I remember when the internet was new, I’d make friends with random people I’d “meet”. Like, I’d play Diablo with some rando on battle.net and then we’d stay in touch. Now it seems more ephemeral. Maybe it’s just because I’m older.
As a young teen, I arranged irl meets with people from band guestbooks and friends-of-friends-of-friends from MSN pretty frequently.
Dumb, looking back, but all turned out to be who they said they were and good times were had. Would be super concerned if my kid did the same and he’s literally an adult now, so idk.
I met my best friends over the internet in my late 20s during the pandemic. But it was a d&d lfg group and we’re just the ones who actually played. I actually spend a month living with one of them when I moved out west last year
I had a really good DND group during the pandemic. Probably the best game I ever ran. But it was online, and when the pandemic called down they all just drifted away. Very sad about it, honestly.
My first internet experience was ‘96ish. My buddy’s dad was an HP engineer and had the stuff before a lot of people did. My buddy’s dad logged on, went into a chatroom, and the first thing I ever saw was a sex roleplay of Peter Pan and Wendy and some incest porn. Since then, nothing on the World Wide Web has surprised me. Been a few things I could have gone without seeing though 😕
One of my best friends I met in a DRG lobby. We don’t really even play DRG anymore, we do talk almost every day, sometimes they call and talk with me while I fall asleep (wildly different time zones). Don’t even know their name lol
I can’t remember where j first heard it but internet friends are weird, like i know some of mine deepest darkest secrets, yet i don’t even know if really has legs
