As global tensions rise and conflict escalates, Australia is being drawn deeper into US military strategy through AUKUS and broader military integration. That means more risk, more secrecy, and a greater chance that nuclear-capable bombers, warships and submarines could operate from, through, or alongside Australian territory.

The United States refuses to confirm or deny whether its vessels and aircraft carry nuclear weapons. Australia accepts that policy. Australians may never know if nuclear weapons are being brought into our country.

This is unacceptable.

If nuclear weapons are brought into Australia, ordinary people would carry the risk while decisions are made behind closed doors. And if Australia is seen as part of a US nuclear war machine, that makes us a target too.

So, we got a 2-week reprieve from the war (I’m not so sure this will be honoured) but we seem to be inching ever closer to nukes being detonated. We must not let our country become a target or be part of the war machine that could detonate nukes on any civilian population.

The US has a “neither confirm nor deny” policy on whether visiting submarines, ships, or planes carry nuclear weapons. In late 2025, Senate estimates heard there was “no impediment” to visits by dual-capable platforms and that Australia would continue to respect that US policy. That means Australians may never know whether nuclear weapons are being brought here.

Labor first committed to signing and ratifying the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in 2018, reaffirmed that commitment in 2021 and 2023, but Australia still has not signed. Recent US and Israeli attacks on Iran, condemned by UN experts as unlawful and in violation of the UN Charter, show how quickly conflict can escalate and how easily closely aligned states can be exposed to the consequences without democratic say.

We have large deposits in this country but exports are Australia’s sole legal use for uranium. Nuclear power s banned in this country.

I’m of the opposite opinion, it’s pretty clear nuclear weapons are the only thing that stops a country from getting invaded by a much much larger country (or a regional pacific player ((I don’t want to upset anyone in the room))

Absolutely. At some point maintaining nukes will be the cheapest and safest option to ensure our sovreignty.

Unfortunately Ukraine opened my eyes to a very painful truth. The protection of nuclear powers is worth nothing (including the US nuclear umbrella) and having your own nukes is everything.

If you don’t have an independent capability the nuclear powers destroy your countries youth, heritage and future in endless proxy wars. I don’t ever want that for my kids. I don’t want nukes either but having our own nukes is a lesser evil.

I don’t think so. Israel has nukes but they are being bombarded by Iran, and Hezbollah from Lebanon and by the Houthis from Yemen. Mind you, Israel is pretty hush-hush about their nukes but everyone knows they’ve got them

I know E_S. What I mean by my post is that even though Israel has nukes, it didn’t scare off its attackers. Having nukes is not an automatic protection. There are many factors to consider.

Two nuclear countries (or under nuclear umbrella) have a lesser probability of direct conflict.

Ukraine is also attacking Russia in a similar immediate succession of recent events.

The main “funny” development here is the USA’s changing role on the geopolitical global stage - that if Australia has its own nukes there is a lesser chance of Australia getting invaded by USA.

(And tbf - not only having nukes isn’t an foolproof “automatic” protection, it’s just bad for humanity that we act like this & have nukes, divided in competing tribes just like so many species before us competing for the food scraps in local area for survival.)
