Open Source Java Earth Sciences Software

Kalypso is an open source application for geospatial modelling and simulation. It is primarily developed to be a user friendly tool for GIS-based modelling and simulation of hydrological and hydraulic numerical models.

Niche Analyst (NicheA) was developed based on the BAM framework which allows users to create virtual spaces and virtual species, and to analyze ecological niches in both multivariate environmental and geographic spaces, linking views of the niche in the two spaces. The unique functionality in NicheA, not available in other software programs, is estimating Grinnellian niches of species based on environmental variables and occurrence records, but with a clear focus on fundamental ecological niches. NicheA can display ecological niches; calculate their shape, density, location, and other attributes; and quantify similarity among multiple niches.

Raman Data Search and Storage (RDSS) software was developed as an analytical tool for a fast and accurate identification of unknown minerals by comparison of their spectra with the indexed library of data. A search function was implemented to enable users to find a specific peak value. Using the asterisk character (*) as a placeholder for one or more unknown peak value(s), the software will return the best match(es). Besides the search utility by the Raman band positions, which was proven to be priceless in the interpretation of Raman spectra, the RDSS software gives the user the ability to display and inspect the Raman spectra quickly and very efficiently. Users can zoom into the Raman spectrum, shift in any direction the wavenumber and the intensity axes, and if any part of the spectral display is clicked, that region will be highlighted and the specific wavenumber returned. A photo for every sample entry stored in the database is also available.

GRad is a standalone solar radiation model, programmed in Java. It is capable of the calculation of potential (clear sky) and actual (real sky) irradiance and total irradiation for single and multiple geographical locations. Note that, while fully functional, this application is currently not developed any further.

CPSeis is the open-source version of ConocoPhillips' former seismic processing system. Uses Fortran 90 and C/C++ layers for I/O. The new system was designed using an MPI-parallel model and works well on Linux clusters or on individual workstations.

jdwglib is a Java library for accesing DWG files. It is essentially a port from the Pythoncad DWG reading classes by Art Haas. jdwglib manages complex DWG objects allowing users to employ these objects directly in their applications.

Autoplot is an interactive browser for data on the web. Give Autoplot a URL or local file name and it creates a sensible plot of the data. Autoplot allows you to interactively browse data stored in ascii, .cdf, netcdf, and many other formats. Autoplot's source has been moved to GitHub. Thanks to SourceForge for many years of hosting!

JAlma is Java Astronomical Almanac.

A free virtual petrographic microscope application which allows users to examine and explore minerals and rocks features. jVPM makes mineralogy to be easier to examine a thin section and to understand the characteristic properties for each mineral without a petrographic microscope, which is known to be very expensive. It is mainly addressed to students as a guide in individual or supervised laboratory work.

The NJ toolbox (njTBX) is a matlab object API, built on top of Unidata's Netcdf-Java API to facilitate netCDF model data manipulation. Development of njTBX is a part of 'An Open-Source Community Model for Coastal Sediment Transport' project.

XNavigator is the online viewer for the OpenStreetMap Globe at http://osm-3d.org and much more. It is an interactive 3D viewer and integrated client for exploring virtual city and landscape models. A wide range of interaction and navigation possibilities makes it easy to visualize and analyze very detailed virtual urban environments. XNavigator is the first application that supports the Web3DService (W3DS) service interface.

The linkFlow computer software program enables the user to perform civil hydraulic design tasks in a manner similar to a calculator. Vegetated and reinforced channels of any section can be designed using allowable shear and variable n values. c 2010

mesoFON is an individual-based mangrove forest model. It is a Java implementation of the KiWi model done with RePast Simphony. It contains several new features: (1) You can add up to 10 species via the GUI. However, in principle, the number of species to be included programmatically is unlimited. (2) You can use a variety of growth functions via typing them in as a string on the GUI. (3) The model is transparent, sinc it comes with the Eclipse workbench of RePast.

Java-based general aviation flight planning software

AndroidCam is an Android App which provides the ability to turn a mobile device into an intervalometer for collecting time-lapse images. Image capture can be triggered using time based scheduling or in response to data thresholds monitored by the app (e.g. temperature, location, windspeed, etc) Data collection is performed via IOIO connection and the new ADK. Remote synchronization upload of images can be scheduled and performed via SCP.

BioGeoTools is a Java based package that is aimed at providing a program and libraries for biogeorgaphy analyses.

CONMAP is a console program to aid in geobody connection analysis in geosciences. It accepts input and outpts results in GEO-EAS (GSLIB) format for easy interoperability with most geoscience softwares. To get help in usage, simply run the program without arguments. CONMAP is a Java 1.7 program. Open a command prompt, go to the directory where you download CONMAP.jar and enter the command "java -jar CONMAP.jar <arguments>" (without quotation marks) to run the program. Geobody detection itself runs pretty fast, with almost all execution time spent in file loading, parsing and saving.
