As explained in my original edit notes for Syberia - Remastered (see https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/w/index.php?title=Syberia_-_Remastered&oldid=1641410), the reason I set up the date this way was to avoid the wiki from incorrectly putting the date as January 1, 2025, as that is Semantic MediaWiki's default for its date function, and making it seem if looking via the wiki's backend that the game has released. The note is there for end-users so they know it's a placeholder date

Nulling it undoes all this and means it shows up incorrectly in the backend.

Plok (talkcontribs)

1. Because that's how it is on the rest of the site.

2. Because a fake date is a fake date. A lot of "December 31st" dates for old games got accepted as real on the Internet over the years because GameSpot, GiantBomb and the like had databases that couldn't accept missing months and days and nobody gave enough of a shit to check back.

The infobox should take priority, not dates in derived tables.

About Czech localizations

9
41444-seznam.cz1 (talkcontribs)

Hi. Last year I was warned not to create new pages with missing games on PCGW if I am not willing to provide more than the most basic information. And now I see that you are deleting links (mostly to xzone.cz) or information in which digital stores the Czech localization is or is not included. So I don't understand this. So now I'm providing unnecessarily too much information and users should individually search for information about the localization (distributor, covers,...) on archive.org, google or search digital stores? Links marked with one number don't take up space and dozens of them can fit on a line...

Plok (talkcontribs)

xzone is just a store. It is not relevant to anything regarding those localizations - you don't see anyone posting links to eBay listings for French and German localizations, for example.

Links with mere numbers are potentially confusing and do not communicate what they are even for.

41444-seznam.cz1 (talkcontribs)

Link to the store is relevant because it often shows the distributor who localized the game for the Czech market (and these are decades old games, so the information is gradually getting lost - ~1995-2010). And it's a verifiable source and no one can accuse me of inventing it and canceling edits (it happened - constantly correcting my true information with false at El Matador). The comparison with the French or German market is a bit lame = piracy was noticeably higher in the eastern countries, plus if I look at Wikipedia the number of L1+L2 speakers is 310 vs 175 vs 12 million (I'm referring to the gradual loss of information). Yes the links marked only with number may be confusing for non-Czech users, but the Czech language box is not for them. I understand content moderation, but I don't understand why you all moderate languages you don't know. Then it ends up like The Settlers: Rise of an Empire, for example, which is confusing for everyone - and it's not even labeled with just a number! :) . I didn't get an answer why you delete the note in which stores the Czech localization is included and in which ones it is not (but I don't think there's anything rational to say). And I don't need to point out, for example, that new updates can add languages to the game, but also quietly remove them forever. And for example, there was a request for the source of the translation https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/w/index.php?title=Grand_Theft_Auto_V&diff=1262787&oldid=1259426 and so after two years, I put him on there

41444-seznam.cz1 (talkcontribs)

One more thing. Only the most successful games have sold tens of thousands of copies on the Czech market. It is to be expected that unknown games sold hundreds of copies. Games can't be bought in stores for years (they never were in digital stores) often not even in bazaars, and the last time a warez version was available was 20 years ago on rapidshare.com = when we're talking about such a rare item, it won't be so easy to prove that the localization really existed. I would have one recommendation for all editors (instead of removing sources and adding dots). According to my data backup, there should be 531 links on PCGW to the 4 months no longer existing “prekladyher.eu” (fan translations, the vast majority of links were added by me last year), so finding new links would be appreciated by more than one person. I'm sure. No offense

Plok (talkcontribs)

This is all completely irrelevant for the context of this site. If it's official, it's official. If it's a fan-made translation, it needs to be noted.

41444-seznam.cz1 (talkcontribs)

"If it's official, it's official" = no needs to be noted. That must be an unwritten rule, because I can't find it anywhere. But it's good to know that from a certain point on, a person can write at will and no one will check it - either they don't know how (or if they didn't just confuse “store” with "source of information" and delete them), they write their impressions (see Settlers - correct "confusing" version “Retail only - 1” has been "corrected" to the nonsense of “Retail only; download for digital releases.” = even the source given was not understood). We already know the fictional localizations, and if I hadn't added the note, it would have been there until the end of time. Sir, unlike me, you haven't made a single valid argument (so far?) https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/w/index.php?title=Crash_Time_2&diff=1379505&oldid=1379502

Aemony (talkcontribs)

I'm not sure I follow the conversation exactly, but if an official localization is only available in a specific version or distribution of the game (an actual legal one, that is), it can and preferably should be noted as per the Editing Guide:

> Notes - Extra information relating to the particular language (available only in region-specific versions, unique quirks and issues, etc).

