The other day i was thinking how back then, in police/detective stories, the idea of “the perfect crime” was a repeated one, through convoluted machinations the criminal in question managed to fully avoid getting caught and paying for his crimes. Then as the years passed i realized all they needed was to be rich, they get away daily with crimes much more severe than any stuff that would put us in prison for life. Yet again i remember Benedict on The Last Action hero going “Because in this world, the bad guys can win!” and he was right all along…
Oh yeah, he will get away with it, he very much shouldn’t and i dearly wish he didn’t, but he will, unless the world changes extremely drastically in a hurry he will…

Entertainment@beehaw.org•Netflix can’t be allowed to buy Warner DiscoveryEnglish
5·4 months agoIt’s evil, yes, but it’s the lesser evil of the various companies that wanted to buy it, like Paramount/Skydance/Kushner or Comcast. Oh yeah, going for a lesser evil is still evil, but in evil times we have to do what we can with what we have, and Netflix would be the least bad option.

Basically they’re sticking GenAI as deeply as they can into every recess of the OS, to everybody’s protest, which is actually driving a push for people to move away from Windows, they’re doing the best advertising for Linux we’ve got in ages

3·5 months agoMUCH prefer AnySoftKeyboard as it has niceties like easy switching of language on the fly, arrow keys and other stuff like that, i just wish the autocomplete was not worse than not having any as it actually wastes your time showing you whatever incorrect and extremely unlikely suggestions it wants instead of something that actually follows what you’re writing

Privacy@lemmy.ml•The GrapheneOS developers are giving me concerns about the future of GrapheneOSEnglish
16·5 months agoBasically this. The project head might be a bit too paranoid, bellicose and problematic, but at this time a phone with GrapheneOS seems to be by far the safest way to have a smartphone, and the project head’s personality might be a part on this as their stated objective is to be able to resist state-level actors, you likely need someone who’s more than a bit “out there” to have the right mind for this

7·5 months agoAh fuck!
Edit: After reading more info on the situation it seems like there was no malice, but this has been handled in an outright lousy way, this software has important privileges on the phone and was handled spectacularly bad for an app aimed at people who care about privacy.
However, there was a silver lining here for some of us which was pointed there: The upgrade to version 2 was a potentially breaking one, so they published it in a way that would not upgrade automatically, so lots of people including me still have version 1.30.0.4, and are unable to automatically upgrade, need to do multiple manual steps to get to version 2. I think I’ll wait a bit before upgrading to see how they handle things, OR if there’s a fork by a person with a modicum of common sense.
