Metro Exodus
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Continuation of writer Dmitry Glukhovsky’s legendry metro series of books and game’s storyline brings in Metro Exodus. Taking place after the events of Metro Last Light.
Metro Exodus introduces a continuation of the Metro Storyline, this time the story-arc focuses on our main protagonist Artyom and his wife Anna’s story. How they and their merry band of Spartans escape the Metro to find the Russian military leadership in hiding.
Many wondered about the game going semi-open world, from its story-driven linear past. And to those you have nothing to worry about the game still retains its pasted glory with all of the bells and whistles that we loved but with some more added flair to the mix.
Plot:
Artyom’s relentless opposition to find life outside of Moscow was at its peak. When Artyom and Anna were accidentally caught by unknown soldiers of an unknown faction, whiles trying to pursue a train. Something the life in Metro long forgot.
While trying to resist, the unknown soldiers shot Artyom and took Anna as capture. They thought they took care of Artyom for good, or so did they think.
Barely surviving Artyom locates the train station, where they took Anna. Upon entering, he was greeted by an old train conductor/mechanic. Who helped him reach Anna, only ran into the hidden secret of Moscow.
Jammers, Russian Military leadership was blocking all communications, to keep the city isolated. With the help of the Mechanic, Artyom managed to rescue Anna and steal a train engine.
Upon Millar and his Spartan's dramatic entry in the confusion, Millar acknowledged that he knew about this Jamming protocol and know He cannot go back to Moscow along with Anna and Artyom. Millar’s only choice now is to seek out the Russian military command.
The journey will be dangerous and full of unknowns, they don’t know what awaits them outside of Moscow but the daring Spartans tagged along with Millar, Anna, and Artyom to seek out the answers.
This was Artyom’s dream all along, to find life outside the Metros, to seek out land without radiation and gas masks. Now is the chance, to fulfill his dream of finding a nice place to rebuild.
Gameplay:
The game goes through a great transition from the dark creepy metro tunnels from the previous games with a great open-world aspect. As soon as I reach the open-world part of the game, it immediately hit oh! ♥♥♥♥, this is a pure tip of the hat to games like the STALKER series of games.
From how the game missions progressed to the open world feel, I was getting pure nostalgia kicks from STALKER.
Moving right past that, I loved how Metro Exodus set up all its missions and movement throughout its world. Every long journey made sense and every detour, even the ones that I took on my own made sense in the grand scheme.
Apart from the obvious downside of the wastelands feels empty even compared to its previous titles.
But the human element was strong each faction you encounter, made an impact on the story with their own motives. Killing them was so much fun and at times challenging.
Like the previous games, our main protagonist starts off with his own motivations and desires but has no clue how to go about them. As the game progresses and events occur Artyom slowly puzzles things to gather into the whole story.
Weapons & Gunsmith:
Metro series of games have always pushed great gunplay with a good amount of quality weapon models that played out perfectly with the theme.
This time around Metro Exodus is one-upping its gun game with more and better-looking gun models, effects, and most importantly the gunsmith system.
Gunsmith turned out to be an almost perfect all-rounder modular gun upgrade system with its easy interface, smart choices, and great-looking functional upgrades.
I see some mention their feeling about few upgrades modules, which is fair enough but I personally love the amount of modules available in-game.
And most important how we can access all of them, by simply killing the enemies. All the upgrade modules you need are already in place with enemies around the world, you just need to kill them and loot their weapon modules.
World design:
From the toxic hellhole Moscow to lifeless dried-out desert areas Metro Exodus has it all. A healthy variety of different areas with different flavors and outlooks.
Everything looks beautifully detailed and crafted. Sadly once you leave one zone area you won’t be able to go back without finishing the game. I really missed the dessert area once I left it, it felt very short-lived.
Music and Sound effects: No complaints here, there are about 31 unique and amazing sounding tunes in place. All of them sound amazing and befitting to the theme.
The same goes for sound effects, just amazing work from the silent dark nights to chaotic bullet storm firefights, the creators did a great job.
Voice over and dialogues:
I wish I could’ve shown the same level of enthusiasm and be complementary about this section, but I just cannot.
Although there is nothing seriously wrong or game-breaking going on but I can’t look past some weird dialogue choices. Some just don’t fit the scene and some are just poorly toned or performed.
The same goes for the voice acting as well, with the obvious poor attempt of Russian ascent. Nothing that serious just finicky at times.
Positives:
+ Great Continuation of the Metro Story-arc
+ Super fun gameplay
+ Gunsmith system
+ Atmospheric
+ Decent attempt at an open world setting
+ Great character progression
+ Immersive and stunning world design
+ Strong gunplay characteristics
Negatives:
- The Open world setting cuts down on the chaotic nature of the game
- Open sandbox areas are a bit sparse
- Artyom only speaks out during the load screen and not in-game as always
- Stealth doesn’t work out well
- Finicky dialogues
- Poor attempt at Russian ascent as expected