If there's a reference supporting that claim, then feel free to add that reference (as long as it's in the "Ref" parameter due to technical issues -- see the Editing Guide). To add additional context to the reference, use the {{Refurl}} template which allows you to include a text snippet from the webpage in question (which could e.g. be an English translated text from the page).

41444-seznam.cz1 (talkcontribs)

Below are samples full of "irrelevant" content that I didn't write. It might be worth doing something about it. There's even a link to a “pirate” server 3DM. Which is a strange setup on PCGW, it is impossible to insert a link to my----abandonware.com (it contains games/fixes/cracks/guides/translations/localizations) and yet inserting a link to archive.org is no problem (...+ really pirated content)

https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Barrow_Hill:_Curse_of_the_Ancient_Circle https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Warhammer_40,000:_Dawn_of_War_II https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Duke_Nukem:_Manhattan_Project https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Colin_McRae_Rally_3

Aemony (talkcontribs)

Adding a download link to a fan translation is normal, as is referencing a source that supports the claim being made (e.g. "retail only").

Piracy however is not allowed, so any links to where the game can be downloaded has no place here. If you are aware of any such links, please point them out specifically.

In regards to "abandonware" (which is in no way a legal term) the same rules applies as for piracy.

About the renaming of AM1 to WOW Entertainment

2
Yuuyatails (talkcontribs)

The name WOW Entertainment is no longer used ever since the department has been renamed to Sega WOW in 2003 (following the merger with Overworks and Global Entertainment R&D Dept. 2), to Sega AM1 in 2005 (after being re-integrated back into Sega) , to Sega R&D1 in 2011 and then to Sega Interactive R&D1 in 2015. it had became part of the Division 5 since 2015 and is currently under Sega Sammy Holdings' subsidiary Sega Fave Corporation (formerly known as Sega Toys Co., Ltd. until 2024) since 2024.

Plok (talkcontribs)

Then rename it, what's the issue? I merged two company pages that were assigned to the same entity.

About Saints Row Mods "going dark"

6
BorbingoBoy (talkcontribs)

A few hours ago, you made a couple of edits on Saints Row series games replacing URLs of Saints Row Mods forum with archived ones and removing links to the website. However, checking the site right now, it's up. No cache, no "CloudFlare Always Online", it's just online.

Is it safe to revert these?

Plok (talkcontribs)

It's still very much down. It alternates between a XenForo message showing the forum is no longer accessible and a proper 404.

BorbingoBoy (talkcontribs)

Are you absolutely sure it's not a DNS-related issue on your end, or something? I can access the website and log in as of writing this message.

BorbingoBoy (talkcontribs)

I stand corrected, it seems like the DNS I am using still has the record in cache. Wayback Machine cannot resolve the host. Their record appears to be absent for some reason, but the website itself is still operational.

Plok (talkcontribs)

That could actually be the case. Just went to check, and it seems that I'm not the only one with the problem, judging by the replies to this thread. I suppose the edits can be reverted.

BorbingoBoy (talkcontribs)

According to the staff, everything should be operational now. I also performed a manual dig on a different DNS and it seems to resolve correctly. Reverting in a moment.

Kim2091 (talkcontribs)

Hi! I saw your edit on the KOTOR page adding the 9.0b specification. Is there a way to utilize this API? I can't find any information regarding it. Thank you

Theclaw135 (talkcontribs)

If I may chime in, the release date confirms it's not 9.0c. KOTOR was a 2003 game.

Kim2091 (talkcontribs)

Guess we won't get a response

Plok (talkcontribs)

A response about what? It's DirectX, what do you even want to do with it?

Kim2091 (talkcontribs)

I wanted to know how to force it to run in DirectX mode, as I couldn't get it to run in DX mode at all. It always runs in OpenGL, and I can't find information elsewhere on how to force this.

Plok (talkcontribs)

Then say so instead of being quite vague :P

Just checked with CFF Explorer, it does indeed call OpenGL, and the only DX component it needs is DirectInput8. I'll correct the article now.

