Well… Because it’s not wasteful at all. The point is to make it easier to read. As long as you’re not rough with it, all the pages should stay in, and then you can put both halves back on the shelf when you’re done (or just recycle it, since paper is one of the few things that’s actually recyclable). Nothing is being destroyed.

Windows 11@lemmy.world•Is Windows Defender still up to snuff?English
31·12 days agoYeah, Defender is good. I would also install an adblocker (uBlock Origin or uBlock Lite) if that family member is technologically competent enough for you to tell them “if a website ever doesn’t work, click here to turn this off”.
Malware Bytes free is never a bad idea, again only if you think this person can figure out how to manually run a full scan periodically. I always run a full scan with it if I’m trying to clear ad-ware off someone’s PC and I want a second opinion in addition to Defender.

191·13 days agoI mean… No? We had plagiarism checkers long before these AI checkers, and the latter very specifically advertises that it’s meant to detect if an LLM generated the text, not whether it’s original text. Completely different tools with different purposes.

Boycott US@lemmy.ca•'Take the Test, Risk Arrest': Why Some HIV-Positive Americans Are Still Forced to Register as Sex OffendersEnglish
8·13 days agoThe article says that, he-said-she-said aside, she was undetectable for HIV back when changes were pressed against her. Assuming that’s true, she wouldn’t have been able to spread HIV anyway.
But even if she was completely guilty, how does that make her a potential threat who must be kept away from kids? Seems very much like a case where the punishment doesn’t fit the crime.

Uplifting News@lemmy.world•Ozempic [Has Gone] Generic for Billions of PeopleEnglish
36·14 days agoYes, my understanding is that it’s legal in the US to purchase prescription-only drugs from overseas as long as they’re only for personal use. It’s kind of a grey area but as long as they’re not scheduled substances, I and multiple people I know have saved a lot of money by buying prescription drugs from Europe and shipping them here (we have such a wonderfully broken system here, don’t we?)

Green & indigenous News@news.abolish.capital•Scientists may be overestimating amounts of microplastics in the environment, and the culprit is lab glovesEnglish
5·16 days agoInteresting. My first thought was “duh, plastic gloves are going to contaminate the microplastic samples!” but that’s not what was going on. It’s the powder left on the gloves from manufacturing, which is not plastic, but happens to have similar readings to polyethylene when put through one of the main tests used to detect plastics.
The authors recommend that researchers testing for microplastics refrain from using gloves, or use special powder-free gloves if necessary.

3·18 days agoYeesh, it says they only discovered the other body on the day of the funeral, when they saw that the grave had already been filled by someone else. And that for some reason it took the company an entire week to just put her sister’s remains in another spot the family already had.

Buy European@feddit.uk•Thanks to EU consumer law, Nintendo is updating the Switch 2 design to enable European players to replace the batteryEnglish
120·20 days agoI find it hard to believe that it’s somehow cheaper for them to mass produce two different models of Switch 2 for different regions than to just bite the bullet and make battery replacements easier for everyone.
I mean, even Apple chose to give up the lightning port across all their phones after the EU required it, and they had a much bigger incentive to not change in other regions since they made a good deal of money via lightning adapter licensing/certification.
Hopefully this will eventually trickle over to international models, unless Nintendo decides to burn even more consumer good will than they already have.

Linux and Tech News@lemmy.linuxuserspace.show•Systemd Introduces Birth Date Support for Upcoming Linux Desktop Age ControlsEnglish
425·22 days agoLook, if an admin-editable “birthdate” field is the extent of the required OS-level age verification API, then whatever. I can just set it to Unix time 0 and not worry about it.
Parents can, in theory, just set up a user account for their kid with an appropriate age (birth year is plenty of granularity, just put 1/1 as the day) and get any “protections” websites want to implement.
I would prefer this over a face scan or drivers license photo any day, because ultimately it’s still 100% in control of the person who owns the hardware

4·28 days agoOnly certain planets (like ours) actually have a liquid core with a solid outer crust. Most rocky planets are like Mars, completely solid all the way through.
I believe what the other commenter was getting at is that, on large scales, the solids that make up planets behave like liquids do at smaller scales. Since if you zoom out, there’s not much different between a bunch of rocks loosely held together with gravity and a water droplet weakly held together by surface tension.

Autism@lemmy.world•Formal diagnosis pros and cons?English
11·30 days agoSomething not many people have mentioned… What country do you live in?
I was planning on trying to get diagnosed, but then RFK “Brainworm” Jr. announced his little “autism registry” plan. He went back on that, but it still has made me far more weary about being diagnosed as an adult. I have also heard, although this is purely conjecture and may be wrong, that having an autism diagnosis can make it harder to migrate to another country if shit hits the fan.
However, for your kid, I do think there are benefits that outweigh the downsides. I have also been diagnosed with ADHD since I was a teenager, and it allowed me to get academic accommodations in college that were pretty invaluable. I can imagine they would have had an even bigger impact as a kid in school.

Ask Electronics@discuss.tchncs.de•A bug in the system.English
4·1 month agoIt seems like the Imgur album only has a photo of the back of the board. I think HVS004 might be the wrong number, can you take a close up photo of the chip (and surrounding circuitry) with a flash for a clearer view?
It’s also weird that a bug could have fried itself across a chip that only runs off a few volts. “Bug zappers” usually use at least a few kV. Maybe that IC runs off the 33v line or it was a particularly wet bug, but I suspect that might not be your issue.

Neurodivergence@beehaw.org•No idea what to do with myselfEnglish
7·1 month agoI’m sure you’ll be able to figure it out! My best friend was in a very similar boat as you last year, had all the symptoms but their GP referred them to a crappy assessor who took the word of their parents over their own symptoms. They were told they “probably just have anxiety”. They were able to find an NP who diagnosed them, and now sees a psychiatrist regularly for med updates.
This was in the USA, which has the absolute most broken medical system in the world, so if they could figure it out I’m positive you can too :)

Neurodivergence@beehaw.org•No idea what to do with myselfEnglish
17·1 month agoThe whole idea of a “family informant” is so absolutely bogus and outdated. Why would YOU getting a diagnosis be dependent on what some other non-medical professional says? It’s an utterly broken system.
I don’t know what country you’re in, but try and find a nurse practitioner who specializes in ADHD. Use Google and other “find a doctor” search tools. They can diagnose you using a more updated criteria that DOESN’T involve your family.
It shouldn’t cause issues, since the water will remain in the heater without any pressure to push it out, there’s no difference between leaving it sitting with the valve open or closed.
Now, draining the tank could actually cause problems… But there’s not any reason for you to do that for what you’re trying to accomplish.

Not really. Android lacks a comprehensive full-system backup option like iOS has. It’s one of my biggest gripes about the OS. Best you can do is a cloud backup, which only saves certain apps’ data like games.
