Europe@feddit.org•Renault to cut up to 20% of engineers as competition from China heats upEnglish
1·23 hours agoNo engineer enjoys enshittification. Imagine making a commission. That’s engineering. Now you make something beautiful and the guy you’re working for says that’s nice now change the font to comic sans and use more reductive cringe tropes, and change all the art to stick figures, and they’ll sell the good art at a premium.
Feels like shit but you need to get paid so you do what’s asked of you by the person that pays you.
That’s what being an “enshittification engineer” feels like. It’s the same team that made the good product being asked to make it worse or you’re fired.
We don’t need to close the loophole. We need to make it illegal for ANYONE to digitally stalk us and create digital data troves on us. They should be restricted to a narrow data gathering of what we give them for the purpose we give them the data for.
I don’t want corporations collecting and selling data that I don’t trust the government with.
A world where they still do that but the government “isn’t allowed to buy it” isn’t much better than what we have. Worse, it could enshrine their right to gather it.
I stopped crying at 8 (because I was told to man up) and I’ve cried probably a handful of times since then. I’ve been working pretty hard on it and the first time I sobbed as an adult was so freeing. I haven’t gotten it back since, and I still get stuck in the stone face mode most of the time. I got pretty close watching “no other land” which was a devastating watch.
As a guy there is also a lot of shame and fear around crying. Especially around women. I’m scared of having my partner get the ick and not feel like I’m manly enough to be attractive and dominant anymore. I’d have an easier time crying around men because even if they don’t think I’m very manly, that’s not a big part of my social personality. At work of course it would be completely devastating…
I’m trying to make sure my kids all feel comfortable crying regardless of gender. Of course there is only so much you can do against social norms.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's something that is more difficult than it seems?
4·1 day agoDoing something that looks like shit is the first step to doing something that looks sort of okay.
Things get better with experience and experience is just having a long list of failures to learn from.

Those loud uncultured Arabs simply don’t understand that in North America everyone is quiet during outdoor concerts, pausing only for a respectful golf clap between songs!
Yeah, most of what the FBI does is entrapment. They use the dumbest excuses to get away with it.
Truly the easiest job in the world, you invent crimes then arrest other people for them!

World News@lemmy.world•UK seeks to jail Palestine Action for 'terrorism' amid UK media blackoutEnglish
6·3 days agoThe UK already has laws that cover all the crimes you described. We don’t need to add a label of “terrorist” which takes every crime and scales the sentence an order of magnitude. Especially when it’s added secretly and the jury doesn’t even know what they’re finding them guilty of. Especially when they’re not even allowed to describe the reason for their actions to the jury.
This is a sham court!
Not to mention they could have set up the trap for ANY of his personas and it would have worked the same. Creating fake crime just to put people in jail.
If indeed… We should always give the state the benefit of the doubt when they’re obviously being extremely racist right guys?
It’s insane that he pretended to be terrorists of Islamist, feminist, white supremacist, and Zionist origins, but the only one any government cared about in any way was the Islamist terrorists persona. It’s also insane that he was convicted of being an Islamist terrorist when it’s clear that he wasn’t an Islamist because they knew about all the personas.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Montreal teacher challenges policy for trans students to hide identity from parents
3·4 days agoIt’s not a bunch of loudmouths, it’s enough loudmouths and enablers to enact discriminating legislation. Montreal is a wonderful city, I used to visit frequently and lived there for years, but it’s hard to call it tolerant when you’re banned from half the jobs for your religion. I can tell you even in professional work, in Montreal, the majority of my co-workers supported these types of laws such as the initial bill 21 and it’s a big part of why I left.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Woman who stole $70K in grandparent scam should get house arrest, lawyers argue
2·4 days agoI believe all the data we have shows that harsher punishments don’t effectively deter crimes, unfortunately. I’m just finding it hard to justify spending 116k/yr on someone who stole 70k when we can stop her from committing more crimes for far less
Sorry for not linking studies directly but the article has a better overview than any individual narrow study.
He’ll let you “research” culture, it’s just participating in culture he’s against!

Canada@lemmy.ca•Woman who stole $70K in grandparent scam should get house arrest, lawyers argue
5·4 days agoSo I get the desire to punish and get revenge, but each inmate costs us $319/day (2024). So jailing her would be spending 116k/yr on this degenerate, with no benefit to society.
We don’t need to lock her up for our safety, we just need to heavily monitor her actions and prohibit telecommunications, which is way cheaper. I hope she has a no telecommunications order for at least a couple decades so she can never pull this scam again.
I think once you factor in how much public money we spend on these losers it’s a lot easier to see the benefit of house arrest or other, cheaper punitive measures that create the same level of protection for the rest of us and our parents/grandparents.

228·4 days agoOf course it’s Quebec. You have no personal freedoms there. No freedom of religion, and now they’re attacking freedom of gender expression. Soon you’ll have to be a white Catholic Quebecois “de souche” or go to jail!
Only place more regressive is Alberta.

I agree that project based learning is great. Your initial description isn’t really a summary of perfect based learning though.
