I’m not a gambling person at all but I do like the mix of betting inconsequential amounts on a poker game and just doing a game night with a few friends. We’ll do poker night occasionally where we all put in $20 CAD and while most of the fun comes from having some pints and chatting, the idea of maybe ending with an extra $80 or whatever in beer change makes it a little more exciting even if i usually expect to lose it.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•New EU age verification app hack speedrun record
23·22 hours agoI really can’t remember an era where the term hack wasn’t used incorrectly but this case seems a lot more fitting than usual
I’d vote for that rule example you gave be added to the sidebar exactly as you wrote it
I think there’s a perfect middleground between banning reposting existing topics and no moderation. You don’t want to create a StackOverflow situation where people can’t ask a question because someone asked a similar one 15 years ago

Fuck AI@lemmy.world•Soon, we will all be called "boomers" because we use internet search and not slopbots
10·2 days agoAlso I’m curious how many folks on this instance are even under 35
Just about 29 here! Overall I’d say I hate AI as does everyone around me my age that I know. I do think current iterations of LLMs, specifically for programming cases, are useful but only when restricted to an advisor role rather than writing any code itself.
If you ask an LLM about how to use a certain library or module and you go and fact check its’ answer then its not really any different than général internet research IMO.
Ignoring programming though:
Fuck any type of AI creative media or work. It’s so god damn dystopian to offshore human creativity to fucking computers
It’s by no means Linux but I actually do find MacOS quite customisable, especially if you spend a lot of time in the command line. It’s going in the opposite direction in the last couple years of course but you could straight up run the i3 TWM in XQuartz on MacOS if you wanted to
What customisations do you find MacOS lacks?

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How do I actually find a job that isn't retail?
1·2 days agoThis is kind of the most useful part of secondary education too. I’m very introverted but by chance I ended hanging out with a group of very extroverted talented guys who got me in at 3/4 of the companies I’ve worked for in my professional career
My experience is very late 2010s and early pandemic era tech industry focused though. I’m unemployed right now but not even my connections are able to get me on anywhere since nobody’s hiring it seems :(
The Wikipedia page for it is a great read: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaver-engineered_dam_in_the_Czech_Republic
A family of beavers constructed a series of dams that accomplished environmental goals set by the Czech government, which had delayed its proposed project since 2018 for bureaucratic and financial reasons. The beaver-built dams saved the Czech government approximately US$1.2 million, providing ecological benefits including improved water quality, enhanced biodiversity, and better water retention
I remember our hydro company in my small Ontario, Canada town sending out free LED bulbs to people if they made under a certain amount. We were able to replace nearly all the lights in our house

I remember when people would argue and get mad at the generic use of the word meme for funny internet picture.
I miss a lot of things but I don’t miss the image macro pedantry
Did… Did he actually say that?
What country? You totally can in Canada, especially if you cause a crash
IIRC the US heavily pressured other countries with tariffs to also ban it
