Track swims with your Fitbit device and Pixel Watch

Expand all Collapse all

Swim with your Fitbit device

Use any of the 4 most common strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly.

To help monitor your progress, you can track your swim duration, laps and pool lengths completed with your Fitbit device. Remember to enter your pool length before you start your workout for accurate distance measurement. For instructions, go to Set the pool length.

Most Fitbit devices are water-resistant up to 50 meters. For more information, go to Can I swim or shower with my Fitbit device?

Tips:

  • A swim workout counts toward your active minutes and calories burned goals. You don’t earn steps for swimming.
  • Heart-rate tracking is enabled during your swim workout with your Google Pixel Watch 2, 3, and 4 only.
Track swims using Fitbit options

Based on your device, choose to track your swims automatically, or use the Exercise app to start and stop your swim workout. After your workout, check additional stats in the Exercise tile of the Google Health app .

For automatic tracking, sync your device with the Google Health app to find your stats in your exercise days from the Today tab .

To set your pool length, check the instructions in Set the pool length.

Improve your swimming with your Fitbit device

Even if you’re a novice swimmer, your Fitbit device can record your swims. This means that you can swim about 6 to 12 laps of the pool without stops or pausing to rest.

If you’re unable to swim this distance, you may notice inconsistencies in your swim data. As your swimming ability and strokes improve, the accuracy of your data improves as well. For more information, go to Check inconsistencies in your swim data.

Check inconsistencies in your swim data

Inconsistencies in your swim data may be caused by any of the following:

  • You completed only a few laps.
  • You stopped to rest multiple times or in the middle of the pool.
  • You stopped to rest for longer than 60 seconds after you completed a pool length.
  • You changed your stroke type midway through a lap.
  • You swam with a kickboard or without using your arms.
  • You swam less than the minimum duration needed for your swim to be automatically recognized.
  • The watch is not secured tightly to your wrist.
  • The water is too cold or the currents are too strong.
  • The watch detects that the swimming strokes are irregular.

Swim with your Google Pixel Watch 2, 3 & 4

Automatically track your swim duration and pool lengths completed with your Google Pixel Watch. Your watch can provide real-time information while you swim.

These are:

  • Live lap count (pool lengths)
    • Note that 1 lap count is equivalent to 1 pool length.
  • Live calories
  • Live distance in meters (m) or yards (yd)
  • Heart-rate

After your swim, your device also generates a swim summary with information about:

  • Cardio load
  • Average heart-rate
  • Heart-rate zones
  • Lap count
  • Duration

Tip: For the most accurate swim data, wear your watch snugly. Note that inconsistencies can also be caused by factors like cold water, strong currents, or irregular swimming strokes. For more information, refer to How do I track heart rate with my Fitbit device?

If applicable, enter your pool length to ensure an accurate distance calculation. You can choose what kind of swim you want to track on your Google Pixel Watch 2, 3, and 4:

Important: Swim Open only tracks duration and heart rate.

  • Swim Pool: You can use this if you plan to swim in pools and track metrics such as laps, distance, calories, and heart rate.
  • Swim Open: You can now choose this for all other swims on open areas like lakes, beaches, oceans. This can also work for when you are in a pool and not swimming laps.
Set a goal before you start your swim workout

You can set goals before you start a swim. These can help you hit targets and measure your progress at the same time. There are 4 goals:

  • Lap count
  • Time
  • Distance
  • Calories

To set goals:

  1. Open the Exercise app .
  2. Tap Swim and then Goals .
  3. Turn on Goal mode.
  4. Set your Laps, Time, Distance, or Calories goal.

Use Gemini to help track and control your workouts on your Google Pixel Watch. For more information, refer to Gemini on Google Pixel Watch.

Check your post workout summary

You can review your workout performance summary after a swim on your Google Pixel Watch or in the Google Health app. This summary provides a breakdown of key metrics that you can tap or filter to explore in more detail. These metrics include:

  • Cardio load
  • General stats, such as duration, heart rate, and calories burned
  • Heart rate details and time spent in each heart rate zone

To check a summary from the Google Health app on your phone:

From the Today tab under Activity, tap the swim you want to check.

Water resistance and dust resistance are not permanent conditions, and will diminish or be lost over time due to normal wear and tear, device repair, disassembly or damage. Google Pixel Watch is not drop/impact proof and dropping your device may result in loss of water and dust resistance. Damage from drops, impacts, and other external forces are not covered under warranty. Google Pixel Watch is designed to be used in shallow water and should not be used for activities involving water at high velocity or high temperature. Some Google Pixel Watch bands are not water-resistant. Check g.co/pixelwatch/water for details.
