Afoxé Filhas de Gandhy Afoxé Filhas de Gandhy Salvador, Bahia Afoxé Filhas de Gandhy (Daughters of Gandhy) 46 years of existence and cultural celebration. The Afoxé Filhas de Gandhy Recreational and Cultural Society is a non-profit civil association. Afoxé Filhas de Gandhy was founded in 1979, by Gilberto Nonato do Sacramento (Negão de Donny) and a group of dancers Silvana Magda, Maria Jaeda Pinheiro, Raimunda Ildes de Oliveira, Adriana Santos, among other partners, at a time when Brazil was still under military dictatorship. Women's rights were severely restricted and Afro-Brazilian culture was often marginalized or suppressed. In their early years the group faced numerous obstacles. They struggled to find rehearsal space, secure funding and gain recognition. However, they persevered through their passion and commitment to their mission. We are proud to be the first female afoxé in Bahia, leading the way towards Afro-female empowerment and cultural celebration. Under the leadership of Gliceria Vasconcelos since 1984 and with the participation of other influential women, the organization has become a symbol of female empowerment. EIn 45 years, Afoxé Filhas de Gandhy has obtained recognition for their work from several social and Carnival organizations nationally and internationally. Some awards included the Castro Alves Trophy in the category of best afro group for three consecutive years (2013 - 2016), and for participation in Expo Brasil and Lavagem da Rua 46 in New York (2014). Today Filhas de Gandhy is also a reputable Cultural foundation that receives support from the Government of Bahia through Secult.
