U.S. sanctions to Russia forbid the use of Starlink. This includes crimea and the occupied territories. That’s why it wasn’t enabled.
To clarify on the Starlink issue: the Ukrainians THOUGHT coverage was enabled all the way to Crimea, but it was not. They asked Musk to enable it for their drone sub attack on the Russian fleet. Musk did not enable it, because he thought, probably correctly, that would cause a major war.
And before someone points out the ‘cause major war’ things, those are Walters words, not Elon’s. Musk said “It would make SpaceX explicitly complicit in a marjor act of war and conflict escalation” He later also added that had he been contacted by the US officials and asked to enable it he would, but they didn’t.

Average user needs their computer mainly as a device to run a web browser. Mac does that the most reliably. This seems objectively true to me.

I switched from a gaming PC, so it’s not about performance. The PC was objectively more powerful, but the user experience on Mac was simply better thanks to the OS.
Basically, the difference felt the same as me comparing my well-kept custom-built PC to a €300 supermarket PC full of junk and bloatware that I’d have to clean up at a relative’s place.
I just realized the other day that I’ve only replaced the wipers on my truck once - when I bought it six years ago - and never since. They’re still perfectly fine.
Probably has something to do with keeping it in a garage tent so it’s mostly protected from the sun and freezing. I bet ice is what destroys them the most - especially everything you do to de-ice them besides just melting it.
I have an almost 10-year-old MacBook Pro, and I gotta say - of all the tech I’ve ever owned, it’s hands down the most hassle-free experience I’ve ever had. It might not be for power users, but for shitposting and watching YouTube videos it’s been absolutely fantastic. It just works, and there’s virtually never any issues with anything.
The only negative things I have to say about it have more to do with its age than it being a Mac.
I’m very intrigued by the Framework laptop, but I dunno - I might just get another Mac instead. Especially now that they’ve brought back the card reader, HDMI, and a proper keyboard.

My unpopular opinion is that social media is simply inherently incompatible with human nature. I don’t think it’s anyone’s fault per se. It’s like heroin in the sense that it doesn’t matter how you distribute it - it’s going to cause harm because hijacking our reward systems is the reason we use it in the first place. If you modify it so all that goes away, then what you’re left with is water - and nobody wants that.
I don’t know what the solution is, though. I don’t think banning it is a solution, but I’m not sure how to square the harmfulness of it. It’s not just kids it’s bad for - it’s everyone. And yeah, there are degrees to it - perhaps Lemmy is objectively better than an algorithm-based message board like Reddit, but something being better doesn’t make it good. A non-toxic heroin that you can’t OD on is also better than the alternative, but it’s still going to be harmful. It’s an arbitrary line we collectively just decide to draw somewhere - even though you could argue infinitely about nudging it one way or the other.
