Out of the loop@lemmy.world•Why in Gods Green Earth is Trump getting rid of Powell and putting Warsh in place?
12·5 days agoPowell tried to do his job rather than be a yes-man. There were some incidents where the two made conflicting statements at press conferences, and Powell didn’t recant his statements.

History Memes@piefed.social•Jefferson gets glazed too often for being one of the worst of the Founding FathersEnglish
14·10 days agoI’m trying to remember what made Madison stand out as particularly shitty. He was a slaver, and considered indigenous peoples to be inherently inferior to Europeans. I have a faint memory of him being arrogant and paternalistic in some of the Federalist Papers. What am I forgetting?
I don’t have a comprehensive collection, unfortunately. If you Google around you can find partial collections on sites like this:
https://www.lambiek.net/artists/a/addams_charles.htm
I’m thinking of buying a book of his comics to share with my kids.
I woke up to a lovely rainstorm this morning and thought of this classic.

Climate@slrpnk.net•‘On a whole other level’: rapid snow melt-off in American west stuns scientists | Experts say brutal March heat has left critical snowpack at record-low levels – and key basins in uncharted territory8·19 days agoThe article focuses on the Rockies and Sierra Nevada. The situation is marginally better but still awful in the northwest. As of today in Washington state:
- Snowpack statewide is at 54% of normal, down 10% from last week. (“Normal” being the 30-year average for the calendar date)
- 115% statewide water year to date precipitation, up 2% from last week.
So slightly above-average precipitation this winter, but it was largely rain instead of snow. And the snow we do have is melting fast. The reservoirs are full, but their total volume is nothing in comparison to the snowpack.
Everyone I talk to is expecting a bad wildfire year and widespread water use restrictions.

6·20 days agoI think this is from a short-lived spinoff called Histeria. It was a fun show.
Fun fact: The disease is named for Lyme, Connecticut, USA. That’s where it was first identified as a unique condition.
It’s common enough in the northeast and north-central US that my public schools taught everyone basic prevention and symptoms as part of the regular curriculum.

History Memes@piefed.social•I love history in spite of my educationEnglish
4·1 month agoThe best history teachers I ever encountered were storytellers more than anything. Names and dates are meaningless if you can’t connect them with personalities, motivations, and all the social/political/ideological baggage that make humans do human things.
BTW, to echo something another user said to you a few days ago: thanks for recommending Orwell’s Homage to Catalonia. It’s my bedtime reading right now and I’m loving it.
Hell yeah! Bikes and happy kids are a great combination.
Also, front mounted toddler seats ftw. I loved our iBert when our kids were that size.

Bicycles@lemmy.ca•Fork width tire width compatibility question
13·2 months ago115 is an odd fork width. I think you mean the fork is spec’d to fit a 15x110mm “Boost” hub? And the hub on your front wheel is 15x100mm.
If that’s the case, you can definitely adapt the hub to fit the fork. You need two axle spacers, a 15x110mm axle, and a spacer to shift the brake disc into the correct position. Problem Solvers actually sells the spacers in a kit…
For 6-bolt brake discs: https://problemsolversbike.com/products/booster-front-hub-spacing-kit-6-bolt
For center lock brake discs: https://problemsolversbike.com/products/booster-hub-spacing-kit-center-lock-front
The real question is: where tf did you get a free Flight Attendant fork?!
Edit: if you really want to go down the rabbit hole and design your own spacers, SRAM publishes everything you need in their frame fit specifications:
https://www.sram.com/globalassets/document-hierarchy/frame-fit-specifications/road/2024-road-frame-fit-specifications.pdf
And I say heeeyyy-yey-yey-yey-yey!

History Memes@piefed.social•Ibn Khaldun spittin' straight facts tho
16·2 months agoEven when I have tried to put myself in a creationist’s shoes, creationism never made sense to me. Why limit God’s creative scope to a one-and-done event? Certainly it’s conceivable that He might produce complex, dynamic systems that are difficult for us to model, let alone understand. And He might have made design decisions for reasons that are not obvious to our limited intellects. I feel like a religious person would be doing honor to their God by doing science, exploring and learning, and taking the time to be awestruck at the things they discover.

Thanks for posting these. Graham Annable is a gem.
Burrowing owl: They what?

Too many times I’ve been out of the house with the kids and had people say things like, “You’re on Mom duty today, eh? Ha ha.” It’s frustrating that so many people have such low expectations for dads.

Middle picture brought back memories of Internet days of yore.
