It’s a fun concept, so I’d love to read it if anyone has
You forgot the far future sci-fi version where they wake up on the planet XN-254b with no fucking clue about how they just achieved the trip in one night when it normally takes several years, even at superluminal speeds. And the random animal is a perfectly normal earth gerbil. The gerbil must be protected because everything on XN-254b wants to eat it, including the alien residents. Also, one of the guys appears to be pregnant and needs to get an alien abortion before getting back to Earth for his wedding.
(As a screenwriter, I’m tempted to actually do this. Not as fanfic, but as a real, marketable screenplay. “The Hangover, but in _________” comparison would probably play pretty well with film execs, and there’s not actually any major IP hurdles to being able to do this. You couldn’t call it ‘the hangover’ because that’ll be trademarked, but as long as you give it a different title, it should fly. You’re not using anything copyrightable here. Only real issue is that these knock-off versions will necessarily have significantly higher production costs. Period pieces or sci-fi pieces are always going to have more expensive and elaborate sets, props, and costumes. You could do it in increasingly remote, exotic contemporary locations, but then that also increases costs due to having to get the entire film crew to that exotic location.)
Also if you do this you could make it an AWESOME history lesson. Especially if you translate “hangover” into whatever common “get high” things were locally used, because not everyone drinks? But every society parties.
Do it do it do it PLEASE I will pay goddamn good money to see this.
Also please please please can we have someone trying to clean an alien stain off something and it reacts BADLY with common cleaning supplies and then with uncommon ones, and they think they are going to get in SO much trouble but it ends up being a sample of something valuable so they are forgiven
I think you should do it, I’d read or watch it
DoP/producer here, hit me up when you want to make this or another one of your ideas.
I would have gone for it if it was a different cast too. Loses its mystique when you’re already familiar with the characters and just continuing to watch them repeat their arcs
Nowhere does it say “use the same cast” in that, just “a group of friends”
If anything is more interesting when it’s the same basic scenario but completely different people each time
right, but that’s what the films did. if you only swapped the characters out they basically would be what the post is describing
“treat it like a genre”
I think you think I was arguing with the premise of this post and not saying how close the existing films are to the premise of this post.
sorry for intruding, peace be upon ye
Oh I totally misunderstood you then yeah, and aye, you’ve got a point
