual worlds, and after you’ve seen a show like that, Kids WB content can either be a relaxing palette cleanser (SVES had shows like x-men evolution that hit even harder at 11 PM than 11 AM on Kids WB) or a step back (max steel and super friends were short lived early SVES shows)… over time I started to lose interest in watching stuff like Mucha Lucha and discovered shows like FLCL by experimenting with the VCR to catch a strange newly rebranded block with black text cards called adult swim.

The Menu for example was a teen celebrity gossip show that was on at 11 or 11:30 in the summers of 2004 and 2005 next to Shaman King. It’s filler content even 4kids purists don’t talk about, but I’d watch it if I was hanging out with friends in a hot Arizona summer with not much else to do but not something I necessarily had to see every week of the year and the schedulers probably knew as much since it was never really given a prime slot during the school year… as far as I can tell no one recorded the Menu and it is entirely lost media.

Pirate Islands was another show like that too which they seemed to get to try to have teen girls watch for Australian live action heartthrobs. It’s interesting to see the reactions on old IMDb listings for pirate islands. I remember liking it more than WMAC Masters. It was a weird and unfitting live action show like Ultraman Tiga, but in an entertaining way.

Shaman King was a show I liked a lot and watched pretty religiously, usually even the occasional reruns since it was only on once a week. In fall 2005 I moved and my new girlfriend was NOT impressed I knew that whole “Mew Mew Magic, Mew Mew Grace, Mew Mew Power, In Your Face” bit and thought it made me seem “metrosexual.” By the time you’re a teenager watching 4Kids programming becomes hard to do without a hint of irony and eventually I wanted to move past 4Kids shows when One Piece shifted to Funimation and most were celebrating. I remember Doremi seemed even more childish and the character designs are too off putting to me. I started to really fall off in interest in fall 2005, and was generally sort of depressed and uninterested in their new offerings. Bratz seemed mean and ugly. Sigma Six didn’t really do anything for me either, on the boys side of things. Sonic x wrapped up not long after and turtles skipped a solid season to get to the worst season…

By the time 4kidstv was airing, I was 12-15 years old, and I really didn’t like the direction it went with increasing censorship on One Piece, many shows being licensed and unfinished… f-zero gp legend I thought had potential as a good toonami show, but didn’t work on Fox Box or 4KidsTV. Overall I just got disappointed and while I did see a lot of the first season or two of Winx club, by the later years of 4kidstv I mostly ignored the block and only watched a few shows like Kirby or Turtles or Yugioh that were longtime comfort franchises for me. Or the random time they brought Ultimate Muscle back. I do still enjoy toyetic anime dubs especially Beyblade X, but I can’t be uncritical of the dated 4Kids style practices on Yu-Gi-Oh Go Rush. These types of localization do bother me, especially on stuff that came out in the 4KidsTV era and later when it didn’t even have the excuse of making a show big through pragmatic choices like early Pokemon and Yugioh on Kids WB.

To go back to EI shows in general they were usually aired at the start or end of the block as filler. Winx club it’s true is popular for EI. Like rescue heroes and cubix it found the loophole of having a toy line while providing lessons and still got away with a long running action cartoon slot. But generally I didn’t go out of my way to watch EI filler content like Archie’s weird mysteries or rescue heroes… for a while they even had rescue heroes at 3 PM on weekdays, but eventually EI stuff was usually consigned to early slots like Doremi and Winx or end of block like the Adrenaline Project.

Sorry for such a long post but it’s an interesting subject. I’ve written lots of stuff about this on Anime Superhero retrospective columns like our current Kids WB and Naruto retrospectives and I still write about Toonami and Disney XD anime schedules for the front page. So this is a subject I can talk a lot about and I’m glad to have someone showing an interest in shows I used to watch. How did you get into these shows? Did you grow up on them or find them online?

That makes sense. I know Winx was considered E/I as well. So was the fact Winx Club came out around the time Ultimate Muscle stopped the reason you didn't watch Winx much? Because I know Winx was one of the most pushed shows on the lineup and it had a tendency of airing twice during the lineup

That makes sense. I noticed you didn't mention Doremi. I'm guessing you also watched Mew Mew more than Doremi?

That makes a lot of sense. I understand. I agree with you on preferring Cardcaptors art style to Sailor Moon 90s series and I also prefer Mew Mews art style to Sailor Moon's as well. I was wondering, would you say Mew Mew Power was the one you watched the most regularly of the 4Kids' series that primarily aimed at girls?

I need to know, why did you watch Mew Mew back then, but not Sailor Moon? According to your MyAnimeList, your current Mew Mew watchthrough is a re-watch, while when you completed the first season of Sailor Moon, it wasn't a re-watch. Is there a reason why Mew Mew was the only magical girl anime you really watched back then?

Where is the Shonen Jump where they released the manga of karakuri?
