Persona 5 Royal is a JRPG in the Persona series developed by Atlus and published by Sega. It is a port of the 2019 PlayStation 4 game of the same name, which itself is an enhanced re-release of the 2016 game Persona 5. Development of the 2022 release was handled by a team at Sega.[1]

The game was released on October 21, 2022 on the Microsoft Store and Steam, following an announcement during the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase in June 2022.[2] This version includes the majority of the downloadable content that was included in the original PlayStation 4 release[3] and has support for frame rates up to 120 FPS and 4K displays.

Persona 5 Royal received overwhelming praise from critics upon release, with the only notable sore point with the PC version being the limited set of graphics options on offer.[4]

Issues fixed

Game won't progress to main menu if you have a non-ASCII character in your Windows profile

Enable Unicode UTF-8 for worldwide language support.[14]
  1. Go to Control Panel.
  2. Click on "Change date, time, or number formats".
  3. Switch to the "Administrative" tab.
  4. Click on "Change system locale...".
  5. Check "Beta: Use Unicode UTF-8 for worldwide language support".
  6. Press OK and allow Windows to restart your system.

Game crashes when trying to save system data when run using Proton

Fixed since Proton 7.0-6 or GE-Proton7-38 and newer.
Running the game in a Linux environment using a version of Proton older than the above may leave the game unable to create the initial system data on first launch, leading to crashing and rendering the game unable to be played.[15]
This issue does not occur on Steam Deck.
Open Steam with the -steamdeck flag.[16]
Use GE-Proton7-38 or later which fixes the save file issue.[17]
  1. Download GE-Proton7-38 or later.
  2. Extract to <Steam-folder>/compatibilitytools.d/.
  3. Exit and restart Steam if already running.
  4. Right click on Persona 5 Royal in your Steam library and choose Properties.
  5. Choose Compatibility and select Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
  6. From the dropdown, select the version of GE-Proton that you downloaded in Step 1.
  7. Run the game and saving should now work.
Alternatively, you can use ProtonUp-Qt to download and install the latest version of GE-Proton. Then follow the above steps starting from Step 3.

Shadow quality resets to Medium after every loading screen

Whenever the player goes through a loading screen or battle transition, the shadow quality will reset to Medium. It will still show up as whatever was set up before in the graphics settings screen; however, the in-game shadows will behave as if the Medium setting was chosen.
(Temporary) Change the Shadow Quality setting to anything and then back to the desired quality after any loading screen/battle transition.[18]
(Permanent) Install the Fix Shadow Settings mod to fix the shadow settings.
  1. Follow the instructions outlined here to install the Reloaded tool.
  2. Install the Fix Shadow Settings mod (it may be available to install directly from Reloaded as well).
  3. Run the game through Reloaded tool.

Notes

This requires launching the game through the Reloaded tool every time.
