How? I majored in Music Education and Computer Science, and minored in Psychology and Physics. I did that specifically because I thought Music, Physics, and Computer Science were all just math. I was correct about the first two. I would call CS linguistics, not math. The psych explains how the first two are math.
I got out of taking any languages classes in college because Computer Science classes (of which I took exactly one, Pascal) satisfied the requirement. It’s fucking rubbish to imagine learning a programming language is anything like learning a real human language. If there is any similarity at all, it’s like learning Esperanto.
If you were studying all that, don’t be majoring and double minoring, you aren’t a musician, no musician is smart enough for all that. You were a computer/science guy who was also good at music.
My brother is one of those bona-fide geniuses, and he was also a decent saxophonist in high school, but he wouldn’t have described himself as a musician. He also loves sports because it has lots of interesting statistics, but that doesn’t make him an athlete.

I actually have, many of them. It’s a joke, good musicians are insanely smart. They can be loose cannons though, that’s no secret.
I was quoting you. I am musically and artistically inclined. I wouldn’t call myself a musician, I’m just a proficient singer and can play at a performance level with almost every instrument. I’m also just a tech guy, not really a computer guy. Really I have spent the last 20 years making myself a jack of all trades and a master of a few.
I was mostly studying all that because I have ADD, and no one tried to stop me, lol. I keep doing it because books are free.
I suspect you’re better at math than you give yourself credit for. Most Americans that are “bad at math,” weren’t taught fractions properly and without that, none of the rest (Algebra, Trig, Calc, Number Theory, etc.) could possibly make any sense. Geometry is really the only mathematics that you can do without understanding fractions, and that makes sense since we were using Geometry to build buildings for millenia before anyone did a fraction to decimal conversion.
I understand “business math” very well, percentages, profit margins, etc., and use it every day. But not once in my entire life have I said “I really wish I’d paid more attention to Algebra.” If I’ve ever needed it, I didn’t recognize it, and have no idea how it would have solved my problem.
You mention that Algebra, etc. grows out of fractions, and I understand fractions, but have no idea how fractions fit. Another guy I knew told me that once you understand how Algebra relates to a circle, it all makes sense. WTF? I’ve never heard that before or since. Now you say its all about fractions with the same level of confidence. I don’t understand what either of you are talking about.
I think American students would be better served if the math curriculum emphasized Business Math, with advanced math like Algebra, Calc, Trig, etc., available for students on a engineering, aeronautics, aerospace, etc. track.
I just noticed during my TA work that when most students were having issues in the more advanced maths, that their fundamental issue was a misunderstanding of fractions and decimals. Once I got them to understand how those two relate to each other, they started understand the rest of the math. The fractions in algebra are generally an entire term in the equation. The other issue that kids had was getting them to stop thinking literally about distinct numbers, and getting them to think about the concept of numbers.
I think the other guy was saying that calculus makes the mathematics of curves a whole lot simpler than algebra does, but that’s a weird way to describe that.
Having flirted with the education system of the US and having two parents with degrees in education, I can honestly and wholeheartedly say that I have no clue how to fix how math is taught in this country, just that the way we do it seems fundamentally broken right around 4th to 5th grade.
Thanks, great clarification. I still don’t understand the application of algebra, but I’m sure it’s good for something. I don’t question it, because I don’t have knowledge about it. I know a lot of really arcane, obscure, super advanced musical stuff, but I understand why casual bystanders wouldn’t get it at all. The difference is, I wouldn’t expect middle schoolers to learn obscure musical knowledge that they’ll NEVER, EVER need.

That’s my mom. I’ve spent a lot of time lately explaining what click-bait articles are, and how they have very misleading headlines, and you can’t just read the headline and think you know the story.
We live in Florida, and I just showed her a headline that said that Disney was closing down the Hollywood Studios location, but they worded the headline without a “the” or “a”. - “Disney closes Hollywood Studios Location.” It sounds like Hollywood Studios is closing, a major development if true.
But when you read the article, it isn’t “the” Hollywood Studios location that was shut down, it was “a” Hollywood Studios location that was shut down, an old tribute to animation exhibit, which is due to be replaced with an updated one. So not the entire Hollywood Studios, as the headline implied, just a small section of it.
It wasn’t even a new story, the old location has been closed for years, and this replacement exhibit was announced a long time ago. So they ran a headline implying that an entire Disney theme Park was closing down, when they were just updating an exhibit, like they do every single day.
She’s always telling me about a major corporate chain that is closing, because she read a misleading headline about how they are closing 10 stores, without mentioning that they are also opening 100, so it sounds like the chain is out of business. Every time we pass a Cracker Barrel, she wonders out loud when they are finally going to close down after she read that click-bait headline 3 years ago. I’m tired of explaining that one, so I just say I don’t know, I hate them, so I hope it’s soon.

I think current measurements show expansion itself increasing, which means gravity is already too weak to decrease expansion and will continue getting weaker. There’s definitely open questions, but most current observations and models do not point toward the universe ever collapsing back to a single point.
I would think the expansion force more likely to be limited in that it would eventually subside and gravitational pull take over. I don’t have any associated education or knowledge but I guess it feels intuitive to me that the explosive forces from the big Bang would eventually subside to a point gravitational pull, which to my understanding isn’t limited by distance, would start bringing everything back together. Obviously oversimplified because I’m dumb but I’m saying this to pose the question, does what you stated conflict with that possibility?

This is all fringe science. It’s a new conjecture based on a controversial conjecture.
Hopefully someone who understands this better can provide a deeper explanation. I recall at high level why the original paper was not widely accepted.
The paper this is based on is not really hawking radiation because that requires an event horizon. They claimed gravity is enough which is extraordinary claim. Essentially redescribing something that can be more easily explained by other more widely accepted effects.

I still think we should destroy it. We basically have to options here:
Option 1 is certain death. With option 2 there’s at least some hope for a new beginning.
Of course we don’t have a way to destroy the universe yet but we have 10^78 years to figure it out. Once we have the means to start some chain reaction that rips space time itself and destroys the entire universe we should do it.
Option 1 is hope for a new beginning too depending on certain theories.
There’s a lot of fancy math involved that I don’t understand but the upshot is that mathematically a completely barren uniform universe and an infinitely dense point are technically identical and theoretically one could spontaniously become the other.
The key is arbitrarily large timescales. It doesn’t really matter how small the chance of spontaneous self-organisation of a state of maximum entropy is because the timescales involved are effectively infinite.
That’s the scary part. There is a infinitely small probability that the state of maximum entropy will spontaneously organize in anything, right? Even into the exact form of you sitting in front of a computer and reading this comment. So on a infinite time scale at some point you will just pop out of nothing and suffocate in a vacuum, basically teleported from this very moment into future.
But not really because the universe as we understand it today has some limits on what it can organize itself into, right? So in the end we can end up with just cold emptiness forever. (if I understand all this correctly)
Of course, if we can prove those theories and we will know our universe will eventually give birth to a new one we won’t have to destroy it. But if we prove that the future is just infinite emptiness I think we should.
