WHALE ROADS
A downloadable chronicle
A mega-zine dedicated to a West Marches grand campaign of Wolves Upon the Coast by Luke Gearing.
Thirty players. Three Referees. A year-long voyage across the whale roads, seeking glory, power, and a place to call home.
WHALE ROADS chronicles the journey of the wandering flotilla, following their victories, challenges, and defeats across the Northern Isles.
WHALE ROADS is and will always be a free download. Please enjoy, and remember the flotilla.
Note! WHALE ROADS contains spoilers for the Wolves Upon the Coast Grand Campaign, Monsters&, and &&&&&Treasure. If you anticipate playing in a campaign yourself, consider yourself warned.
Contents
WHALE ROADS includes:
- A roster of the Wolves of our flotilla
- A session-by-session breakdown of our campaign: what strange things we discovered, who boasted, who triumphed, and who died
- Original fiction from the players
- Commentary from editors and Referees
- House rules created for our campaign
- Art (and some jokes) from players and commissioned artists
You can also download the map of the world we discovered: Generated from notes taken by players as we explored the campaign hexgrid, and rendered by Annie Johnston-Glick in the fashion of cartographers illustrating based on rumor and legend.
Thanks to Ranged Touch!
This game wouldn’t have happened at all if we, the players and referees, had not been members of the community surrounding Ranged Touch, dedicated to critical deep dives on different media. Thanks to the hosts and the mods for making it a thoughtful corner of the internet.
There's a free episode of the Ranged Touch monthly podcast on where Cameron Kunzelman interviews our game's three Referees about the game! Give it a listen if you want to hear more about how the game was run.

interesting text
This was a phenomenal read and an excellent account of play. Mad props to everyone who participated.
One of the coolest things I've read in a long, long time <3
Love this. Would totally purchase it as a book.
Having an artifact after play is over is such a treasure to have in one's life.
Wow! This is fantastic. I am so impressed. I do not know what to praise the most. The fact that you guys actually played this amazing campaign, or the fact that you documented it all so lovingly and beautifully. Well done! I will read about your heroic saga and praise your names! Cheers!
i'm pogging out of my fucking mind
