For years now I have just Frozen the tomatoes and then defrosted them all at once but it was time to do canning. I’ve noticed zero changes in taste.
I’m in 7a. Rhode Island Massachusetts border.

Gardening@lemmy.world•Do you ever have a tomato plant that dies for seemingly no reason?English
5·2 years ago“Late blight” possibly.
This is not a criticism , but they seem crowded, we all work with the space we have. Also, have you planted tomatoes in that spot before? That can cause issues too.
Don’t over water, let them dry out a bit, remove the dying plants asap, use a copper fungicide, and next year replace a lot of the soil if you have to plant in the same spot. If you can, rotate your crops every year.
It wasn’t the cheapest, but the ones that sells for $200 or less only lasted me a season in the past.
Roma, beefsteak and cherry. Pretty simple this year, but I have 22 tomatoes plants this year, all started from seed.
Pretty much. It keeps everything larger than a chipmunk out. Sometimes, a chicken jumps in.

1·3 years agoMy internet where I live is through cable and it’s terrible. Bad. Outtages all of the time. Down for days at times. So I switched to starlink. It’s fine. Works great EXCEPT WHEN IT RAINS HEAVILY.
Heavy rain blocks the signal. Elon Musk owns it.
Now, I have a t-mobile hotspot. It’s only $50 per month as opposed to the $110 for Starlink.
If you have no other decent option, Starlink is amazing. If you have other options, don’t give Musk your money.

Gardening@lemmy.world•TIL about squash vine borers & had to perform surgery on my plantsEnglish
1·3 years agoI think a solution is to do crop rotation. By planting the squash in a totally different/ opposite location and also removing all traces of dead squash vines, the caterpillars won’t survive the winter and won’t be abundant enough to cause harm the next year.

World News@lemmy.ml•Journalist's death prompts Russian outrage over Ukraine's alleged use of cluster bombsEnglish
01·3 years agoReporters in Russia are propagandists. There is no press freedom in that country, so if you work as a reporter, you are not fulfilling the role of a journalist, but a state sanctioned propagandist.
A Russian reporter in Ukraine might as well be a part of the armed forces.
