It sure would be nice if the posts were the links directly to the artists own site, not rehosted elsewhere, that way the clicks might benefit them. It happens from time to time, but doesn’t seem to be commonplace. Hopefully when the mod returns, some changes will help shape this community for the better.

To be sure, that’s a decent way to do it. If indie.io had something similar, that might be nice.

Though given it’s all indie games over there, I’d be on board to pay this 6.99 not as a subscription, but as a fee to get a week to try out whatever I’d like for some reasonable amount of time, maybe set by the developer. Then of the games I’ve tried but not purchased the full version of, split the 6.99 between them.

It’s not really occurred to me before that people make alts to manipulate votes here. I never saw karma as relevant even back on Reddit. I have some other accounts but mainly for when lemmy.world stops working. Seems quite narcissistic to spite vote with alts.

I agree, it’s unrealistic any user would dish out three times more downvotes than upvotes. All on posts too, none on comments? Certainly an alt, your instincts are surely correct.

This must be a holdover from Reddit? Last week I was having a conversation when the user suddenly pointed out they’d accumulated upvotes where I hadn’t and therefore was correct. I was the one upvoting their comments for contributing to the discussion.

When I pointed this out, they downvoted my comments haha.

You figured correctly. In fact I just looked and while I had seen the ‘motion’ post, I just gave it a vote and went on my merry way. Didn’t notice there was an upheaval going on.

I skimmed through a fair amount of the offender’s comments, and I could sort of see someone making a mistake and lashing out in refusal to admit they messed up, but as you say, the doubling down makes it seem they actually believe it.

The community mod sure is in for a surprise when they return. Hopefully it gets sorted out quickly.

What’s the temperature on posts that didn’t have the citation wherever the poster found it? Would the etiquette here be to link to that reddit post, or simply not post any content that lacks artist attribution?

I’m thinking specifically the other day something was posted where the only source another user could find was it’s previous reddit post with the citation already cropped out. I checked myself and had the same result.

Eventually the IRS would garnish a person’s wages, yes? For someone self employed, that wouldn’t exactly be a viable option I suppose. They could put a hold on someone’s bank accounts and whatnot if garnishment isn’t possible.

You’d need to transition to a cash based lifestyle to circumvent this. Difficult to do in today’s world.

I could see this as useful to get for a month so you can try out a bunch of indie titles to find ones you like before you buy them. Could be helpful for developers that don’t have small demos or anything.

I see what you’re getting at, but we have differing views as to what constitutes ‘evil’. Cyanide isn’t evil because it can kill a person, just as an oven isn’t evil when it burns the roast dinner.

Without possession of a level of consciousness akin to ours, good and evil aren’t really possible. An inanimate object can’t make a decision to produce a negative outcome - nor a positive one for that matter. They can only be used by us to bring about an outcome. LLM’s have been built to be ingratiating and as a result they are addictive to an extent for those that use them.

ChatGPT’s fundamental design was crafted by humans, under instruction by humans, under leadership by Musk and Altman. They carry a good part of the responsibility and blame for that kid’s death. The machine was only doing what it was created for - just as the rope was.

The word ‘fault’ is commonly used interchangeably with ‘responsible’. Following your described definition, I agree that LLM’s are faulty, and they can be at ‘fault’.

I invoked the ethical dilemma as it’s almost universally understood that it’s a scenario forcing an individual to make a decision. I’ve never before heard someone blame the trolley. The brakes are broken? Come now, if we’re going to be so semantic about it, a human should have regularly inspected the brakes and subsequently had them repaired.

Machines are capable of what their design parameters allow or can be manipulated by a user to a accomplish. In the trolley problem, any outcome is not the fault of the trolley itself.

Funny as the mosquito example is, they aren’t evil. Just as wolves aren’t evil for hunting deer. Animals may not possess consciousness as you or I, they are alive and are driven by biological necessity. Machines on the other hand, aren’t.

Interesting perspective. I’m on board with blaming the creators, but I’m leaning away from blaming ChatGPT itself as it is just a machine.

A machine used incorrectly, to be sure, and we’d be better off without it certainly, but the machine carries no fault its existence. It isn’t conscious after all, it’s akin to a T85 inside a vending machine.

This makes me wonder if the legal definition of ‘custody’ in Japan is similar to what might be referred to as ‘primary custodian’ in other places. I’m assuming that children of divorced parents still spend time with both.

If that’s not the case, now that the family court is reviewing these old arrangements, I wonder what the impact would be of shared custody for a child that hasn’t had any interaction with one of its parents for several years.
