look on the bright side

I did this charcoal portrait in my sketchbook. I toned the paper with willow charcoal then drew with it, and an eraser. Trying to remind myself about shapes and light since my watercolour work concentrates on line and colour.

after John Singer Sargent

Tamara Karsavina in the role of Thamar
Henry James
Sir William Blake Richmond
Today I drew studies from Sargent's (my fave artist) book of Portraits. I was focusing on the strokes he used to block in large areas vs. when he used a single simple line. I didn't intend to slavishly copy them, just learn from them. Now I have a much better understanding of drawing eyes!