Postal 2 : Update 5100 inclusion

3
Poorpockets mcnewhold (talkcontribs)

I don’t think such detail is needed, as ALL versions now have the 5100 update. Steam obviously, but GoG & Zoom Platform version.

Plok (talkcontribs)

It is exclusive to digital releases, the retail version doesn't get a patch.

Poorpockets mcnewhold (talkcontribs)

In that case, that note should only be included to the retail release, instead of having to label the Steam,GoG and Zoom Platform version for consistency.

Nonstopmaximum (talkcontribs)

Hello, I'm not sure of the disc count being dubious as many pages with retail releases have it on the notes. I assumed it was there to help people avoid getting secondhand retail copies with a missing disc or so.

Ltpharry (talkcontribs)

Well, RCT isn't the only title that removed SafeDisc in later patches.

It turns out the Infogrames 2001 reissue of Risk II that I recently acquired is just a simple CD check title as well, with no SafeDisc anywhere. You may need to check to see if any reissues of Hasbro-era MicroProse titles utilize the DRM or not because I don't own many (And as I live in the UK, I wouldn't know if later re-releases in the States would use SafeDisc or not).

Plok (talkcontribs)

I sadly don't have a legit copy of Risk II so I can't verify that. For RCT1 in particular I managed to track down the original build I wanted as most copies one can find nowadays is pre-patched to 1.08.187

Ltpharry (talkcontribs)

So it's extremely early first-print copies of RCT1 that utilize the DRM then. I'm guessing the expansion packs (which would have utilized the patches) just have simple CD checks then.

Plok (talkcontribs)

Yup. SafeDisc files are completely absent from the expansions too, and the easily bypassable CD check is thankfully applicable because of it, I suppose.

Hey, minor remarks about Generals page edits

4
Mrtnptrs (talkcontribs)

Hey, awesome man that we are both the main maintainers of the CnC Generals page it seems haha. Just some minor remarks: don't forget to add (external) references to your fixes and to explain all your fixes carefully. No average user for example knows from their head how to check the Generals registry entries haha. I did this for now where I could. About if information should be hidden or not as it is incorporated into GenPatcher; I made it all visible standardly again. If you don't agree with it, feel free to discuss it here with me :) So we can avoid just undoing each other's work.

Plok (talkcontribs)

"No average user for example knows from their head how to check the Generals registry entries haha"

--> That's a non-argument. Have a look at the rest of the wiki, registry entries are placed normally and the in-built tooltip system explains what what is. This site is not meant to teach people computer basics.

Re: "hiding" --> it's just decluttering, the Essential Improvements section is already way too long.

Mrtnptrs (talkcontribs)

"That's a non-argument. Have a look at the rest of the wiki, registry entries are placed normally and the in-built tooltip system explains what what is. This site is not meant to teach people computer basics."

--> ? You were originally only saying something like "Check the serial registry entries". Without looking the information up on like EA Answers, people wouldn't even know WHICH registry-entries to look for. And no, we're not meant to learn people computer basics, but it is good practice to fully explain your solutions instead of just mentioning it shortly. It keeps it clear for all users, even the not-so experienced ones. This is standard here on this wiki right? Am I missing something here? Can you point me to one of the guideline-pages that supports your argument?

"it's just decluttering, the Essential Improvements section is already way too long."

--> Again, understand your intend, but the way you did it seems to be very uncommon for this wiki. I didn't see it done on any pages on this wiki so far. It is also never mentioned in the guidelines to my knowledge (feel free to correct me). So, I was not fully comfortable with it. One of my reasons is mainly: you were hiding the options using CSS integrated in the wiki-backend, which is ok. But hiding it makes people possibly miss it. If GenPatcher would ever get not supported anymore, it would be nice for people to be able to apply individual solutions themselves. Also, some people maybe like to apply solutions by hand to have more control over what happens instead of letting a program do the work. I would maybe propose to move the Gentool- and command-line parameter-parts to the bottom of the essential improvements list to make the first few stand out more? What would you think of that? Btw, I yesterday added clear notes to those parts that they are already included in GenPatcher.

Mrtnptrs (talkcontribs)

If btw we're getting in a stalemate, I can always ask the main PCGamingwiki-devs for possible ideas?

They were not differentiated before, they've always shared the page. I've actually started preparing to split 1C Company proper
