(Any investment in actual AI research is doomed for decades anyway when this bubble pops, but this would cause even more harm than the bubble has already caused.)

(Also any form of research is probably ruined for decades anyway due to LLM-induced brain rot and having to sift through all the slop to try to recover any remaining fragments of actually useable knowledge, but, again, let’s not make it even worse than it already is).

Unlike in the ones you posted, where the shitty message is obvious, I don’t know if the author intended the comic in the OP to have some shitty anti-LGBT message (though if he did he did a poor job of it, since I don’t see it); my interpretation of it is the one in my original comment (downvoted, I assume, by people with negative reading comprehension or idiots who think video games are actually harmful); as I said, when it comes to authors who turn out to be shitty people I think it’s better to ignore them and their intentions and appreciate the work for itself.

I think playing with the body and especially the mind (through eugenics, genetic engineering, or any other means) is as big of a nono in the Star Trek universe as fascism, due to trauma from the eugenic wars (you know, when Khan and his ilk fought baseline humanity).

You want that kind of thing try Iain M. Banks’ Culture series. Even more freedom to live your life however you want, the only limits to body modification are your imagination and some of the laws of physics (much less than in Start Trek, though), and people live to a healthy 300 or so, throw a party, and die in their own terms because they’re done, or curious. Or do not, no one is forcing them, they can keep on living if they want to.

Personally I think it’s the same ship or axe, and the same person, even if it’s not the same physical object anymore, because “my grandfather’s axe” means more than just this specific combination of head and handle, and has more to do with the history and sentimental value of the thing, and what it meant to my grandfather and what it means to me.,

And that while it’s obviously not the same water or even, if the river meanders and you wait long enough, the same river bed, a river is more of a geographic concept than a physical thing, so, yeah, it’s also the same river, inasmuch as a river is a thing.

Some authors are shitty people, but as long as I’m not supporting them I don’t see why I can’t enjoy their work by itself, and my own interpretation of it.

I don’t know what this Jago intended this comic to mean, and, frankly, I don’t give a flying fuck. To me it reads as a criticism of the media’s (and by extension its zombies) penchant for blaming video games (and before that role playing games, and before that rock and other pop music) for every evil in society, when there are much more evident but less convenient causes, and that’s how I choose to interpret it.

Not exactly written the same, but in Catalan a cold with nose congestion is called a constipat or costipat (similarly constipado in Spanish).

Analytics don’t need to be public. It’s often better for the analyst if they’re not. There are much better, much more detailed ways to gather analytics from your own game than achievements.

Achievements are very obviously not analytics. Not for the developers or publishers, at least, or for anyone whose livelihood depends on analysing how players play games. They’re incentives to drive player engagement. A way to further, uh, gamify the game.

You might be bored of killing goblins, but you’ve almost reached the achievement, just 132 goblins more. And then you’re almost up to some other achievement, so you keep playing a bit more.

And up goes the playtime.

Which is something analytics are very interested on (since it often contributes to discoverability), even if no achievement measures it.

If I recall correctly Return of the Obra Dinn has one for blaming the Captain for every single death (arguably true if we’re being argumentative, but I can’t give that bastard Nicholls a free pass), which admittedly takes some effort, as you still have to play the whole game (which is great on a first or even second time, not so much on an nth time just for the achievement).

There haven’t been any coups. No one has taken power by force (not since they genocided the native civilizations, at least). A vast majority of Americans have voted time and time again, for decades, for this shit, and will keep doing so if there are any elections after Taarump.

Egoism, racism, imperialism, murder, child abuse, and runaway untethered capitalism are core American values. Basic principles upon which their culture is built. Don’t compare them to actual victims. They reap what they sow.
